Work Text:
A fancy box rested on the bed, wrapped in satin ribbon.
Susan lifted the top and carefully peeled the tissue paper to reveal a rich, blue velvet underneath.
Her heart skipped a beat as she unfolded the dress, so like the one she’d worn a thousand years ago. The memories rose unbidden: music, cheers, and a crown of golden flowers.
When she heard the knock, she quickly wiped her cheeks with trembling fingers.
“Oh, good, you've unwrapped it!” her mother exclaimed. “So, what do you think, Susan dear?”
Ignoring the lump in her throat, she made herself smile. “It’s beautiful.”
