Intern rubbed their eyes, it was shift 21 and they were starting it get really tired. Like really tired. Unbelievably tired, not even coffee could save them at this stage.
They stumbled into the room 3, spotting a bed monster, or maybe heard was a better word for it, their breathing alerted them before they even stepped in.
Intern stared at the monster’s hands through the window, they were more than large enough to wrap around Intern’s waist and lift them up into the sky… before swallowing them whole ofcourse. But they did like Maple syrup…
Intern knew this was an awful idea. It was the most idiotic, idea that had every formed in their head and possibly in anybodies head ever. But Intern was tired, and this sounded like a good way to take a nap with a good excuse.
”Oh I wasn’t napping on the job, the monster grabbed me thats all!” Intern recited to themselves as they grabbed some maple syrup. If this worked, they would be a genius. If it didn’t? Well, they wouldn’t be here to be embarrassed atleast.
They slowly opened the door, spotting the monsters blood red eyes snap onto them immediately.
”Hey buddy, want some Maple syrup?” They waved the maple syrup just out of reach of the bed monster. It’s breathing got even heavier as it stared at it.
”Welp, you only live once.” Intern mumbled to themselves as they popped open the Maple syrup, and poured a good bit if it onto their sweater, avoiding their fur as well as they could.
”Alright, here goes nothing…” they took a step towards the Bed Monster, and before they could even flinch, they were grabbed by the Bed Monster and dragged closer.
Just as Intern expected, their hands were more than enough to completely wrap around their waist, the Intern had the Maple syrup in their left hand in case it all went wrong, but surprisingly enough, just having some of it on them seemed to hold off the Bed Monster from taking their sanity. Or killing them.
The Bed Monsters hands were surprisingly warm. And as Intern sat in the Monsters embrace, they could feel sleep slowly but surely finally creep up on them.
”This isn’t all to bad…” Intern mumbled, they could’ve sworn the Bed Monster’s eyes had a flash of emotion in them, and maybe they weren’t crazy because after they said that, it pulled them even closer.
Intern’s eyes fluttered, under any other circumstance they would be to scared to trust themselves to fall asleep like this. But they were far to tired to care, they let themselves fall asleep in the Bed Monsters arms.
“What in god’s name are you doing.”
Head Nurse sighed, she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t somewhat amused by this, never did she think she would witness something like this. Someone cuddling with a Anomaly.
Surprisingly the Bed Monster’s eyes were shut as well, Head Nurse considered trying to take Intern away, but if the monster woke up it was as good as over for them.
“Ah what the hell.” Head Nurse let out a dry chuckle, “fine, but if I get dragged underneath there I’m never letting them live this down.”
She went to go retrieve a bottle of Maple Syrup, twisting it open and slipping it into the Bed Monsters hands, replacing it with Intern as she slowly dragged him out.
She put her up on the bed in room 4. If a patient came in then she’d just move them. She leaned up against the wall, watching over the snoring Intern.
Intern slowly pried their own eyes open. They were on a hospital bed, and there was a strong maple syrup smell in the room, “did I black out?”
”Not sure if that’s what I’d call it.” Head Urse mumbled.
Intern glanced over at her, before realizing how sticky their sweater was.
Then they remembered.
Their face flushed as they remembered what they did before they fell asleep, their face got even redder when they realized Head Nurse found them like that.
”The Bed Monster must’ve caught me off guard.”
”And covered you in Maple syrup?”
Intern could feel their ears press against their ears in embarrassment.
”Look, lets keep this between the two of us ok?”
Head Nurse let out a tired sigh, “sure Intern… just no more improper used of Bed Monsters.”
Intern nodded, and Head Nurse walked out of the room, likely to go clean ip the mess they left. They sat there alone with their thoughts for a bit. They were covered in maple syrup, so they needed a new change of clothes. But one thought replayed quite a bit.
They HAD to try that again one day.
Bonus scene:
Secretary just finished up with every anomaly for the night, everyone was checked in, and her shift was finally over, she could finally head home.
”Good job,” Security pet her, normally she would protest against this but Intern vanished mid shift and she had to do everything herself, so she supposed she could indulge in it just this once.
Every undulation felt like it was easing off a bit of stress, and if Security was close enough, she would probably fall onto her shoulder.
Security’s petting stopped abruptly, “what in the…”
”Why did you stop?” Secretary turned and noticed Intern finally came back, but there something off.
”why are you covered in Maple syrup…”
”Had a accident, nothing to serious.”
Normally she would push her questioning, but she was just far to tired by now. And she kind of wanted security to start up again.
”Whatever, my shifts over, you can take over.”
Secretary walked past them, ready to finally leave. Before noticing Head Nurse mopping up some Maple syrup, “you need help?”
Head Nurse glanced up, “nah its alright. You just go on home.”
Secretary yawned, it seemed like a nice plan. She walked out of the hospital, looking back once, but she swore she could see something staring at the Intern over the corner, something tall and scrawny, just staring.
She squinted her eyes but as she tried to focus on it, it slipped away.
”….I need to go to bed.” She muttered, turning to walk home.
