When Tulips Meet

Summary:

Asgore starts feeling wistful as he holds onto hope for the life he lost. Flowery tries to distract him from those memories and brighten his mood.

Work Text:

Flowery and Asgore laid side by side in a field of soft grass. A gentle breeze swept across the Garden, making the tree leaves sway. Their picnic basket sat open nearby. An empty pie pan laid on the blanket and crumbs from sandwiches dotted their plates.

Flowery rested both hands behind his head. “So what did you think of the Butterscotch Pie, Gorey?”

“It was delicious! It’s been a while since I last had any.” Asgore said. “Back when me and Toriel were together, I sometimes tried to remake it on my own, but it never turned out well.”

“That’s okay! Here in the Dark World, you can have all the pies you want. Just the way you like it.” Flowery said.

Asgore gave a faint laugh. "That does sound nice."

His laughter soon faded as he stared at the sky, lost in thought.

“This Dark World…” Asgore said. “Once I figure out the mystery of Dark Worlds…everything will go back to normal. Me, Toriel, Asriel, Kris…we’ll be a happy family again…”

Flowery’s cheery expression slowly morphed into concern. He turned towards Asgore.

“Do you really believe Toriel will take you back?” He asked softly.

Asgore didn’t answer immediately.

“She’s only angry with me because of a misunderstanding. She blames me for…” Asgore paused, never finishing the sentence. “Everything will be fine, once I figure this out…”

Sometimes when Asgore told the Flowers about his day, Toriel was brought up. Asgore probably tried to spin the story positively, but their meetings must have been awkward and discouraging for him.

“You told us about some of your encounters with her. It sounds like she shrugs off your displays of affection.” Flowery said.

“It’s fine. I just want her to know I still care about her.” Asgore frowned. “…And that I miss her…”

Flowery’s heart sank. Asgore was so lonely and desperately still clinging to the past. He wished there was something he could do to help him get his mind off it.

“Well enough of that sad stuff, buddy.” Flowery said, sitting up. “Let’s talk about hugs!”

“Oh? What about hugs?” Asgore asked.

“You like giving hugs right? How about giving me one?”

A small, surprised laugh escaped Asgore. “Okay!”

Asgore planted a hand against the ground, preparing to sit up. But before he could, Flowery reached over.

“No need to sit up, big guy.”

Flowery scooted closer before climbing onto Asgore, surprising him, then he rested his head on Asgore’s chest. He could feel his racing heartbeat.

“You’re like an 8 feet tall fluffy pillow,” Flowery said, closing his eyes. “Soft and cuddly.”

“Haha, thank you.” Asgore said, blushing a little. “Um…you want me to hug you like this?”

“That’s right, old buddy!”

Not wanting to put too much pressure, Asgore slowly wrapped both large arms around Flowery. His embrace was gentle at first.

"...Like this?"

"A little more." Flowery said.

Then he gave Flowery a warm squeeze.

Flowery let out a delighted laugh. “Wow, that’s one strong hug! I like it,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to experience this as a regular flower, since it would easily crush me.”

“Haha, definitely not. I always make sure to treat flowers delicately.”

Asgore released Flowery from the hug while keeping a hand rested on his back. Still laying in place, Flowery lifted his head up and folded his arms in front of himself.

Flowery found himself studying Asgore's face. His soft fur, his golden beard, and his kind eyes. There was something strangely comforting about being this close.

“Hey Goregore, when was the last time you kissed anyone? Since the divorce, right?”

Asgore blinked, caught off guard. “Um…yeah…”

“Having lips is a new experience for me. I’m pretty curious about what it’s like.” Flowery grinned. “So how about it?”

“Um, how about what?”

Flowery placed his hands on Asgore’s shoulders and pulled himself near his face. He placed a hand on Asgore’s cheek, stroking his soft fur gently with his thumb.

“Let’s press our tulips together!” Flowery said with a wink.

Asgore stared at him, not sure what to say at first. He looked into Flowery's bright golden eyes. They were full of warmth and joy.

“Okay,” he finally said.

Flowery leaned in slowly before his lips met Asgore's in the gentlest of kisses. It lasted only a heartbeat. Just a soft press.

Then Flowery eased back, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

“I’m getting butterflies!” Flowery said.

“It was nice,” Asgore said, smiling. “I wouldn’t mind kissing a little more.”

“Sure we can!”

Flowery closed the distance, their lips meeting once again, lingering instead of immediately parting. Asgore relaxed into it, placing a hand to the back of Flowery's neck to gently draw him closer. Then Asgore deepened the kiss. Flowery's eyes widened for the briefest moment, pleasantly surprised by Asgore's sudden boldness, before he melted into it with an amused little hum. He returned the kiss just as eagerly. Flowery's hands remained caressing Asgore's face, while Asgore slowly stroked Flowery’s back. The fragrance of the garden filled the air around them.

They soon pulled away, eyes half-lidded as they gazed at each other. Neither of them spoke at first, the only sound being the breeze stirring the falling cherry blossoms.

“Refreshing! And breathtaking!” Flowery said, letting out a quiet, breathy laugh.

Asgore let out a soft chuckle in turn. “I think I got a little carried away there. Sorry.”

Flowery laughed, then slowly ran his hand over Asgore’s arm. “Don’t be sorry. I enjoyed it. Did you enjoy it?”

“I did.”

“Then that’s all that matters!”

Asgore smiled, but then it faltered. He averted his gaze and rubbed the back of his neck.

“Um, listen…you seem quite fond of me. While I enjoyed our kiss I—”

Flowery placed a finger against Asgore’s lips before he could continue.

“It’s okay, we can keep it casual.” Flowery said. “There’s a lot on your mind and I know you’re dealing with…complicated feelings right now. This was for fun!”

Asgore let out a sigh of relief. “…Thanks for understanding. I don’t want to make things awkward between us. You’re a nice fellow.”

“It’s no problem, buddy!”

He rolled off Asgore in one smooth motion and stood. Then he held out his hand.

“Well there’s still more to see in the Flower Kingdom, my king. Shall we get moving?”

Asgore took hold of his hand. “Yes. Let’s go.”

So they continued through the Garden. Flowery placed a hand on Asgore’s back as they walked side by side. He was happy to see that Asgore seemed to be in a much better mood now. There was still time to help Asgore realize he could be happy here. Still time to help him realize that he and the other Flowers care about him.

And still a chance to win his heart.
