Summary:

A story of Katsuki and Izuku based on different lyrics from the song “I know the End” by Phoebe Bridgers.

Izuku and Katsuki had graduated from UA 3 years ago, and for what they would argue is purely for practical reasons they had moved in together. Overtime, they had slowly developed their normal routine. However, as Izuku goes through a stressful period with flareups and stresses of his new life he starts to distance himself without realizing, throwing off their routine. Despite what Izuku thought Katsuki had indeed noticed and he wasn’t just gonna watch as his childhood best friend, and the boy he had crushed on for years struggled silently.

Notes:

This is my first story on Ao3 so please forgive the bad writing! Chapter one with be inspired by the first few lyrics of I know the End (beginning -> and you had to go, I know, I know, I know). Please feel free to leave any feedback!! 🫶

Work Text:

It was a late, cool, summer night. Izuku had been rolling around in his bed for what felt like decades, but in reality was probably 30 minutes. His mind was filled with thoughts but yet he couldn’t seem to follow one. He felt like an old computer with an insane amount of tabs that never loaded.

As he turned in bed he turned to face his left wall, he started to zone out, making faces and shapes out of the bumps on the wall. For some reason looking in that area gave him a small comfort, maybe it was because he wasn’t overwhelmed but the darkness that enveloped his room, or maybe it’s because he knew that Katsuki was just a room over if anything happened. Though even if he did need help he wouldn’t wanna disturbs Katsuki’s sleep, he knew he valued all 8 hours of sleep her got.

As he stared at the wall his eyelids slowly got heavier and his breathe slowed. Sleep had finally taken a hold of Izuku at a nice 2:36am.

Izuku’s eyes slowly opened as the world slowly came into focus. He wasn’t in his room where he had fallen asleep. He looked around in confusion before he felt his heart drop to his stomach. He noticed the familiar environment, destroyed building, emptied streets, and as he gazed ahead he saw a small blonde blur. He immediately started to rush towards the blur, but as he did rain started falling from the sky, faster and faster as he got closer, dragging and slowing him down. As he got to be feet away from the blonde blur he felt his breathe shaking. He knew what he was gonna see but he still couldn’t help his reaction.

He fell to his knees beside Katsuki, his hero suit was drenched in blood around his heart with a bloodied hand reaching at the crumbled all might card that now had drops of blood on it. Izuku grabbed Katsuki and pulled him close. “Kacchan, Kacchan, open your eyes come on…” He begged, soon Katsuki eyes opened as if listening to Izuku’s pleas, however his normally fiery crimson eyes were now dull. Katsuki’s mouth slowly opened speaking words that made Izuku’s heart drop even lower. “Y-you…we’re late… I t-trusted..you”

Suddenly Izuku woke up in a cold sweat as he tried to catch his breathe. He closed his eyes tight as he tried to catch his breath. He pictured him and Katsuki walking to his mom’s house for a joint family dinner, he saw Katsuki returning after a patrol. The pictures slightly calmed him down.

He stood up as his breathe returned to normal, mistake. His legs got all shaken and his vision turned blurred, he fell back onto his bed. Sometimes Izuku just wished he could live a normal life. As much as he loved a world with heroes and quirks, which was a a lot, a small part of him also want to just live normally. Not wanting to be stuck with the consequences of being a child sent to war.

He finally caught his breathe and thoughts enough to stand up and go to the kitchen. As he walked down the hallway he felt the tension in his shoulders drop as he saw Katsuki cooking. He hadn’t even realized how tense his body was. “Sit at the table, I’m almost done with breakfast.” Katsuki grumbled as he hear Izuku walking towards the kitchen. Izuku complied.

The apartment was small, not suffocatingly but instead a comfy small. Their dining table only really fit 2 comfortably maybe 4 if they were squished tightly, but it was convenient since they never really had company. Izuku started off at the distance as he waited for Katsuki to come to the table. He thought about all the papers he had to grade, about how he had been slacking on patrol, about how he needed to do more around the apartment. Recently Izuku had been feeling drained, normally he’d come home and grade papers and eventually when Katsuki returned they would discuss their days and watch tv together. But now a days Izuku would get home from teaching and just slump into bed, he couldn’t tell if it was because of the lack of sleep or the way his muscles ached now even at the slightest moment, or maybe a mix of the both. He felt guilty, whenever Katsuki had come home Izuku would be in his room, too exhausted and overwhelmed to do anything, especially try to act normal in front of Katsuki.

The years of their complex relationship had made them so interconnected to one another. They knew each others tells, when the other was struggling, and when they needed space.

