Work Text:
Wally and Barnaby spend a lot time together everyday. In fact they never went a day without talking to each other, even if it was just briefly.
But most of the time they also spend that time with one of the others Neighbors too. Most commonly, Home, Howdy, and Julie. As Home was Wally's home, and they do stuff there all the time. And they always went over to Howdy's shop to get a well deserved snack! And Julie insists they join her games a lot as well.
And don't get them wrong, they love their other friends. But sometimes it was also really nice just to spend time just the two of them.
So as today they're set up with a picnic under a tree. It was nice. Feeling the gentle breeze. Wally set against the tree, while Barnaby lay on the blanket. They're just talking about everything and nothing all at once. Just them.
And Barnaby takes out a homemade carrot cake! "Hey bud, wanna try this? Made it myself!"
Wally's eyes widened. "Really? What is it?"
Barnaby grins. "Carrot cake! You haven't tried it before right?"
"Yes." Wally stares at it in slight confusion. "Are there Carrots in it?" It doesn't look like it, but apparently apple pie has apples in it, even though it looks nothing like apples.
"Yup!" Barnaby declared. "The carrots are mixed in with the cake batter, so it won't really look like it though."
Wally hummed in acknowledgement. As Barnaby starts to cut two slices for them both.
"Here!" he hands one to the other.
Wally scans it curiously. Before taking a bite.
"What do you think? Should I never touch a kitchen again?" Barnaby jokes, before taking a bite himself.
"It's good." Wally puts simply. Before eating more of it.
Causing Barnaby's grin to widen. It was always a bit difficult to find foods Wally liked. So even if this isn't his favorite, he's just glad he likes it at all.
There's a long moment of comfortable silence as they sat and ate.
Until Wally asks. "Do you think bugs would like carrot cake more then normal carrots?"
Barnaby raises a brow. "Hm, I don't know. Most would probably never get the chance to even try cake."
"Yes... Frank says a lot of insects like sweet things though, and cake is much sweeter."
Barnaby chuckles. "That's true. I guess we'll not so different then the lil guys."
Wally's smile widened at the thought. "Yes. We're just big bugs."
Barnaby barked a laugh. "We sure are kid!"
They fall back into silence after that. quietly watching each other.
The sunlight makes them both shine like angels. Although it didn't take long for dark clouds to block the light slightly.
"Do you think we'd still be friends if we were bugs Barnaby?"
"I would like to think so. But you know a lot of bugs eat each other. Soooo I think it'd depend on what kind we were."
Wally hummed in thought. "But if I was a bug that eat others, like a spider, I wouldn't eat you. Would you eat me?"
Barnaby couldn't help but barked a laugh. "No. But I would probably think about it."
Wally's eyes widened in surprise and curiosity. "Really?"
"Oh yeah." Barnaby sits up a bit, to give the other a mischievous grin. "I'd have to know what you'd taste like. After all, you taste just like strawberries already. You think if I was a spider I wouldn't want a bite of ya?"
"O-oh-" Soft blush dusted Wally's face. "I'm not sure we'd... taste the same if we were bugs."
"Got me there. But if I still tasted like cotton candy you'll really telling me you wouldn't want a bite?"
There's a very long beat after that, as Wally looks anywhere but him now. Causing Barnaby to chuckle.
"Yeah... That's what I thought."
"Maybe... we'd just play bite like we do now." Wally suggests.
Barnaby grins. "Now I like that idea. Even as bugs, it'd still be us. So we'd definitely still be best friends."
Wally brightens. "Yes... And for all we know, we'd both be spiders."
Barnaby chuckles. "That's true too!"
Wally couldn't but think though, If everyone in Home were bugs, it'd made sense if Home was something like a spider, and made a web for them both to hang out on. He'd like to believe they'd all still be friends even as bugs. And he'd love to still live with Home.
"What bug do you want to be Barnaby?"
He hummed in thought. "I think I'd like to be a dragonfly! Mainly so I could fly! What bout you bud?"
"I don't know..." There were so many lovely bugs...
"I think you'd be a lil bee. They're cute but can still sting if needed."
"Oh. I'd like to be a bumblebee, then I'd still be fluffy, and I could fly too!"
"Exactly! Although..." Barnaby gets his mischievous grin back. "If Home's a bug too, you'd both be lovebugs, they're never seen without their other half."
There's a beat as Wally's eyes narrowed, but his smile widened. "Are you insulting us Barnaby?"
Barnaby lay a hand over his chest in mock offense. But his grin only widens. "No! I'm only teasing. After all, I'd probably be a lovebug with you both honestly. We're never seen without each other either you know."
Wally falls into shocked laughter at that thought. "Ha! Ha! Ha! Yes. That's true." There's a beat. Before he adds. "I think Home would be a ladybug."
Barnaby softens. "Oh yeah? Any reason why?"
