Work Text:
The blazing heat of the sun reached every piece of Geto's skin that was uncovered. It should have been uncomfortable, but the past few weeks had been all gray skies and windy nights, so Geto didn't seem to mind.
"Yo! What was up with you back there?" Gojo Satoru said as he walked up to Geto with his hands in his pockets. A couple passing by curiously peered over at him but continued walking.
"I didn't think there was anything wrong with me today." Geto took one last sip from his soda can before shooting and landing it in a trash can. He tried to look up at Gojo, but immediately closed his eyes when they landed on the sun.
"How about nearly getting yourself killed?" When he spoke, Gojo had taken a couple steps forward and was now helpfully shading Geto's eyes.
"I didn't get killed though, right? Just forget about it and let's head back. Yaga said we're free the day after, so you wanna invite Shoko and go somewhere?" Geto opened his eyes, and Gojo was right there in his face. He was so close that Geto could smell Gojo's expensive cologne. It smelled just like strawberries.
"Just 'cause you're alive doesn't mean I'll just forget what happened. You almost died, but now you're here asking to go hang out with Shoko? Unbelievable." Even though the sunglasses were covering most of his facial features, Geto could still make out Gojo's disgusted face.
"But I'm not dead, am I? You're still talking to me, so there's no reason to get worked up over it." Geto turned his head to watch a pack of seagulls on the ground fighting each other for a bag of chips. "And besides, shit like this happens all the time, but it's our job. So deal with it because there's no one to deal with it for us." He paused for a moment before daring to try and lighten the mood.
"Damn we work full time in high school don't we?" He smiled and looked back over to Gojo, but the other boy clearly wasn't having it.
"God why don't you understand what I'm trying to say! Stop trying to downplay it just because you survived. You could have been a puddle of blood on the floor but instead of acknowledging that, you're trying to pretend nothing happened!" With an exasperated sigh, Gojo turned on his heel and walked away from Geto, fists clenched in his pockets. He would have liked to say a thousand more words on how there would be a gaping black hole in his life if Geto ever left, but he wasn't feeling up to it.
At a loss for anything to do, Geto watched Gojo's silhouette slowly disappear into the crowd of people crossing the street. He sat back down on the bench and just listened to the cars passing far away and the chatter of children playing around in the park. He closed his eyes and started recalling the argument. He stayed like that for a while. When he was done mulling over every decision that could have led to this argument, he let out a weary sigh and opened his phone.
It was 7:38 p.m., and he had a new notification from Yaga. He read it, and it said something along the lines of Yaga informing him of a new mission, and asking him to let Gojo also know. His eyebrows narrowed in frustration. Tell Gojo, my ass, Why can't you say it. After harboring more resentment towards Gojo (and some towards Yaga), Geto flipped through his contacts and called Shoko.
The line rang for three beeps before she answered.
"Yo is that you Suguru?" She sounded like she had just woken up.
"Yeah it's me, do you know where Satoru ran off to?" Geto let his eyes lazily wander across the park, the streetlights illuminated barely anything, leaving him in almost darkness.
"You guys having another fight?" She let out a sigh that sounded almost robotic due to the shitty reception. "Sorry, but you just woke me up and I haven't seen him since you left for your mission."
"Ah no worries, just let me know if you find him, Thanks." Geto could hear Shoko yawning in the background.
"Alright catch you later." And with that Shoko hung up.
Left with the silence of passing cars, and the children in the background, Geto stood up. He thought about it for a second and then decided that he probably already knew where Gojo was going. There was a forest south of jujutsu high that contained a forgotten cabin. Geto and Gojo had discovered it while hunting for a special grade, and had since turned it into a hang out spot. Even Shoko had visited it a couple of times when there was nothing else to do.
Geto stretched a little bit and then he started walking.
