Work Text:

It's finally reached night when things are starting to cool down. For most people this was welcomed after having to go through their whole day withstanding the heat under the sun. Though for Arthur, who is always cold, it is not a very nice time to be outside. During a time like this he would much rather be inside and hopefully sitting in front of a fire or under a blanket. He knows though, that to see these fireworks he would have to actually be outside in the cool air, so he tries his best to ignore the chill. Really, after dealing with it for all his life he should be used to it, but sadly not.

It's not that he hasn't seen fireworks before, because he has, and Paul has as well. He knew they should be preparing for their mission tomorrow, but he'd heard there were fireworks being set off tonight and thought it would've been a nice way to end the day. He had always been a fan of seeing fireworks being set off over water, so staying in Yokohama for the night to see them sounded like a perfect plan. He and Paul can share a bottle of wine and enjoy the fireworks. Tomorrow they would have to go back to their work, but tonight they could relax. It wasn't often they had the chance to do something like this after all.

"The fireworks are supposed to start any minute now." Arthur says, looking over to see Paul pouring them each a glass of wine. It wasn't anything too fancy or crazy expensive, just something he'd seen earlier in the day and thought might've been nice to enjoy. A better bottle could be opened on a special occasion, and as much as this was a nice night, it didn't quite count. "I heard there was a better spot to see them by the river, but I thought it would be nice to be able to actually sit down."

"I'm sure it would be crowded with people anyway." Paul tells him, resting an arm on the table between them. He doesn't seem to be anticipating the fireworks that much, but Arthur appreciates his partner indulging him anyway. He has a feeling the blonde had been looking forward to the wine more than whatever was going to be happening in the sky. "It'll be quieter over here. We'd have a much harder time enjoying the fireworks while hearing many conversations."

That's true. There were only a few people nearby at the moment and they were being rather quiet. If he heard the spot by the river was a good place to see the fireworks, he's sure many other people had as well, which means it would be rather crowded. It's always a bit more difficult to relax and enjoy something when he's surrounded by people. Arthur opens his mouth to ask something, about the mission they had the next day, but decides against it. The whole reason he wanted to do something like this was to relax and he knew that would not be a relaxing topic to talk about.

He takes a sip of the wine instead, then sets the glass back down and looks at the sky. The fireworks had started. There wasn't anything too big yet, still rather small ones being set off, but they look beautiful nonetheless. The sky was dark so they were able to be seen clearly. "It's nice to be able to do something like this. Usually we don't have the time."

"If we went to festivals and went sightseeing at every place we go for a mission, we would never get anything done." Paul reminds him. Which was unfortunately true. They usually wanted to get in and out as quick as possible, so things like this weren't on either of their minds. "You're lucky it's not far enough in the year for the night to be freezing. You wouldn't have been able to see your fireworks."

Most people would consider the temperature at the moment 'warm' and he was already freezing, but that wasn't much of a surprise. Even in the middle of the day during summer he could feel cold. "If it was colder we could've always found a spot inside to look at them. I do admit, we get a nicer view sitting outside like this. Even if it is cold."

The wine was helping slightly with the chill, though not enough to make much of a difference. Paul was right though, if the temperature was colder he most likely wouldn't have wanted to sit out here like this, or at least not long enough to be able to actually see the fireworks in the air. Bigger ones were being set off now, lighting up the sky in all sorts of colours. It was beautiful. He was glad that he and Paul could enjoy things like this sometimes, as brief as the moments were.

"I was thinking of buying a few sparklers." He saw people using them the last time he was able to watch fireworks. That had been a while ago, but he was sure the sparklers wouldn't have changed. "I realized it would be nicer just to see the big ones in the sky."

"The sparklers aren't much to look at anyway. Maybe for the first few seconds they're nice, but after that.." His partner trails off, taking a sip out of his glass. "It doesn't seem worth it. At least the ones that these people are setting off look pretty."

Arthur settles back in his chair, moving his gaze from the fireworks lighting the sky to look at his partner. "Are you ready for tomorrow? We've done plenty of successful missions, I doubt Arahabaki will change that." "Right. Of course not."

Notes:

I have a bit of a headache while writing this so I'm sorry the ending might seem a little rushed, but happy rimlaine week
