"Every Bleeding Edge (And the Warmth of Your Skin)"

Summary:

"You know what, Devon?" Chucky purred, his voice dropping into a dark, razor-sharp register. "I always loved ruining happy endings."

Or

Jake has a nightmare, and Devon does what he does best—keeps him grounded.

Notes:

Well.

This thing is what EXACTLY broke my writer block that I had since JANUARY!!

I've been a fan- like, OBSESSED level fan with the franchise since I was eight, I'm currently twenty-two 👀

I watched the seven movies over and over, but the series wasn't available in my country because, well... let's simply say: homophobia is a disease ♥️

BUT, the moment I found it somewhere, I immediately watched it, and currently half through season two (so my life span with the series is basically less than a week) but I'm SO in love and I WANTED to write something 🥹🥹

So here we are!

Now, enough of me talking, and go enjoy the read 🫶🏻✨️

Kudos and feedbacks are SO appreciated, especially feedback 🤍

Edit: well... I finished s3 a couple of days ago and... yknow what? I ain't sayin' nothing, I think the ending is a topic for therapy only 👁👄👁

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The dark did not just exist; it had weight.

It pressed against Jake’s chest like a physical hand, heavy and suffocating, squeezing the oxygen out of his lungs until his throat burned with the dry, desperate urge to gasp. He couldn’t. His body was entirely disconnected from his mind, a useless mass of flesh and bone pinned to an invisible floor.

There was no up. There was no down. There was only the vast, empty void stretching out infinitely in every direction, painted in shades of pitch-black and the dull, sticky crimson of his own blood.

Blood. He could smell it before he could see it. It was thick and metallic, filling his nose, coating the back of his tongue with a taste like rusted iron.

He tried to blink, but his eyelids felt like they were glued shut with sleep and dried tears. When he finally forced them open, his vision was a useless, blurred smear. He could make out the dark shape of his own legs stretched out in front of him, but they didn’t feel like his. They felt numbness-dead, like wooden limbs attached to a broken doll.

A cold shudder ran through him, though he couldn't even tell if his body was actually shaking or if it was just his mind vibrating with sheer terror.

He was hurting. God, he was hurting. Every single nerve ending in his torso was screaming, a dull, throbbing agony that flared into white-hot lightning every time he tried to draw a breath.

He wanted to reach down, to press his hands against whatever wound was spilling his life onto the floor, but his arms remained stubbornly locked at his sides. Paralyzed. Trapped in his own breaking shell.

Then, the silence of the void was punctured.

Skrrr. Skrrr. Skrrr.

The sound was slow, rhythmic, and instantly recognizable. It was the scraping of metal—heavy, sharpened, brutal metal—being dragged carelessly across the concrete.

Jake’s heart, the only part of him that still seemed to function, slammed against his ribs like a panicked bird in a wire cage.

No. No, please, not him. Not again.

From the hazy edges of his blurred vision, a figure materialized. It was small—barely reaching past a human’s knee—but its shadow stretched long and monstrous across the empty space. It walked with that distinct, slightly stiff, plastic-jointed stride, its little red sneakers making a soft, rhythmic patter against the ground.

Pat. Pat. Pat.

And then, the voice. It was too bright, too gleeful, dripping with a sickeningly familiar playground sadism.

"Aw, look at you, kiddo," Chucky chuckled, his voice echoing in the vast emptiness. He began to walk in slow, deliberate circles around Jake’s paralyzed body. "Look at the great artist. The big hero. Laid out like a piece of cheap canvas. Honestly, it’s almost poetic. If it weren't so pathetic."

Jake tried to turn his head, to track the doll, but his neck was frozen. He could only listen to the scraping of the butcher's knife circling him, drawing an invisible, deadly boundary around his dying body.

"You really thought you could outsmart me?" Chucky’s laugh was a harsh, rattling sound, the sound of gears and plastic clicking together behind synthetic vocal cords. "You? A kid who couldn't even stand up to his own abusive old man? Please. You’re a joke, Jakey. A bad punchline in a movie nobody wanted to watch."

The footsteps stopped right beside Jake’s head.

Jake held his breath, his eyes straining to the side. He could see the striped shirt, the faded denim overalls, the scarred, rubbery face with its manic, unblinking blue eyes.

Slowly, Chucky knelt. The smell of cheap plastic, synthetic hair, and old gunpowder washed over Jake, mixing with the metallic tang of blood.

Chucky reached out. His small, three-pronged plastic hand descended, resting against Jake’s cheek. The touch was horrifyingly gentle—almost tender, like a father comforting a sick child. The cold, lifeless vinyl of Chucky’s palm pressed into Jake's cold, sweaty skin.

A violent shockwave of revulsion tore through Jake's mind. His body reacted instinctively, jerking away in a frantic, desperate flinch.

But the sudden movement sent a spike of agony so intense through his abdomen that a choked gasp was ripped from his throat. The numbness shattered, replaced by a white-hot fire that made his vision go completely white for a terrifying second.