A little over an hour later and the sun had completely set. Geto briefly checked the time; it was 8:47. A small breeze picked up and the leaves of the trees around him began to move. Geto loved this—when it was only him and Gojo alone with the rustle of leaves. No one to tell him that he wasn't good enough, no one to try and pry away at their friendship, and no one to disturb the peace that was this forest—But he couldn't love It now, because Gojo wasn't by his side. Instead he was probably holed up inside the cabin, letting his thoughts eat him from the inside out like he frequently did.
Geto let all the thoughts and feelings swivel around his head before he began walking again through the densely packed trees, and into the heart of the forest. As he walked, the forest bloomed around him. Geto felt small drops of rain fall on his face, but he simply kept hiking. He hadn't been back here in a long time—frankly just because he hadn't had the time with missions taking it all up. But oh, how he missed it. With alluring flowers at every turn, and the chirping of crickets and the buzzing of fireflies. Although it looked like it was untouched, it was alive.
A couple more minutes passed of Geto walking through the forest, By now he was completely soaked due to the rain, but he passed a tree and then he found it; inside a clearing rested an old cabin, forgotten and left to the earth. It had moss and vines growing along the roof, and parts of its wooden deck were broken, but it stood tall. Illuminated only by the light of the full moon resting above. The rain began to pick up again and forced him into action. Geto emerged from the edge of the clearing and began walking toward the cabin.
~
As soon as he gave the door a little push, it fell open and gave him access to the dimly lit hallway. He stepped inside and shut the door as softly as he could behind him. Looking around, He saw that there was already a pair of shoes carelessly removed on the floor next to him.
"Satoru?" He asked, and to which no one answered.
He gingerly removed his own wet shoes and neatly put them next to the others. Geto silently walked down the hallway and into the kitchen/living room. there was nothing out of place aside from dark shades carelessly discarded onto the middle counter. He picked up the glasses, and making great care not to leave fingerprints or water on the glass, folded the temples back down.
He dropped off his wallet, his phone, and the key for his dorm at jujutsu high onto the place where the glasses had rested just moments earlier, and then walked over to the living room. His body was cold from the rain, but his mind was only set on finding Gojo.
As he had expected, on the couch lay Gojo Satoru, his lean figure plastered over it in such a manner that it looked like it hurt. One of his arms was hanging off of the couch, catching moonlight. Geto stepped over to where he was sleeping, being careful to not make a sound. He sat down on the floor next to him, his wet clothes clinging to him uncomfortably. He let his back rest on the base of the couch and then he turned his head just slightly to admire look at Gojo.
Geto suddenly let out a small cough that caught him off guard. He stilled and waited to see if he had woken Gojo, but Gojo merely shifted his head and then continued on sleeping. Geto looked closer and noticed that on his face were two trails of tears that had fallen onto the couch. He thought for a moment before feeling extreme remorse for the way he had put down whatever Gojo was trying to confront him about. He took in Gojo, and his almost glowing hair. His slightly pink lips parting ever-so-slightly made Geto want to reach out and touch the beauty of a boy in front of him.
And so he did, Geto rested his head onto Gojo's extended arm and he felt the warmth of his skin on his cheek, and the gentle, slow breathing behind him. He didn't want Gojo to wake up. He knew that if he did, he might decide to have another argument and then they'd go back to having so much distance between them. And oh, how Geto hated that distance.
They had been fighting a lot recently over every little thing and every small detail. Geto didn't want to argue or yell of fight back, but all the stress from having more and more missions to deal with because of some puny humans and their emotions was too much to keep buried inside him. Arguing even for a second, and getting something to lose his head over was a lot more relaxing than Geto would like to admit.
Geto slowly closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
GOJO
When Gojo woke up, for a split second he had no clue where he was or what time it was or what day of the week it was. All Gojo could focus on was Geto. The one who he had had countless arguments with over the course of the week, that same Geto who was now nuzzled up next to his hand. Gojo almost yanked away his hand in fear of this somehow being his fault.
