Chapter Text
The Fourth Great Ninja War had turned the earth itself into a graveyard.
Smoke rolled endlessly across the shattered plains. Forests burned in the distance, reduced to black skeletons clawing at a blood-red sky. Craters split the battlefield apart like scars across flesh, and thousands of shinobi stood shoulder to shoulder behind the Allied Shinobi Forces’ final defensive line.
No one spoke anymore.
Not after what they had seen.
Not after Madara Uchiha descended upon the battlefield like a living catastrophe.
Naruto stood at the center of the frontline, Sage Mode flickering around him in unstable waves. His jacket was torn. Dirt and blood stained his face. Every breath felt heavy now.
Beside him stood Killer Bee, Kakashi, Gaara, Tsunade, and countless exhausted shinobi who had already fought beyond their limits.
And ahead of them—
Madara.
Calm.
Untouched.
Almost bored.
His Eternal Mangekyō eyes swept across the alliance with cold amusement.
“You still resist,” Madara said quietly. “Even after despair has shown itself so clearly.”
No one answered.
The pressure radiating from him was unbearable.
Then Madara’s gaze settled on Naruto.
“And yet,” he continued, “your spirit remains annoyingly intact.”
Naruto clenched his fists.
“I’m never giving up.”
Madara’s expression barely changed.
“But people break, Naruto Uzumaki. Even jinchūriki.”
His hands moved suddenly.
A familiar sequence of seals.
Tsunade’s eyes narrowed instantly.
“No…”
Kakashi stiffened beside Naruto.
“That jutsu…”
The ground trembled.
A summoning coffin burst upward from the earth with a violent explosion of dust and shattered stone.
Then another.
And another.
The battlefield grew silent.
Every shinobi stared.
Madara folded his arms.
“Let us test the strength of your resolve.”
The center coffin creaked open slowly.
Naruto frowned through the smoke.
A silhouette stood motionless inside.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
White hair.
Tattered red markings.
Then the figure stepped forward into the light.
Naruto’s eyes widened.
His heartbeat stopped.
“…Ero Sennin…?”
The battlefield froze.
Even the wind seemed to die.
Tsunade staggered backward as if struck.
No one breathed.
Standing before the Allied Forces was Jiraiya of the Sannin.
His skin carried the pale cracks of Edo Tensei. His eyes were duller than they once were. But it was unmistakably him.
The legendary Toad Sage.
Naruto’s master.
Dead for a year.
Naruto’s lips trembled.
“No…”
Jiraiya slowly lifted his head.
His expression was strangely calm.
Then his eyes met Naruto’s.
And for a single horrible second—
Naruto forgot this was war.
Forgot Madara.
Forgot everything.
All he saw was the man who had taught him how to believe in himself.
The man who had laughed with him.
Trained him.
Protected him.
The man whose death still haunted his dreams.
“Yo,” Jiraiya said softly.
Naruto’s knees nearly gave out.
Behind him, Tsunade stared in complete disbelief.
Her breathing became uneven.
It wasn’t possible.
She had watched too many people die.
Dan.
Nawaki.
Countless comrades.
But this—
This was different.
Because no matter how many months passed…
Some part of her had never truly accepted Jiraiya’s death.
And now he stood there again.
Close enough to touch.
Close enough to hear.
Close enough to lose all over again.
Her chest tightened painfully.
Jiraiya looked older than she remembered somehow. More tired.
But the sight of him shattered decades of walls she had built around herself.
Memories flooded her mind without mercy.
Jiraiya grinning stupidly outside her office window.
Jiraiya drunkenly promising to protect her.
Jiraiya leaving the village one final time.
The last conversation they ever had.
The last smile.
The last chance she never took.
Her fists shook violently.
“Damn you…” she whispered at Madara.
Madara merely observed.
“Yes,” he said. “Pain is most effective when it wears a familiar face.”
Naruto stepped forward slowly.
“You… you’re really…”
Jiraiya’s expression changed.
For a moment, sadness flickered across his face.
“I’m sorry, kid.”
Naruto’s throat tightened.
That voice.
Exactly the same.
Madara smirked faintly.
“Even now, he worries for you.”
Tsunade suddenly shouted—
“Get out of his head!”
Everyone turned.
Her voice cracked with fury.
And grief.
Tsunade glared at Madara with murderous hatred.
“You desecrate the dead just to toy with people?!”
Madara looked unimpressed.
“The dead are merely tools. Nothing more.”
The chakra around Tsunade exploded violently.
The ground beneath her feet shattered.
But before she could move
Jiraiya spoke quietly.
“Tsunade.”
She froze instantly.
That voice.
God.
How many times had she wanted to hear it again?
Too many.
Far too many.
Slowly, she looked at him.
And suddenly she wasn’t the Fifth Hokage anymore.
Not the strongest kunoichi alive.
Not the legendary medical ninja.
Just a woman staring at someone she loved after believing she never would again.
Her eyes began to burn.
Jiraiya smiled faintly.
“You still look scary when you’re angry.”
A broken laugh escaped her before she could stop it.
Then tears suddenly filled her eyes.
And that terrified her more than the battlefield itself.
Because Tsunade Senju did not cry.
Not anymore.
Not after everything she had lost.
Yet merely hearing his voice again made years of buried feelings surge to the surface all at once.
Naruto looked between them in stunned silence.
And slowly…
He began to understand.
Not fully.
But enough.
Enough to see the pain in Tsunade’s eyes.
Enough to realize Jiraiya had left behind more than memories when he died.
Madara watched all of it carefully.
The despair.
The hesitation.
The emotional fracture spreading through the Allied Forces.
Exactly as intended.
Then he gave a single command.
“Kill them.”
Jiraiya’s body moved instantly.
Despite the horror on his face—
Despite the resistance in his eyes—
His body vanished in a blur toward Naruto.
“NARUTO!” Tsunade screamed.
The battlefield erupted.
