Chapter 1: what ifs and meaningless promises.

Chapter Text

a simple check in and all of this coudl’ve been avoided. maybe if you took him out and talked it out with him, he wouldn’t be dead before your eyes right now.

you glance at satoru, who is actually doing worse than you are right now. shaky hands, wide eyes. hes sweating, too. keeps hyperventilating and yet makes no move to get closer or further away. simply staring at the corpse of his dead bestfriend, his blindfold bunched upwards, slightly damp.

you look back at suguru and by the look on his face, he seems peaceful even in death. a resigned smile on his face, as he sat there motionless.

you think about a lot of things. mostly about the what ifs had you helped suguru, and then some thoughts about how you’re gonna get satoru to not give up entirely. glancing back at satoru. very hesitantly, you place a hand on his shoulder in an attempt to console him.

its then he says it. “I killed suguru.” he mumbles, so quietly that you almost didn't hear it had you not stepped closer to him. you don’t speak— can’t speak— becase how can you respond to something like that?

neither answer changes the reality that your friend is still dead infront of the both of you. all because he had isolated himself to the point where he refused to ask for help from his closest friends— you, satoru & shoko.

if you picked up that call at 2pm he would’ve still been around, laughing and joking and slowly recovering. maybe you could’ve said something, broke through to him. or maybe you, satoru and shoko should've annoyed him till be let up on whatever it is that’s bothering him.

so many couldves, shoudlves and maybes and yet you’re in the one reality where you didn’t try to do anything to save him. you’d like to think that he’s still alive in another universe but could that even be true if you didn’t manage to save him in this one?

for the next hour or so, its just you, satoru, and the shell of suguru geto, your best friend. maybe you could’ve saved him.

in some distant reality where you weren’t such a coward to point things out. maybe he would’ve still been around.

next time, you’ll say something. you have to.