Chucky let out a delighted, high-pitched giggle, drawing his hand back and dusting off his overalls. "Oof. Touchy, touchy! See, that's your problem. You always gotta make things harder on yourself. You never did learn how to just take a hit."

The doll stood up, the butcher’s knife catching a sickening, non-existent light as he spun it effortlessly in his small grip.

"But hey," Chucky said, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial, wicked whisper. "I’m a giver. And I know how much you love sharing. So... let's bring out the co-star of this little tragedy, huh?"

Chucky turned, his red shoes clicking as he walked away from Jake.

Jake’s heart stopped. The panic, which had already been red-lining, spiked into a cold, paralyzing dread that made his stomach drop into a bottomless pit.

Devon.

As if summoned by his worst fears, the shadows at the edge of the void parted.

There he was. Devon.

He was sitting on the ground, bound, his usually neat clothes torn and stained with dark splinters of dried blood. His head was bowed, his dark curls messy and plastered to his forehead, but as Chucky approached, Devon slowly lifted his head.

His face was bruised, a nasty cut splitting his lip, but his eyes—those warm, deep brown eyes that Jake adored more than anything in the world—were wide and clear.

Chucky stopped right in front of him, letting the heavy blade of the butcher’s knife hover just inches from Devon’s throat.

“No,” Jake’s mind screamed. “No, no, no, take me, kill me, do whatever you want to me, but stay the fuck away from him!”

Jake fought with everything he had. He tried to force his muscles to contract, tried to dig his fingernails into the floor to drag himself forward. He wanted to scream, to yell Chucky’s name, to hurl insults, to do anything to draw the doll’s attention away from Devon.

But his body remained a useless, dead weight. His lips wouldn't part. His throat felt like it was filled with dry sand.

Devon’s eyes shifted. He didn’t look at Chucky, and he didn’t look at the lethal edge of the blade resting near his collarbone. He looked directly at Jake.

Even surrounded by the terrifying, suffocating dark of the void, with a serial killer doll hovering over him, Devon’s expression softened. A small, incredibly fragile smile touched his bruised lips.

He didn't cry out. He didn't beg.

Instead, Devon let out a soft, barely audible breath. His voice was a gentle, soothing murmur that carried perfectly through the empty space.

"It's okay," Devon whispered, his eyes shining with a profound, heartbreaking tenderness. "It's okay."

It's okay. How could he say that? How could he look at the knife, look at the blood, and tell him it was okay?

The sheer unfairness of it, the devastating beauty of Devon trying to comfort him while his own life hung by a thread, shattered something deep inside Jake’s chest.

He screamed. He threw every ounce of his remaining soul into forcing a sound out of his throat.

But the scream died instantly. Instead of a voice, a thick, hot rush of blood bubbled up into his throat, choking him. He gasped, coughing violently, the metallic liquid spilling over his lips and running down his chin. He was suffocating on his own fluids, his chest heaving uselessly as he watched through a haze of tears.

Chucky rolled his eyes, letting out a loud, theatrical sigh that echoed off the non-existent walls.

"Oh, barf," Chucky groaned, tossing his head back in disgust. "Are you fucking kidding me? 'It's okay'? What is this, a CW teen drama? You guys are so incredibly cheesy it’s making me want to throw up my stuffing."

He gripped the hilt of the butcher’s knife with both hands, his little plastic fingers tightening around the worn wood. He looked down at Devon, a malicious, ugly sneer twisting his rubber features.

"You know what, Devon?" Chucky purred, his voice dropping into a dark, razor-sharp register. "I always loved ruining happy endings."

He raised the knife.

The polished steel of the blade caught the light, gleaming with a blinding, terrifying brilliance.

Jake’s thoughts spiraled into a chaotic, screaming mess of pure, unadulterated guilt.

That’s it. It's happening again. The only good thing in my life is dead. My dad is dead. My aunt is dead. Gary is dead. Lexy is going to die. And now Devon... the love of my life, my anchor, the only reason I’m still breathing... he’s going to die right in front of me, and it’s all my fucking fault. It’s all my fault. I brought this monster into our lives. I couldn't protect them. I couldn't save him—

Chucky’s arms tensed.

The knife began its rapid, downward arc—

With a violent, lung-shattering gasp, Jake’s eyes flew open.

He bolted upright, his spine snapping straight as he tore himself out of the nightmare.

His chest was heaving, his ribs expanding and contracting in shallow, frantic pants that did nothing to satisfy his desperate need for oxygen. His bare chest, his skin was slick with a cold, greasy sweat that made the cool night air of the bedroom feel like ice against his flesh.

His hands were gripping the bedsheets so tightly his knuckles were stark white, his fingers trembling violently as if they were still trying to claw their way through the endless void.