Wally gets a fond smile. "They just remind me of him, with the colors, and being sweet... And I'd liked for Home to be able to fly with us too."
"Fair enough." Barnaby chuckle lightly.
They fall into silence for a bit after that.
Until Wally hesitantly stood, causing Barnaby to frown.
"I should get back home before it starts to rain..." They both glance at the rain looking clouds.
Before he's taking a step to leave. But as he does, Barnaby grabs his ankle, stopping him, be it almost making him fall too.
"Barnaby-" Wally starts, but the other interrupts.
"Don't go." It's barely above a whisper.
And it causes Wally to fall into silence, as his eyes widened.
"Okay..." He agrees instantly, because Barnaby wouldn't say that if it wasn't important enough. He can just fix his hair if it gets messed up, Barnaby matters more.
Barnaby let's out a breath of relief, but doesn't let go of him, instead just pulling his leg, getting him into a full hug.
Wally yelps slightly, but melts into the hold easily. The other was always so warm...
This causes Barnaby to grin, pulling him even closer, laying his head in his shoulder. Starting to rub a thumb gently against his back.
Wally makes a quiet hum, closing his eyes as he leans his head against his, just relishing in the meditative movement.
The soft breeze has long already turn into higher wind. But it still felt nice out here. Though the longer the sat here, the more dark the clouds got.
"Do you think the sun and clouds are friends?" Wally questions quietly.
Barnaby hummed in thought. "Maybe, I would think the sun wouldn't like the clouds blocking them, but on the other hand, maybe the sun would like to have that privacy."
"That's true... Do you think the moon is jealous of their friendship?"
Barnaby couldn't but barked a laugh in fondness. "I don't think so. The sun and moon can't always be there for each other, it'd be good to have another friend. I think they'd all three get along."
"Like... you, me and Home?"
"Exactly!"
They both startle at a loud boom ring out from the sky.
"Uh oh!" Barnaby starts. "We better get going before it really does-"
It starts pouring rain.
"O-oh-" Wally yelps, pulling his arms over his hair. But Barnaby immediately tightens his hold around him, hopping up, before running as fast as he could towards his house, as it was closer then Home.
"I think we made the sky emotional with our talk!" Barnaby jokes.
"Maybe they just realized how good of friends it has." Wally hummed, as they get to Barnaby's house.
"You may be right kid!"
As they walk inside, Barnaby shakes the water off his fur, the water hitting Wally in turn. Causing him to startle a laugh.
"Barnaby! Ha! Ha!"
"Oh- oops!" He chuckles back. "Sorry bud. I'll go get you a towel."
"Thank you..."
Despite saying that though, Wally follows him to the bathroom. Looking in the mirror. Even with getting out of the rain very quickly, his hair was still messed up.
"Here we are!" Barnaby hands him a very soft towel with a apple design. It was Wally's favorite.
"Thanks!" He dubs the towel around his face a little, smiling at the softness of it. Barnaby used to only have more firm rough ones, he never liked those much. So he was grateful when Barnaby declared that he gotten new soft towels.
"You know bud" Barnaby lays a hand over his back. "You're meant to be drying off, not cuddling the towel."
Wally wraps the towel around his hair now. "I would rather cuddle you. You're soft and warm."
Barnaby chuckles. "Well once you're dry, we could cuddle. I wasn't exactly done hugging you, but the rain had other plans."
"Ha, ha. Maybe the clouds were jealous."
Barnaby barked a laugh. "You'd never know!"
After a beat, Wally takes the towel off, dubbing his body. Though he knew it wasn't going to help his clothes all that much. So he lays it aside, before going to take a hairbrush.
But Barnaby stops him, wrapping both his hands within his own. "You're so handsome with your hair down~"
Wally smiles, but his eyes narrowed. "I need to get the knots out."
"Yes..." Barnaby lays a hand over the longer strands of his hair. "You know I could do that while we cuddle."
Wally makes a hum of surprise. Barnaby never got to touch his hair since it was always up, and Barnaby would never want to mess it up for him. But... he does really like when he does touch it...
"Okay..." He agrees quietly. Causing the other to grin. Pulling him into the bedroom now.
It was so easy to get comfortable on the bed together. Partly because the bed was very soft and cozy. But more because they'd both always be very snug with one another.
Nevertheless, Barnaby wrap one arm around Wally, as the other hand runs his fingers through his hair. As Wally lays his head on Barnaby's chest, listening to his soft heartbeat. He easily closes his eyes to the soft movement, and quiet rhythm.
Though it was just as easy for Barnaby to close his eyes. He always forgot just how soft Wally's hair was, since he could never really touched it. But he knew the other loves when he ruffled his hair, just not enough to let him ruin it most of the time. So all in all, the rain was more of a blessing for him really.
Still, neither could say exactly how long they lay there for... They just know the rain stopped as they were still together.
