Can I be-

Summary:

His Good Friend had collapsed onto the floor, one hand clutched desperately around his throat, saltwater spilling from his mouth in great choking gulps. Tears streamed down his face. His hand groped blindly across the table in front of him.

Braun caught the man's wrist before he could strike the bright red button.

Work Text:

That day, he felt it.

The brief, gentle brush of his future Good Friend's hand against the base of his head. The damp, foreign sensation left upon his body.

And, of course, the unfamiliar feelings blooming somewhere deep inside him.

Mr. Roe Deer was certainly an intelligent human. Perhaps the most devoted-and by far the most entertaining-contestant his Tuesday program had welcomed since those masked humans began arriving at the studio in droves. Insightful. Expressive. And, above all else... Made for the camera.

He had brought back a certain flavor the Host had thought lost after so many episodes.

He trembled. He hesitated. He smiled. Even when the spotlight wasn't on him, he continued performing. But the Host was a professional.

First and foremost, he had merely felt a tiny spark of satisfaction at how wonderfully today's recording was unfolding.

At last,am a contestant truly devoted to the show.

 But after that touch...

 Those feelings became

 Unfami liar.

Having that human so close... Whispering. Speaking so quietly. His hands trembling —something he would have never permitted anyone else to do— felt positively nice.

 Pleasant.

When Mr. Roe Deer asked for a break, he almost wanted to seize him by the hand and escort him to the lounge himself.

But oh, that would have been terribly unprofessional.

So he didn't. Instead, he politely asked one of the staff members to guide Mr. Roe Deer there before retreating to his dressing room. To touch up his makeup.

 And

 Check-

 What is-

 He looked into the mirror.

Right where the little human's fingers had brushed against him two tiny smiling yellow stickers clung to his face. Still damp. Still strangely cool.

He ran a gloved fingertip across their raised surface.

Then copied the little artificial smile onto his own screen. A perfect match.

 Hmm.

He toyed with the edge of one until a tiny corner peeled away.

Had he been human, he probably would have shivered. Instead-

 Static.

 Oh.

 What an interesting sensation.

He peeled it back just a little more.

The sound of his own frequency echoed through his mind.

Almost instantly, his feelings toward the human shifted, rippled. Negative.

 Negative.

He held the sticker delicately between his fingertips.

What a fascinating little thing. It was still slightly sticky. More importantly; it remained perfectly intact.

He thought about Mr. Roe Deer again.

He certainly didn't feel quite as... Friendly.

He carefully tucked the little sticker away.

 Then reached up once more.

The second one was still there.

 Tiny. Yet utterly fascinating.

/Good Friend

That day he noticed them.

Those bothersome former coworkers of his Good Friend.

After months of persistence, he finally had him here, in his studio. His sweet little roe deer.

The man had arrived on the verge of tears, but in the end, he simply couldn't resist Braun's marvelous commercial. Nor his kind. Warm. Friendly words of comfort.

At last, the man was free; free from that dreadful office that haunted every night with nightmares and fear. Only to torment him again throughout the day with even more fear. Even more pain.

Braun had rescued him, just as any Good Friend would.

And now they worked together, side by side, and the show was breaking ratings!

His little Good Friend truly was remarkable.

 Mine.

My little star.

Without all those troubles weighing down his poor little head, his Good Friend had finally become fulfilled. Happy.

Working in the same place meant they could see one another all the time. Every day. For the rest of their lives.

And without that dull little plush body standing between them...

They could finally enjoy the physical contact his Good Friend seemed to crave so dearly.

 Now they could hold hands.

Braun could rest a palm against Soleum's back, feel the delightful shiver that ran through his increasingly less human Good Friend.

He could wrap an arm around his waist.

 He could-

They could do so many wonderful things together.

But those idiots just had to appear on the one day his Good Friend had —Finally! —accepted his offer to stand beside him onstage.

And, of course, his kind, naive, thoughtful, well-meaning Good Friend recognized them despite all of Braun's efforts to make him   forget.

And, of course, he looked back at Braun with those bright eyes, timid, hopeful, asking whether he could go greet his former colleagues.

 Oh sweet friend.

[Of course, Friend! It's your break, after all. Feel free to chat with them!]

 Braun wasn't foolish.

His Friend, poor thing, was susceptible. Easily influenced. Mentally  frail.

And those fools had not come merely to say hello.

 They wanted Soleum.

MINE

 His gaze never left them.

He watched as his Good Friend walked over.

     He watched them exchange pleasantries.

He watched one of them attempt to hand his Good Friend something. A familiar candy wrapper caught the nearby studio lights.

 His show.

 His studio.

His domain.

 H    w        r e     t h      .
    o        d a             e y

How dare they.

Fortunately his Good Friend refused it.

 [Come along, Friend!]

