The Lion Guard: The Gathering Storm (EPISODE 10)

Summary:

A worsening drought forces every animal from the Pride Lands to seek refuge at the Tree of Life, pushing its already limited resources to the breaking point. As tensions rise over water and survival, Kion and Rani realize that the crisis extends far beyond a single kingdom.

Ancient carvings hidden within the Tree of Life reveal that long ago, the rulers of many lands united in times of great danger. Now, with fear spreading across the Circle of Life and unseen enemies watching from the shadows, Kion must make a choice that could change every kingdom forever.

Far away, Hugawa quietly watches the first stage of his plan unfold.

Work Text:

Morning at the Tree of Life felt different.

Not peaceful.

Expectant.

The valley below was already crowded.

Animals from the Pride Lands shared the same space with the residents of the Tree of Life.

Some tried to help each other.

Others simply watched.

Kion stood near the roots of the Tree of Life.

Rani approached him.

— You barely slept.

Kion smiled faintly.

— Neither did you.

Rani looked toward the valley.

— They're afraid.

Kion nodded.

— And fear spreads faster than drought.

Silence.

Vitani climbed onto the rocks nearby.

— The Lion Guard has finished the morning patrol.

Pause.

— Nothing unusual.

Another pause.

— Which somehow worries me even more.

Before anyone could answer—

Anga descended from the sky.

Fast.

Focused.

— More animals are arriving.

Kion looked up.

— From the Pride Lands?

Anga nodded.

— The last groups.

— Everyone is here now.

Silence.

Rani quietly looked across the valley.

— Then this truly is everyone's problem now.

Near the main watering hole.

Animals stood shoulder to shoulder.

Penguins.

Mountain goats.

Crocodiles.

Zebras.

Antelopes.

No one wanted trouble.

But everyone needed water.

Beshte tried to keep everyone calm.

Bunga whispered beside him:

— I officially miss boring days.

Beshte smiled nervously.

— Me too.

Far away.

Among the western cliffs.

A panther silently watched the Tree of Life.

Beside him sat a cougar.

Neither of them spoke.

They simply watched.

The panther finally broke the silence.

— It has begun.

The cougar smiled.

— Better than we expected.

They disappeared into the shadows.

Later that morning.

The valley had become louder.

Not because more animals had arrived.

Because patience was disappearing.

Near the watering hole two mountain goats argued with a crocodile from the Pride Lands.

— We were here first!

— Everyone needs water!

— Then wait your turn!

The argument grew louder.

Until Vitani stepped between them.

— Enough.

Silence.

Not because they agreed.

Because they recognized authority.

The tension eased.

But only for a moment.

On a rocky ledge above the valley.

Kion, Rani and Vitani watched everything below.

Rani quietly said:

— This won't last.

Kion sighed.

— I know.

Vitani folded her ears.

— We're treating the symptoms.

— Not the problem.

Silence.

Anga landed nearby.

— I've been flying across the valley.

Pause.

— The streams are still shrinking.

Kion lowered his gaze.

— Then we have even less time than we thought.

A strong gust of wind swept across the cliffs.

For a brief moment—

everyone felt it.

Not danger.

A change.

Far away.

Hidden between ancient rocks.

Someone was watching.

Again.

— Kion...

Kion turned around.

Anga landed quickly beside him.

— I just saw something.

Rani became alert.

— What happened?

— Near the western cliffs.

— Someone was watching the Tree of Life.

Vitani frowned.

— Who?

Anga shook her head.

— I don't know.

— But it wasn't a lion.

— And it wasn't a cheetah.

Pause.

— And whoever it was clearly didn't want to be seen.

Kion looked toward the western cliffs.

— Makali?

— No.

— Someone else.

Silence.

Rani exchanged a glance with Kion.

Lately, there seemed to be fewer answers...

and more questions.

— Can you show us where? — Vitani asked.

Anga nodded.

— Of course.

Nearby.

At one of the watering holes.

The line barely moved.

Frustration was growing.

A young deer stepped forward.

— We've been waiting half a day!

— So have we! — replied a zebra from the Pride Lands.

— This is our watering hole!

— Now it belongs to everyone!

The voices grew louder.

Until Ulu landed on a large rock overlooking the watering hole.

She spread her wings slightly.

— Enough.

Nobody listened.

— I said enough.

This time everyone fell silent.

For a few seconds.

But the tension remained.

Ulu could see it.

And that worried her more than the argument itself.

Near the old stream.

Chaguo carefully examined the stone.

The divided line.

The same symbol.

Again.

He ran his paw across the scratches.

Fresh.

Too fresh.

Suddenly his gaze stopped.

A little lower.

Beneath the moss.

There were older markings.

