Bustling and vibrant, the moon-drenched city of Seoul ceased to sleep, cars whizzing past under luminescent lights of nearby skyscrapers. The intoxicating, familiar aroma of tteokbokki and hotteok graced the hurrying passers-by, who were clad in an array of dull raincoats as a sprinkling of rain carefully tiptoed on the pitted bricks.
A lone figure strolled through the vast expanse, dressed plainly in a midnight black that matched the star-speckled sky, contrasting beautifully with his acid-green hair. Already drawing a few curious glances from pedestrians, his alternative persona of G Dragon would imminently attract questioning fans. Slightly tipsy from cheap wine, Kwon Jiyong finally sought out an escape from the regular chaos of concert preparation and idol standards.
Beckoning him invitingly, an empty park awaited his presence, fate calling to him as he unknowingly stumbled along the weathered path. Jiyong slowly made his way to a children's set of swings- long abandoned as the clock ticked into the early hours of the morning.
He collapsed into one of the plastic seats, swaying slightly as the icy sting of the metal chains bit into his palms. Jiyong tipped his head back and let the frigid air cool his aching head, finally unbound from the restrictive confines of his planned schedules, appointments and meetings he had to deal with daily. Here, he could finally be himself: he was free (for tonight, at least).
Crisp, cool, clean; the night rejuvenated Jiyong, flooding him with life again as he drank it in hungrily. The moon gleamed radiantly, casting a dim glow on the idol and allowing his dainty, yet striking, features to be elegantly highlighted.
Creaking steadily under the unexpected use, the swing alerted Jiyong’s presence to other late night observers and as he finally took in his surroundings, Jiyong realised he wasn’t alone.
Cloaked in the deep shadows of the weeping willow trees, a figure sat on a nearby bench, thoughtfully watching Jiyong, curious about the new presence. He was modestly dressed, a simple button up shirt and dark trousers encased his figure and similarly vibrant hair (bubblegum pink to spectacularly clash with the lime of Jiyong’s) completed the elegant and refined look.
Trailing his gaze over the stranger, Jiyong finally reached his face, almost gasping aloud at the unexpected handsome sight that his eyes viewed. Even though he was seated, Jiyong could imagine his imposing height and build compared to his own, more delicate, frame. An impressively honed jawline first captivated his attention, chiseled from the finest diamonds. His chocolatey brown eyes beckoned to Jiyong, the sweetest honey, addicting yet brimmed with consideration.
Staring at this preternatural pulchritude, it took him a minute to regain his senses before Jiyong boldly spoke, liquid confidence aiding him from the earlier alcohol.
“Hello, I’m Jiyong.” He eagerly waited for the stranger’s response.
“Hi, my name is Seunghyun.” Rich and deep, the unexpected low pitch of Seunghyun’s voice startled Jiyong as he attempted to keep up with the constant surprises of tonight.
“So, uhh,” he experimentally began, “what brings you to this random park in the middle of the night?”
A smirk ghosted at the corner of Seunghyun’s mouth. “Just… trying to get away from everything, you know.” Jiyong nodded his head; he couldn’t relate to anything more.
Strangely comforted by the unfamiliarity of the man and the darkness of the night, Jiyong started to tentatively communicate about his problems, dreams and future plans, confidence growing by the second with this stranger as Seunghyun’s presence slowed his racing thoughts, but had the opposite effect on his heartbeat.
Their conversation continued animatedly throughout the night, words melodically filling the deafening silence of their lives. Easily flipping between topics, the two men talked the night away, completely at peace with the other’s company.
“How did you decide on such a bold hair colour? For some reason, you don’t strike me as the kind of guy who thrives with attention,” Jiyong joked.
“Well, I just decided one day that I needed a change, and a friend of mine recommended pink hair as a joke; I took it a bit too seriously, as you can see. For some reason, you strike me as the kind of guy who does thrive with attention” Seunghyun quirked an eyebrow up at Jiyong playfully and he grinned exuberantly back.