He watched Geto for a while, and then he began to relax and let himself slump back into the couch when he realized the boy was sleeping. Without putting a single thought to it, Gojo moved his free hand out and ran it through Geto's hair. It was surprisingly damp. Gojo looked closer and noticed Geto's wet clothes, and then the sound of falling rain reached him from outside the windows. He traced patterns through Geto's hair and waited. For what exactly he had no clue, perhaps for Geto to wake up and then apologize.
As Gojo was lost in thought, Geto began to stir and shift underneath him. Gojo didn't notice however, and just kept moving his hair one way then the other.
Geto suddenly moved his head to be upright beneath Gojo's hand. Which finally made Gojo stop moving his hair and freeze
"Satoru..?" Geto called.
"Yeah?" Gojo answered back, pulling his hand out of Geto's hair as soon as he remembered it was still there.
"Yaga..he.." Geto couldn't seem to finish his sentence.
Out of concern for the other boy, even though he didn't know how 'not-mad' Geto was right now, Gojo knelt down beside him.
"What about Yaga?" Gojo looked inquiringly at Geto.
When Geto didn't answer back for a long time, Gojo started to become frustrated. He inched closer to Geto, and looked him directly in the eyes.
"Hey, what's wrong?" He asked.
"I don't know.. my head just kinda hurts." Geto looked up at the ceiling, letting the back of his head rest on the couch. "Just give me a second to remember," he replied, closing his eyes.
Without thinking, Gojo pressed the back of his hand to Geto's forehead. And as he suspected, it was burning up abnormally.
"Suguru," Gojo exclaimed, "you have a fever!"
"I'm fine, don't worry about it." Geto slowly opened his eyes and looked at Gojo. "Oh yeah, I totally forgot, but there was a new mission Yaga wanted us to do." Geto sighed again and started to stand up. "We should get going—"
Gojo firmly pushed him back down by his shoulder.
"Did you not hear me? I said you have a fever." Gojo locked eyes with Geto. "And you probably got it from sleeping on the floor, without changing your wet clothes, which makes it my fault so sit back down."
"Seriously, I told Yaga I'd be back in a bit, so let's go. I can probably get some fever meds from Shoko, it's not a big deal." But before Geto could protest any further, Gojo directed him to sit on the couch and then walked behind it, opened a cupboard, walked back over, and then threw a blanket over him.
"No we're not going anywhere. You wanted to sleep on the cold hard floor while being drenched from the rain and now you have a fever. Plus this whole week you've been fighting sleep as much as you can, so rest while you can." Gojo could already see lines of frustration on Geto's forehead, and then he saw him open his mouth to protest further. Gojo felt his voice soften instantly. "Please, Suguru just sit tight for a couple of hours until you get better, that's all I ask."
Geto shut his mouth and relaxed back onto the couch. Gojo took this as a sign to continue, and he rushed into the kitchen. He opened every cupboard he could see, but there was no fever medication, which Gojo should have expected considering only he and Geto ever used the cabin. Making a mental note to purchase some medication later, He headed into the cabinet behind the couch again. This was where he and Geto had stored extra clothing for the off chance that they stayed the night. He pulled out one of his own black T-shirts and then headed back to the kitchen.
As he passed by the couch, he could feel Geto's eyes on him the entire time. He didn't say anything though, and he simply entered the kitchen again. He filled a bowl with hot water and then soaked the shirt inside of it. He wrung it out and then folded it as neatly as he could. He brought the shirt and the bowl over to where Geto was lying. He set down the bowl on the coffee table and then gently pushed down Geto's shoulders until he got the memo and laid back down onto the couch. Geto didn't take his eyes off of Gojo for one second, but he didn't say anything either.
Gojo chose to ignore the intense staring and simply put down the damp shirt onto Geto's forehead. He waited a couple of minutes and then took the shirt off of Geto and re-soaked it into the water to make it warm again. He repeated the process twice before finally getting put on edge about the never blinking purple eyes staring at him every time he shifted or blinked.