Chaguo carefully brushed the moss aside.

His eyes widened.

It was a drawing.

Part of a map.

Almost erased by time.

But still visible.

The Tree of Life was marked on it.

The Pride Lands.

And one more territory.

An unfamiliar kingdom.

— What are you hiding?.. — Chaguo whispered.

Far among the rocks.

The panther stood on a ledge.

The cougar sat beside him.

Below them stretched the Tree of Life.

Crowded.

Tired.

Tense.

The cougar smiled.

— They're already starting to crack.

The panther remained silent.

— You can hear them from here.

Arguments.

Shouting.

Frustration.

The panther kept looking ahead.

— Not yet.

The cougar looked at him in surprise.

— Not yet?

— These are only the first cracks.

His expression remained calm.

— The real fracture is still ahead.

Silence settled over the Tree of Life.

Not the peaceful silence of evening…

The silence of countless thoughts.

Kion remained standing near the great roots of the Tree of Life.

Rani stood beside him.

Vitani was still nearby, quietly watching the gathered animals below.

For several moments, no one spoke.

Finally, Rani broke the silence.

— If every kingdom is facing the same drought...

— ...then none of us can solve it alone.

Kion slowly nodded.

— And if every kingdom starts protecting only its own land...

Pause.

— Then everything Makali wanted will happen without him even being here.

Vitani folded her forelegs.

— Fear divides faster than claws ever could.

Another quiet pause followed.

High above them, a familiar pair of wings glided through the mountain air.

Ulu landed gracefully on one of the ancient branches of the Tree of Life.

She looked at the three lions before speaking.

— I searched through the oldest carvings on the Tree.

Everyone turned toward her.

Makini arrived only a few moments later.

— Did you find anything?

Ulu nodded.

— Not a name.

Pause.

— A warning.

She spread one wing toward an ancient section of the Tree's bark.

Deep beneath centuries of new growth, barely visible, old symbols had been carved into the living wood.

Makini carefully examined them.

Her eyes widened.

— These marks...

— They're older than Askari.

Rani looked surprised.

— Older?

Makini slowly nodded.

— Much older.

She carefully traced one of the carved lines with her paw.

— These symbols don't describe a battle.

Pause.

— They describe a gathering.

Vitani looked toward the ancient carvings.

— A gathering of who?

Ulu answered quietly.

— Kings.

Silence.

Even the mountain wind seemed to pause.

Kion slowly stepped closer to the Tree.

— Kings...

Ulu nodded.

— Long ago, when the Circle of Life faced a crisis that affected every land...

— The rulers did not face it separately.

Pause.

— They came here.

Makini looked at another carving.

Several different symbols surrounded the Tree itself.

Each one was unique.

Each represented a different kingdom.

— These aren't decorations...

Makini whispered.

— They're royal marks.

Rani looked toward Kion.

She already understood.

Kion remained silent for several moments.

Then he looked across the valley where animals from many lands had gathered.

The Pride Lands.

The Tree of Life.

And countless others that had yet to arrive.

— Then we need to do the same.

Vitani nodded immediately.

— A council.

Kion looked at her.

— Not just a meeting.

Pause.

— An alliance.

Makini smiled slightly.

— That hasn't happened for generations.

Ulu slowly spread her wings again.

— The Tree remembers the paths between kingdoms.

Everyone looked at her.

— I can carry messages faster than anyone on the ground.

Kion nodded.

— Then we begin immediately.

Rani stepped beside him.

— Every neighboring kingdom deserves to know the truth.

Vitani added firmly,

— And every king deserves the chance to choose before fear chooses for them.

A strong mountain wind swept through the branches.

The ancient carvings seemed almost alive beneath the fading sunlight.

Far away...

Beyond the mountains...

Beyond the canyons...

Beyond lands no one at the Tree of Life had seen in generations...

Other rulers unknowingly faced the same crisis.

Shrinking rivers.

Dry forests.

Animals growing desperate.

The Circle of Life was changing.

And for the first time in many generations...

The kingdoms would have to face it together.

Far below the mountains...

Hidden deep inside the ancient canyons...

Hugawa slowly opened his eyes.

Makali stood nearby without speaking.

Hugawa smiled faintly.

— Good...

Pause.

— Let them gather.

Makali looked toward him.

— Isn't that exactly what we wanted to prevent?

Hugawa's smile grew slightly.

— No.

Pause.

— It's exactly what I wanted them to do.

He slowly stood.

His gaze disappeared into the darkness beyond the canyon.

— When every king stands in one place...

Pause.

— Every kingdom becomes vulnerable.

Silence.

Only the wind answered him.

Then Hugawa quietly whispered:

— The first move...

— is finally complete.