As the conversation progressed, Jiyong discovered that Seunghyun also had a passion for music and was an aspiring music composer, even though he lacked the confidence to bestow his gift upon the world yet. Gummy and adorable, an incredibly wide grin blossomed on Jiyong’s face when he learned about his hidden rapping talent.
“I rap too! Please give me a demonstration!” Jiyong pleaded.
“Uhh,” Seunghyun shifted uncomfortably under the expectant gaze of Jiyong’s anticipatory, mahogany eyes, “well, I’m not very good…” He trailed off and gave in under the begging, innocent, doe-like stare of Jiyong.
Hesitant and awkward, Seunghyun began to rap a small extract of one of the songs he’s been composing and Jiyong’s jaw almost dropped in amazement. The rhythm and flow of his voice danced around him in an exquisite symphony, the sonorous tone of his voice making his hairs stand on end. Gliding effortlessly off his tongue, his words transitioned from melodic and graceful to harsh and rapid with just a twist of his expert mouth.
Illuminated by the silver glow of the moon, his breathtaking beauty was only intensified by the slivers of light in the dusky darkness. Jiyong admired Seunghyun in awe: his slightly scrunched eyes as he focused; his vivid hair glinting in the icy light; his animated mouth’s movement as he blessed him with the most beautiful voice he’s ever heard.
When Seunghyun abruptly ceased his short verse, Jiyong clapped energetically and praised the shy man excitedly.
“That was incredible! Seriously, it was probably the best rapping I have ever heard, and that’s saying something! You have some serious talent Seunghyun!”
At his jovial words, Seunghyun’s face finally broke out into a long awaited smile, the happiness on his face only accentuating his already astronomical beauty. Jiyong couldn’t tear his wide eyes away from his face, memorising every curve and contour of his radiant grin.
At some point during their spirited conversation that night, they had found their way to each other- Jiyong was now standing in front of Seunghyun, slightly towered over by the larger figure, but not in shadow. They complimented each other perfectly in every way and fate had enticed them both together, and now everything finally felt right.
Dawn began to break out and birds started their morning songs, though Jiyong still felt that Seunghyun’s voice was more beautiful than the harmonious chirps. An array of pinks, oranges and reds burst through the deep blues and purples of the night; their time tonight was almost over.
They stood in silence, comfortably, happy to just be in the other’s presence. As Jiyong gazed up at the gorgeous face above him, he felt a strange sense of longing, and dread settled in his stomach at the thought of the night ending. Frown ghosting the corner of his mouth, he never wanted this moment to end. However, he knew it had to, so he decided to not painfully drag it out and make the first move.
“Tonight was such a beautiful night,” Jiyong began, “I don’t want it to end.” He regretfully shattered the tranquility as he felt his phone start to vibrate in his pocket, a reminder of the duties he had to return to.
“I know. This has been the best night I’ve had in a long time; being with you has been extraordinary. Thank you Jiyong.” Seunghyun’s heartfelt and honest statement surprisingly filled Jiyong up with emotion and he could only nod silently.
They exchanged phone numbers and prepared to go their separate ways, returning back to their hectic lives, leaving this night in the past- forever preserved in their memories.
Just before they left their park, Jiong surprised himself by boldly standing up on his tiptoes and pressing a soft, delicate kiss on Seunghyun’s lips, a brief brush of skin- soft and sweet. Though their faces were frigid from the night, lips chapped, the kiss was perfect. The momentary contact warmed Jiyong down to his toes and he couldn’t restrain the gummy smile that returned.
Forever remembering it as the night he met his soulmate, Jiyong smiled to himself as he left Seunghyun, not glancing back. He wanted to keep the night preserved and untouched; an immaculate memory in a world of unpredictable ones.
Face warmed by the first sunbeams of the day, Jiyong glowed elatedly as he strolled through the bleached streets of Seoul- towards his home at last. G Dragon would return in a couple of hours, however he wished for the afterglow of Seunghyun to stay with him for as long as possible as he absentmindedly twirled a daisy (that Seunghyun had given him from the park) between his fingers, his lips still tingling pleasantly from their fleeting kiss.
“Goodnight.”
