Work Text:
Stood around a bonfire in the middle of the city was a humanoid. Her hood covering her head, gray eyes watching the flames dance around. It had been a while since she'd attended any kind of celebration, and the last time she wasn't alone.
Zoe pushed past the feelings that welled up in her chest and began to grow a lump in her throat. Not an easy feat as she could still feel the warm hand clasped with her own. The half elf's head resting easy on her own shoulder. Her head leaned slightly as though to rest on that of the one in her memory.
She hadn't wanted to walk away from Kaelen. Hadn't wanted to hurt her. Somehow miraculously Zoe had mangaged to hide the tears until after their conversation. If it meant Kaelen living, then it was worth it. She told herself this anytime the pain attempted to resurface.
So long as Kaelen was safe, the pain was worth it. At least to her…not that Kaelen knew any of this. She never would've let Zoe walk away if she had. Breaking up and telling her she didn't lover her anymore was the hardest thing Zoe had ever done, and with every day she became more certain nothing that would come would even come close to hurting more. But Kaelen was safe. Zoe was doing her job. And that's just the way it needed to be.