“Izuku?” Katsuki asked as he started to eat his breakfast. When had Katsuki sat down? “What my food don’t meet your standards?” Katsuki joked as he continued to eat, now keeping a light watch on Izuku.

“No, no, it looks great!! Just thinking about some papers I have to grade.” Izuku wasn’t completely lying, he just only told a small bit of the truth. He started to eat the meal Katsuki had made him. He had made Tamago Kake Gohan, usually it wasn’t a supper eccentric dish, however everything Katsuki cooked seemed to have a deeper flavor and enjoyment to it.

“My god, you really are a nerd, thinking about work even while eating.” Katsuki rolled his eyes. Despite his hard exterior Izuku knew Katsuki cared, and that meant more than he knew.

Slowly as they ate the fell into they’re normal rhythm, eating while discussing what they had planned in between bites, joking with one another, and trying to figure out what they were going to do this weekend. On weekends Izuku and Katsuki would both usually have off and they would try to hangout, even if it was something as simple as watching a movie while eating take out, it was their little ritual.

This weekend Katsuki mentioned a there was supposed to be a vendor market nearby with a variety of goods.

As they both finished breakfast Katsuki placed their plates in the sink before putting on his shoes and saying a goodbye as he left for patrol. Izuku couldn’t help but feel a tang of jealousy, he hadn’t been able to use his hero suit recently due to damage it had sustained after a prior incident, not like he really could with how sore his muscles had been as of recent.

——

Katsuki and Izuku settled into a comfortable pace as they walked to the market. It was late afternoon as the day started to cool down. Him and Katsuki had both slept in a little, know they could before they got ready to head to the vendors market. As they walked izuku talked about a training session he had conducted yesterday and how much his students were improving. Unbeknownst to Izuku, katsuki was staring at him. Rather than his normal gaze that had a slight glare to it always, his eyes were soft. He enjoyed the sense of normalcy he got seeing izuku talk and ramble about quirks.

He hadn’t failed to notice how Izuku had been acting oddly as if recent. Whenever Katsuki returned he had always seemed so excited to talk about their days and just enjoy each others companies before night fell. As of recent he’d seen how Izuku seemed more empty almost, it wasn’t a lot or obvious by any means, just enough that he couldn’t notice. As the days went by he started to see Izuku staring into the distance and staying in his room more and more. Katsuki hadn’t said anything though, not yet.

As they got closer and the stands became more into focus Izuku stopped dead in his tracks, eyes lighting up. Katsuki stopped a step ahead of izuku, a confused look on his face until he followed where Izuku’s eyes were looking and he sighed.

Izuku had been looking at a booth fully decked out in All Might merch. Posters, banners, figures, clothes, the whole nine yards. Izuku looked at Katsuki with big eyes and a puppy dog look, Katsuki sighed once more as he walked towards the booth, Izuku quickly caught up to katsuki as he walked.

Izuku was big eyed, he was looking at posters and figures, though most he had there were a few that he hadn’t seen before, his eyes lighted up at the sight. Katsuki couldn’t help but give a small smile, not at the merch, but at how happy Izuku was.

Izuku quickly turned around holding 2 pajama pants and a big smile. “Kacchan can we get matching pj pants?” Izuku stared silently at Katsuki waiting, after a minute Izuku continued “pretty pleaseee” he said with his big eyes shining at the thought.

“Fine, nerd. Only because I know you’ll be annoying about it if I don’t.” As Katsuki finished he saw the excitement Izuku was trying his best to contain, though failing miserably.

Izuku had bought a new figure and the pj pants, they walked and stopped at a couple booths, tried free samples here and there. The conversation had come easily, they joked when they saw ridiculous things, pointed out throngs they thought the other would like, that was until Katsuki’s phone rings.

Katsuki let out a deep sigh before picking it up, a bored expression on his face. Until it was replaced with a slight mix of suprise and urgency. After he got off the phone he quickly turned to Izuku. “Izuku, there’s something happening and the agency said they need me right away, I’m sorry but I have to go.” He said a little sad himself that their day would have to end almost as soon as it started.

Izuku had a polite smile as he nodded, Katsuki grabbed his shoulder and smiled before saying a quick sorry and then rushing towards their apartment to grab his suit and go.

Izuku knew he had to leave, he knew it was important, but a weird feeling arose. It was one of anger, sadness, and jealousy. Izuku didn’t like the feeling so he pushed it down.

Notes:

I hope this wasn’t too hard of a read, this first chapter is kinda boring as I try to set the scene. But anyways, thank you for reading!!
