That One Friend Who FaceTimes You While Doing the Weirdest Activities Imaginable

Summary:

A strange cave gives Ezra cell reception, so he does the only local thing and face times his best friend, who’s in the middle of an espionage thriller

Notes:

So this au did not start off as mine, but I’ve expanded on it enough that I would have been strange to not include it in this challenge. The original idea was by the lovely JessicasPi, and we’ve both yapped about it on tumblr a good deal. Anyways I don’t think I’ll ever be over it, I just keep on writing out more and more ideas for it, which was not helped by a full mcu rewatch. I guess the things you were into in middle school really do haunt you forever. This one shot is basically the result of a joke I wanted to make, and now Winter Soldier and The Dark World happen at the exact same time and the two teens get dragged along into them.

Work Text:

A buzzing canceled any progress Sabine had made towards falling asleep. She rolled over in the borrowed bed and fumbled to find her phone, all annoyance falling when she saw the name of who was calling. Quickly, she slid to answer and was greeted by a very familiar smile.

“Sabine!” Ezra exclaimed through the phone.

“Ezra,” she greeted in turn, trying to deduce where her best friend was. All she could see was black and who she thought was Luke. “Aren’t you supposed to be in space?”

“I am.” He paused. “Or at least I think I still am. Things have been weird enough that teleportation wouldn’t surprise me.”

“Okay.” She didn’t even try to figure out what that meant. “But how do you have service?”

“No clue! We all just walked into this weird cave place,” he spun around the camera, which picked up little other than the people he was with, “and my phone started blowing up with notifications. So now I’m on the phone with you.”

“So you are.” She pushed herself up into a sitting position. “How’s space been?”

“Insane. So first off,” he began, “they were able to detach that stone from me, and it didn’t even hurt or anything. Then I awkwardly hung around during family bonding, but it was honestly worth it because the food on Asgard was so good. And Rex taught me how to wield a couple of his weapons that we then sparred with and he totally pummeled me.”

“And I missed it?”

“Yes, but I’m sure Leia will send you the video.” He rolled his eyes in false annoyance. “But then everything went south real quick when these dark elves attacked, except they don’t really look like elves to me and they call themselves something completely different but everyone else keeps calling them elves so I am too. Apparently Obi-Wan’s wife, who was killed in the attack by the way, was part of it and her sister still is. Said sister put a knife to my throat."

“She what?” Sabine yelped.

“I’m fine!” he reassured. “So anyways we all ran off and brought Ahsoka with us and then she died and the elves got the stone and now we’re here.”

Ezra panted while she took in the entirety of his story, somehow finding it entirely plausible that he of all people would end up in this situation. “Sounds exciting.”

“No kidding,” he mumbled. “I bet your week has been relaxing.”

“Not really,” she admitted, trying to keep her expression schooled.

“What do you–” he squinted. “You aren’t in your bedroom.”

“No.” She bit her lip. “I’m in the Erso’s guest room.”

He snorted. “Why are you at Jyn’s house?”

“We’re using it at a safehouse.”

“Who are you hiding from?” His tone quickly turned serious.

She shrugged to downplay the situation. “Sheild.”

“Why would you be hiding from them?”

“They, uh,” she looked away, “might have been infiltrated by Hydra. Since before either of us were alive.”

His jaw dropped. “All of Shield?"

“Only like, a third of it,” she estimated, pulling her comforter over the knees pressed against her chest. “I think.”

He blinked a few times. “Huh. So what are you trying to do now?”

“Survive,” she admitted. “They sent two assassins after me and Kanan.”

“Assassins?” His voice cracked, which she suddenly realized wasn’t as common as it once was. “Like…August of 2012 assassin?”

“Yeah. Her and one other.” She sighed. “We don’t have a lick of a clue who he is, but apparently he’s been around since the 50’s.”

Ezra looked like he was about to say something, but his attention quickly shifted somewhere beyond his phone. “Where’d your mom go?”

“I don’t know,” Leia responded. “She just vanished.”

“Uh,” Ezra looked back to the screen, “we’re gonna have to pick this up later. Maybe over shawarma?”

“Sounds perfect.” Sabine tried to believe what she was saying, knowing full well that there was no way chatting with her was more important than what was going on around him. “Good luck with your universe saving stuff.”

“Good luck with your Earth saving stuff,” he responded with a smile, before sobering. “And Sabine? Stay safe.”

“You too,” she urged. “The whole reason I’m saving the world is so you can come back to it.”

“Same here,” he grinned, and for a moment she could let herself believe that everything really would be okay. “Okay, got to go. Love you.”

“Love you too,” she got out moments before he hung up.

Both her body and phone flopped back against the mattress. She was practically aching to have him here with her, but at the same time was so glad he was protected from it. After everything was over, both here and in the cosmos, they would get to hang out again. Until then, she just had to get some sleep before trying to overthrow a corrupted government agency.
