Chapter 1: Cage

Chapter Text

KRIS, WHAT IS THAT?!?!

By NebulaHXI

The window was left open. A slight breeze made its way through the seal.

Kris was beginning to drift off, but at the sound of Susie's voice, they awoke with a jolt. Quickly, Kris got up and glanced over to the birdcage. The SOUL faced them as if it had eyes of its own.

Kris grabbed the blanket from their bed and rushed over to the cage. They could hear Susie climbing up to their window. Kris quickly covered up the SOUL's prison…

Just as the blanket came to a rest atop the cage, Susie peaked her head over the window sill. Her eyes squinted.

“Uhh… WHAT are you doing…?” she asked.

Kris shrugged.

Kris grinned nervously.

She finished climbing inside, scratching the wall of the house with her boots as she got both legs in.

“Anyway…” Susie began, “didn't mean to like, wake you up or anything, but…”

Susie turned slightly… before jolting right back around quickly…

“I'M BORED, KRIS!” she began, “I just can't get the Dark Worlds off my mind…”

Kris nodded. Something made a small thud behind them in the cage. Kris nudged the prison with their leg, face contorting slightly.

“I mean, c’mon, Kris! You can't look me in the eyes and tell me that YOU haven't enjoyed our adventures.”

Kris gave a thumbs up. The silence got a little too loud for a sec.

Suddenly, it looked like Susie realized something.

“Wait, wait, I didn't wake your MOM up breaking in a minute ago, right?”

Kris shrugged.

“I mean, I guess she wouldn't mind me staying over, but… I dunno.”

Kris glanced toward the window. They pointed to it with a distinct, shocked expression.

Susie stopped what she was saying and turned quickly to meet the sill of the window..

“Dude? D'you… see something?”

While Susie was turned, Kris looked to the cage… the soul was pressed against the bars, creating a soft red glow through the blanket atop it.

Kris put a finger to their mouth as if to politely silence the SOUL, even though it wasn't making any noise. It didn't reply, of course, but it did begin to move up and down in quick succession.

This annoyed Kris.

They blanketed the cage once more and turned around. Susie was still entranced by the window. Wait, no, upon further inspection, she had found some moss that had grown in the sill.

She cocked her head in a surprised manner.

…hesitantly, Kris indulged.

After the two finished, Susie began poking around the room.

“Arright, so you, uh… got anything cool around here?” She asked.

Kris began to get a little nervous. They shot the cage a quick glance.

“Thought I remembered you having an old console in here or something… think we can run Dragon Blazers on it…?”

Susie looked around Kris's bed, then Asriel's, then suddenly pushed past Kris to get to the cage.

Kris tried to turn.

They tried to tell Susie to double-check Asriel's bed, but…

“Dude, I think I see the glow from the power button under this blanket. Sweet, you already knew I was coming so you plugged it up, huh…? Man, you're such a—”

She threw the blanket away from the cage.