"What, is there something on my face?" He said rather harshly, which he then began to regret.
"Nothing, it's just I never expected you to care for someone other than yourself." Geto said as he turned his head towards the ceiling instead.
Gojo could feel a slight blush on his cheeks. "Hey be grateful I didn't knock you out cold the second you mentioned leaving for the mission." Gojo moved to take the shirt off of Geto's head again, but stopped when Geto began to mumble something under his breath.
"Speak louder, I can't hear you." Gojo was the one staring this time, at the tips of Geto's ears that were going pink. Either from the cold or something else.
"Never mind." Geto responded, his eyes focused on the seams of the blanket.
"No come on you clearly said something." Gojo swiftly removed the shirt and re-soaked it.
"I said…uh..thank you." Geto shyly mumbled.
A big smile formed on Gojo's face as he thought of the most embarrassing thing he could do right now. He leaned in and kissed Geto's forehead.
"It's okay, you have mummy to take care of you." Gojo leaned back to admire his work, and he started laughing uncontrollably. He was sure it wasn't even that funny, but Geto was frozen solid like a rock, and was red all over. Forgetting the shirt, Gojo grabbed his chest in an effort to calm himself, while Geto simply stared at him, bewildered.
"What the hell was that for?!" Geto exclaimed, to which Gojo only laughed harder.
GETO
Geto started at the boy in front of him. He was leaning on the table, clutching his white T-shirt in an effort to calm the rumble of laughter that was pouring from his mouth. Geto could do nothing but stare. He was oddly attracted to the way the boy's eyes squeezed shut, and the way he so easily kissed him moments earlier, the way a small tint of pink formed on his face, and the way his hair made him shine like the moon.
Geto couldn't help but remember a song he had heard Shoko playing the same morning.
"Cause she won't go away.."
Gojo was calming down now, his laughter slowing to a stop.
"It's you, hiding in Limelight, It's you, no one really likes…"
Gojo opened his eyes and stared at Geto, a small grin still plastered over his face.
"It's you, happy all the time.."
Staring at Geto's unwavering gaze, The other boy had worry etched all over his face. "Suguru?"
"It's you.. It's you, hiding in Limelight.."
Geto could feel his breath hitch.
"Oh, I'm sorry I shouldn't have kissed you." Gojo immediately folded into a mess. His blue eyes locked onto Geto's as he waited for a response, his hands balled into fists at his side.
In turn, Geto began to chuckle. He tried to hold it in, and sat up straight. But instead he just cannon-balled into full blown laughter and Gojo followed him soon after.
They sat there, laughing their heads off at something that shouldn't have been that funny. And their laughter only began to die down once Geto started coughing. And sneezing, which made Gojo remember the T-shirt, and he began the cycle of removing and adding the cold press onto Geto's forehead as they listened to the rainfall outside the window.
"Seriously though, thank you," Geto said, breaking the comfortable silence.
Gojo was going to answer when suddenly the ring of Geto's phone rang throughout the cabin.
Geto sighed before answering, "Can you get that for me? it's on the kitchen counter."
Gojo simply hummed in response, and got up to enter the kitchen. He saw Geto's phone immediately, nestled in-between his other belongings. He started at the caller ID. It read, "SHOKO." Gojo picked up the phone, and walked back over to where Geto was resting.
He pointed the screen back at Geto, and watched him read it. Geto was going to answer, but instead he broke out into a paroxysm of coughing. He motioned with one hand for Gojo to pick it up, as he tried to stop choking. Gojo patted his back a couple of times before realizing what he was supposed to do, and then pressing the answer button.
"Hello?" Shoko spoke immediately after Gojo picked up the call.
"Hey Doc, what's up?" Gojo answered, patting Geto's back as he did so.
"Satoru? why do you have Suguru's phone? Suguru was looking for you, where were you? Where's Suguru?"
Geto watched as Gojo scrambled to answer all of Shoko's questions in order.
