Chapter Text
The world was cold, dark and dimmed. It was hard to recall or remember when it had become like this, one day it all just happened. The air got thicker, colder and suddenly it was a fight for life. Plans had flown over in the sky dropping bombs onto innocent people, guns would fire to kill and so much more that would be in grave in peoples nightmares.
As the days passed by in this apocalyptic world, Wifies couldn't help but think of his time in the foster system. How each day felt like it was dragging on. As time became a blurry concept he could no longer control, and as he became just a witness to his own life.
Wifies was 24, he was 22 when the outbreak first started. It felt so weird to him, how once his life was what someone would consider normal and typical, but then quickly it had changed so fast, almost unstoppable. When he was 22 he watched the plants die before him, yet he still kept living. Wifies has heard horror stories about people losing their minds and just ending it all, however Wifies didn't see himself going that way.
Because, he had one thing keeping him going, one thing keeping him at bay.
Derapchu.
His husband, his best friend and his partner for life. That was his ride or die. Wifies wasn't sure where he would be in this new found world without him. Despite everything the two of them were keeping each other going with every step and every push. Thankfully it wasn't like one of those movies Wifies could recall seeing before the outbreak where the lovers were separated in this world, they got lucky because they had each other and that was all they needed.
You didn't receive a lot in conditions like these, it was a miracle that they even still had one another but Wifies couldn't complain. He had to admit it did sound like a cheesy love story, conquering the world together, but would he have it any other way? No he wouldn't.
Neither of them were keeping track of the days or time, it was kind of pointless. They had tried to when the outbreak first started but then it became entirely useless. However it had been a few hours and it was easier to tell when the seasons were changing. Fall was approaching.
Wifies could tell by the gentle breezes in the air and the sudden change in temperature of the course of the past few days. Both having to dress warmer and both of them starting to plan out for the winter because that was just a nightmare in itself.
They needed supplies, a ton of them. They also needed to find somewhere where they could hold out for shelter when the blizzard would hit in winter. They had to do that all in the time of fall, which from past experiences they knew wouldn't be that long. They had at least a few weeks where they could continue to walk and raid but once those weeks were up they would have to seek shelter and set base up.
Currently, they were raiding a small convenience store. When they had gotten there, they were immediately met with a bloodied mess. Some shelves were tipped over, the ground was stained and it didn't smell pleasant. The first few steps they had taken into the store Wifies immediately had to start shooting at zombies who were just crawling on the ground.
Wifies made sure to take note of how awful the place looked. To be fair it wasn't much different to anything else they've seen. The two have definitely seen worse, yet at the same time it was sad. For some reason he always felt some type of grief coming across buildings like this… it never felt right. He always thought of the life that they could have had. One before all this mess.
He always yearned and dreamed for the life that him and Derapchu had before the outbreak. Where life seemed like it was so simple, when they never had to worry about a zombie eating you alive, instead stressing about things that seemed so silly now. A life where they wouldn't always have to be on edge and look out. He wondered where both him and husband would be in life, he hoped it would have been better than this.
He was quickly brought out of his thoughts when he heard footsteps from behind him, he wasn't too high on alert when he heard them because he just knew that the footsteps belonged to Derapchu. He glanced behind his shoulder and fully turned around when he saw that he was right, it was Derapchu who had his hands behind his back with the biggest grin on his face which only made Wifies want to just kiss him all over the face.
“Alright, guess what I've found.” Derapchu took another step towards him, Wifies stood at a height of 5’8 while Derapchu was exactly six foot.
Wifies hummed slightly as his gaze glanced down thinking about it for a moment. He was hoping for food, they were going to need it for winter and now. However he wasn't sure if he could take another can of peaches…
“Something that isn't peaches I would hope?” He tilted his head slightly, he had a slight smirk on his face.
Derapchus' grin only widden which filled Wifies with some hope that it was at least something good, but knowing his husband frankly it could be anything. He watched as Derapchu pulled his hands out from behind his back presenting the two items to Wifies.
“I found the finest luxuries you can get in an apocalypse, instant coffee and canned soup.”
What Derapchu had said was the closest to the truth you could get. Having something like coffee was literally a blessing sent from above and Wifies wasn't even religious. It was like a sense of normal… but they weren't anywhere near normal.
Honestly Wifies was just happy to see Derapchus smile, how proud he looked and just everything. It made some sort of happiness flare up inside him, it gave him hope. Derapchu was his beacon of hope in this world of darkness and misery.
“Well, I must be rich in life because having you here with me is the finest luxury,” The comment slipped, he didn't even think too much on his words and honestly he's done better flirting, but he still reached up and stole a kiss from his husband. “Thank you darling,”
Derapchu returned a smile to the shorter. The moment was quiet, not an uncomfortable silence, it never was when it was them. Yet, before Wifies could speak he heard a painfully familiar noise. The disgusting growls, groans and hisses. He turned his head and saw a sight that made his stomach turn a bit. A rotting hand clawing on the ground, it seemed like the zombie was once a woman.
Wifies was sure that no one could ever grow used to the look and smell of the zombies and their rotting features. He watched was she crawled closer, growling and attempting to scream, but before she got anywhere near them, Wifies quickly pulled his gun from off his bag and shot her a few times.
Pow.
—
Pow.
Pow.
“I need help!”