 Braun shortened the commercial break.

The very thought of his precious co-host lingering any longer with those creatures was unbearable.

They pretended to leave, but Braun knew better.

So once filming ended he never let his Good Friend out of his sight.

[Did you enjoy catching up with your former coworkers, Friend?]

"...! Yes. It was nice seeing them again after so long."

[I see... I'm terribly curious. What delightful conversation did you have?]

"Ah, they were just checking whether I'd been eating properly."

[❗]

He had completely forgotten to feed his Good Friend!

He'd become so absorbed in finally having his Friend beside him that he'd overlooked one of those tiny little human necessities.

A small but honest mistake that anyone could have made.

To make up for it, he would prepare every exquisite delicacy the studio had to offer! Only the finest for his Good Friend!

So he went to find him.

Although "find" was rather a strong word to use when going directly to where Soleum was. After all, this was his studio.

 [ - ]

 That wretched candy.

 He made it disappear immediately.

Where.

 "Um, where's the candy?"

[Mr. Roe Deer, surely your first meal in an entire month wasn't going to be a stale, dusty old sweet? That would be an insult to gastronomy itself!]

He had seen it. Seen his Good Friend refuse that ridiculous thing.

[Since you didn't submit a meal request, Mr. Roe Deer, I took the liberty of selecting tonight's menu myself.]

 Then how...

[Once you've finished eating, you'll feel completely revitalized.]

 Oh! Right!

He snapped his fingers. A bottle of wine appeared upon the table.

[An exceptional vintage. It seemed only fitting to uncork it in celebration of your successful debut, my Friend...]

"...Did you match the vintage to the guest's production year?"

 So observant.

 And so innocent.

[Ah! I do appreciate an observant audience! That's exactly right!]

He poured one glass for his Friend, then another for himself.

[Now then... Shall we have a toast?]

His Good Friend extended a hand.

The sleeve of the exquisite custom-tailored suit Braun had gifted him slid back ever so slightly.

  Ah.

 That tattoo.

He allowed his Friend to eat in peace. He could hear that brilliant little mind working. With every bite his thoughts tangled themselves into increasingly intricate knots.

Little thing.

Only then did Braun realize he enjoyed watching his Friend eat. He should have fed him sooner. They ought to share meals together more often.

Braun himself had no need for food, but watching his Friend place tiny pieces of human nourishment into his mouth...

Watching them slide down his throat...

 Watching him digest...

 [ - ]

It almost made Braun want to devour his Good Friend instead.

"Braun, could you give me back the candy you took earlier?"

[Hm?]

"I've eaten now, so I thought I might have a little dessert."

 Hmmm.

[Oh... I see. Very well.]

Naturally, he wasn't about to return something so utterly ordinary.

Instead he produced another candy that looked almost identical. He trusted that his Good friend wouldn't notice.

Perhaps he would have before joining the program, but now? Not a chance.

His mind had learned to prioritize what truly mattered. The show. The guests. Braun himself. Respectable priorities, properly arranged.

He'd been working on that with his Good Friend ever since that day in the train restroom.

"Braun. No matter how I look at it... We need to talk about this."

[Hmm?]

"My employment contract. Shouldn't we discuss things like vacation time... and my salary?"

[Oh, Mr. Soleum.]

What a peculiar concern. Of course Braun was a responsible employer! Every single member of his staff received fair wages. Excellent benefits. Ample time to rest between recordings.

Whether they actually used those benefits... Well. That was another matter entirely.

Every employee on his program was wholeheartedly devoted to the show. Happily choosing to spend their days off working.

      working

   working

[Naturally, every member of my production team is guaranteed generous compensation and more than enough free time. I must admit, though, I'm rather puzzled. What exactly were you told on your first day?]

Watching the brief expression of panic cross his Friend's face would never cease to amusing. Once, he was afraid of him. Now, he was afraid of the possibility of disappointing him.

 How adorable.

"I'm sorry. Even so, I'd still like to properly negotiate my working conditions."

[But of course, Mr. Roe Deer!]

Braun presented him with a contract —a very generous one— prepared especially for his Good Friend.

[Then let us finalize everything by the end of the week!]

 "Got it."

[Then you'll officially become an employee of the program.]     Forever. Until the very end of your days.

Beside me.

[Ah! That reminds me- While hosting today's live broadcast, I was suddenly struck by a marvelous idea!]

 "...?"

[That's actually why I came to your dressing room in the first place. But then I saw you breaking a month-long fast with a piece of candy. I was so utterly shocked that I completely lost my train of thought! Good heavens!]

"Heh... um. I'm sorry. So... what was your idea?"

[Your tattoos, Mr. Roe Deer.]

His gloved fingers brushed gently across the smudged makeup covering his Friend's wrist, leaving a faint streak of foundation on the fabric.

[It must be terribly inconvenient having to cover them every single time you appear on the show. And knowing you, Mr. Roe Deer... You'd much rather spend your break working than sitting still while someone reapplies your makeup. So, with that in mind...]

He could feel the hesitation blooming inside his Friend.

[Why not simply erase them altogether?]

More and more doubt filled his co-host's mind.

[Just think about it. It'll save you time. It'll free you from unnecessary burdens...]

 "Wait a second."

['Wait a second?' Ha! Is something troubling you]

"These tattoos have been useful in a lot of situations."

That damn inventory.

[Haha! Oh, come now! That was only because you were trapped in that-] -that dreadful office that never appreciated their precious Mr. Roe Deer. [-joyless, underpaid job!]

[But now, Mr. Soleum, you're part of this splendid talk show! Wherever you go, people will treat you well. Come now... Let's wash away those messy little scribbles.]

Why was his Friend still resisting?

WHY IS HE SO DIFFICULT

"I still think I could have fun using them."

 ...

Braun decided to take a little look.

His Friend's thoughts were simple, clear. A striking contrast to the tangled knot of misery they had been while working for those dreadful humans.

And every single thought was pleasant. Braun liked them.

 Using that inventory...

To help the program. How thoughtful. How dedicated. How wonderfully helpful his Good Friend had become.

[In that case, I'll look for alternatives. I'll find something that produces the same effect.]

 Braun felt genuinely touched.

It was exactly what he wanted.

[Now you're even interested in magic tricks! That passion is truly moving! Haha!]

Every day was a wonderful day with his Good Friend by his side.

[🥰]

 Pure happiness.

 Contentment.

He returned to his own dressing room, allowing his precious co-host to rest.

His fingers idly traced the edge of the single sticker he'd allowed himself to keep.

 Czzzzzzz

  Pzzt

Oh what a delightful little thing. Even though its effect had become almost nonexistent —now that all his affection and goodwill already belonged to his Good Friend —his body still remembered the sensation it had caused during those first few days...

 What beautiful memories.

Months had passed since he and Mr. Roe Deer first met. The day that human changed something deep inside Braun. Something that had nearly extinguished him with a single touch.

Months since he answered the call of the Good Friend Ritual. The invitation. And that strangely familiar human standing beyond it.

Months since he had accepted remaining beside Kim Soleum until the human's life came to an end, or If Braun had his way —and he certainly would —far, far longer than that.

Months filled with countless adventures together.

 Delicious memories.

FEARRRRRRRRRRRR

Braun cleared his own mind of his Good Friend's cries for help.

 He was hurt.

 Deeply hurt.

After everything he had done for him.

After all the wonderful adventures they had shared!

After inviting him onto his glorious program and letting him work beside him practically from the very second he'd stepped into the studio!

"I just want to go home." The stubborn little thing trembled where he stood. Still trying to meet Braun's screen. Or as much as anyone could through blurred, tear-filled eyes.

HOW DARE YOU

Kim Soleum had been the one who literally started this relationship first.

And now he wanted to leave ?

SELFISH

Kim Soleum, with his talent for entertainment, his lively mind, and those damned little stickers-

[❗] AH.

   RIGHT.

Ha~

Braun seized Soleum's face. One hand was more than enough.

  Slowly...

     Carefully...

With his free hand, he peeled away the sticker that had remained with him for months.

Betrayal. The first emotion to flood through him.

He watched the human's face go pale.

 Annoyance came next.

The trembling of that tiny body pleased him.

PityWrathWrathWrathWrathWrath. Pity Wrath Wrath Wrath Wrath Wrath.

...Then, with surprising gentleness, he pressed the sticker against Soleum's cheek.

The tears stopped. The human gasped, his cheeks trapped within the marvelous Host's hand.

"Braun, you-" Don't call me that. We aren't friends. "please."

HOME.

 What is a home?

Such a tiny little word to carry so much weight.

  Homes burn.

  They are abandoned.

  They are forgotten.

  People change cities.

  Names.

  Lives.

  Nothing lasts.

  Except him.

  He waited patiently.

  He opened the door again.

  And again.

He saved a place that no one else would ever fill.

He built a refuge with his own hands. His program. And he had allowed —No. Begged —Mr. Roe to enter it.

Yet he still kept trying to run away.

As though Braun had always been the  problem.

No matter how much of himself he offered, some people would never stop searching for the exit.

Why can't I be your home?

He dragged his     Good Friend     through doors, hallways, storage rooms, rooms rooms rooms

His desk. Frozen in time. The tiny sticker he'd kept, still just a little damp.

Kim Soleum stared at it. Confused. "...Braun, don't—"

Just as Soleum had once done to him, Braun gently pressed it down, slightly overlapping the first, just a little crooked.