Parrot was surrounded, Wifies could see it out of the corner of his eyes as he shot at Zombies, Derapchu was also dealing with his own. He saw that Parrot was getting backed against a wall, it was literally disgusting to see the amount of Zombies crawling on each other to get to his best friend.
Wifies cursed as he reloaded his gun, he was running low on ammo, maybe going into the hardware store wasn't a good idea. None of them had expected to get swarmed by zombies. Yet, here the three of them were. He wondered how THIS many of these creatures got put into a hardware store of all places.
Wifies started shooting at the zombies after him, making sure to also keep an eye on the ones who were crawling on the ground, it made him want to throw up. They all looked so painfully rotted and disgusting. He hated looking into their hollowed out eyes.
“I'm out of ammo- I'm out!-”
He could hear the fear in Parrot's voice, the shaky tone.
Fuck.
“Parrot hold on-!”
Wifies shot at a zombie that got all too close to his foot, he looked over at Parrot who was literally backed into a wall with no way to escape. Derapchu thankfully started to shoot at some the ones near Parrot and also focusing on his own, he probably had lesser zombies on him out of the the three.
Parrot had the most. He had the most and he had no bullets in his gun. Wifies kept shooting at the ones on him and once he got enough off of him he turned and started to shoot at the ones on Parrot.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
It was gun shot after gun shot, he had finally made an opening for Parrot to get out and at least get away. Parrot quickly noticed, but maybe they were both too panicked to see that there was not a clear path for him to get out.
He watched as a zombie jumped onto Parrot, his best friend in the entire world, someone he has trusted with his life many times who had no way to defend himself had a zombie right on top of him.
Wifies heard Parrot scream and yell for help, and Wifies immediately started shooting at the zombie on him, yet as he shot more zombies got on top of Parrot, Derapchu was even doing his best to help Wifies save Parrot. Wifies had tears in his eyes as he just started shooting every one of those rotting bastards all for the sake of saving his friend.
Yet Wifies felt a cold skinny hand grab his left arm and Wifies quickly jerked away, more zombies were coming after him now, he couldn't defend both himself and his best friend. He could try but Wifies wasn't stupid. His mind felt all hazy as pure panic fell through him, like it was a tornado. He had to save Parrot.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
“WIFIES- DERAP-”
Parrot screamed, his voice cracking slightly when he yelled Derapchus' name. Derapchu was still shooting at the zombies on Parrot ever so desperately and Wifies was trying to shoot at the ones on him and the ones at Parrot. As he held his gun he didn't miss the way his hands were shaking as he aimed, being careful not to actually shoot Parrot.
Yet as Wifies looked over he watched as a zombie who was a bit faster then the others leaped onto Parrot his teeth sinking into his throat and suddenly it seemed the whole world froze around Wifies. Like time had stopped and they were moving in total slow motion.
“PARROT-”
—
The convenience store raid went better than expected. It's usually a hit or miss when it comes to those, but they thankfully gathered more food and also general supplies they would need.
Both him and Derapchu decided it would be best to take a stop and to rest, it was getting dark anyway and neither of them could remember when the last time they sat down and took a break was, so here they were. Both sat on the ground with a small fire going.
Wifies was slightly leaned onto Derapchu, his eyes were half lidded as he watched the fire. A soft warm ember hitting them both as they watched. He could feel his husband's hand in his hair, lightly combing through it. Making Wifies feel more tired than he already was. He hummed slightly as he adjusted himself to sit more comfortably against the taller.
Wifies glanced at their bags, he saw his worn down bag. Hanging off the side of the bag was a spy glass he unfortunately remembered receiving all too well. Grief struck him slightly as he remembered the friend who would always carry it, Derapchu would shoot a comment at him claiming he looked silly and that friend would just laugh.
He could remember that friend finding the spyglass, the pure joy on his face as he showed it off to Wifies and Derapchu. Wifies could remember fixing it for him a few times if it had gotten broken, and could remember a few times that the same friend had let him borrow it.
“Do you think I could have saved him?” Wifies voice was quiet, a horsed whisper, “Parrot I mean,”
It's been a year by now. It felt like it had been so long ago, yet at the same time it didn't feel like it. Sometimes it felt like it had just happened yesterday. They've spoken about this a few times. They were both pretty shaken up by Parrot's death. Hell out of everyone they knew before this outbreak Parrot was the only they knew that was for sure still alive, and now he wasn't.
Wifies wasn't even sure if his own foster sister was alive, or any of their other friends. Basically all the two had was Parrot. Someone determined and innocent who had died in that warehouse.
“I don't know,”
Derapchu finally replied, his voice started off quiet but had cracked slightly.
He felt the hand that was in Wifies hand lower down to his shoulder, the other holding him close. Maybe one of them was just destined to die in that warehouse. Maybe none of them could stop that.
Wifies felt Derapchu kiss the top of his head, almost like he knew the thoughts that were filling his mind. That was his husband. He knew him better than anyone else had, he'd know if he was upset, mad or happy before anyone else and Wifies would know the same for the other.
He let a small content sigh as he slightly glanced up at him, he watched Derapchu lean down and give the other a kiss and Wifies could only smile at the gesture.
“You're so sweet,” Wifies whispered, Derapchu chuckled slightly and shook his head looking up at the sky.
Wifies looked up at the sky with him, the stars were shining in the sky, some brighter than others. It was oddly comforting. They didn't have a bed to sleep in, but that was fine. They kept each other warm under a ceiling full of stars.