His mind was still half-trapped in the dark. His vision was blurry, his eyes darting frantically around the room, expecting to see the striped shirt, to hear the scraping of metal, to smell the suffocating scent of fresh blood.

Where was he? Was he dead? Was Devon dead?

"Jake...?"

The voice was soft, thick with sleep, and infinitely gentle.

Jake flinched violently at the sound, a sharp gasp escaping his throat as his body coiled tight, ready to defend itself. He scrambled backward, his heels digging into the mattress as he tried to get away from the sound, his sense of direction completely warped by the lingering terror of the dream.

He went too far. The edge of the mattress vanished beneath him, and his balance tipped. He was falling—

Before he could hit the floor, a warm, solid hand shot out, wrapping securely around his trembling wrist.

"Whoa, whoa—I've got you. Jake, I've got you, baby. Hold on."

The grip was firm but incredibly gentle, pulling him back from the precipice of the bed.

Jake looked up, his eyes wide and wild, his breath coming in ragged, broken hitches.

Devon was sitting up, his dark curls messy from sleep, his eyes soft and filled with an immediate, deep concern. He was wearing an oversized t-shirt, his bare shoulders glowing softly in the dim, golden light of the streetlamp filtering through the window.

He was alive. He was whole. There was no blood on his shirt, no knife at his throat.

But Jake’s brain couldn't process the reality. The panic attack had its claws dug deep into his chest, squeezing his throat shut. He was shaking so hard his teeth clicked together, his eyes staring at Devon’s hand on his wrist as if he were looking at a ghost.

"D-Dev..." Jake choked out, the name breaking into a quiet, pathetic sob.

"Hey," Devon murmured, his voice dropping into a register so low and soothing it was almost a hum. He slowly slid closer, keeping his hands open and fully visible in the dim light, offering no sudden movements that could trigger another flinch. "Hey, look at me, Jake. It's me. You're okay. You're in our room. We're safe."

Devon moved his hand from Jake's wrist, letting his fingers slide down to entwine with Jake’s cold, trembling ones. He squeezed gently, then raised his free hand to hover just a fraction of an inch from Jake’s face, letting Jake feel the radiating heat of his palm before slowly resting it against his jawline.

The warmth of Devon's hand against his cold, sweat-dampened cheek was a shock to Jake's system. It was soft, alive, and so intensely real.

A broken, shuddering sob tore from Jake’s chest. He didn't say a word—he couldn't. His throat felt completely locked, his tongue heavy and useless, his mind absolutely refusing to put the lingering horrors of his dream into words.

He didn't want to think about Chucky. He didn't want to speak his name. He didn't want to breathe life into the nightmare by talking about it.

Instead, he just wanted Devon.

Understanding the silent plea in Jake's wide, tear-filled eyes, Devon didn't ask a single question. He didn't ask what the dream was about, he didn't press for details, and he didn't demand an explanation. He simply shifted closer, parting his legs slightly so Jake could collapse into his lap.

"Come here," Devon whispered, his voice thick with a profound, unconditional tenderness. "Just come here, baby. You don't have to say anything. I've got you."

Jake surrendered entirely. He let his upper body fall forward, burying his face directly into the crook of Devon’s neck. He wrapped his arms around Devon’s torso, his fingers desperately bunching the soft fabric of Devon’s oversized t-shirt, pulling himself so close that there was absolutely no space left between them.

Devon’s arms came around him instantly, locking him in a tight, protective embrace. He rested his chin on Jake’s shoulder, his hands immediately starting a slow, repetitive rhythm on Jake’s bare, shivering back.

One hand moved in long, grounding strokes down his spine, while the other slid up to cup the back of Jake's head, fingers gently threading through his sweat-damp curls.

"I'm right here," Devon murmured, his lips pressing gently against the side of Jake's neck, breathing the words directly onto his skin. "I've got you. Breathe with me, Jakey. Just focus on my chest. In and out."

Jake squeezed his eyes shut, his entire body trembling violently against Devon. He couldn't control the shuddering gasps that racked his frame, nor the tears that were now free-falling, soaking into the shoulder of Devon's shirt.

But he did exactly what Devon asked. He pressed his chest flat against Devon’s, focusing entirely on the solid, steady rise and fall of the other boy's lungs.

Devon's breathing was slow, deep, and deliberate, acting as a natural metronome for Jake's frantic, shallow pants.

Slowly, Devon began to sway them. It was a tiny, barely perceptible rocking motion, a gentle side-to-side swing that made the darkness of the bedroom feel like a safe, floating island rather than a suffocating void.

"You're safe," Devon whispered, his voice a low, rhythmic chant in the quiet room. "I'm right here. I'm holding you. Nobody is getting near us. I've got you so tight, J. Just let it go. You're okay."

Jake let out a long, shuddering gasp, his forehead pressing harder into the crook of Devon's neck. He let himself weep, the tears coming in quiet, exhausted waves.

He didn't have to explain the blood, the knife, or the terrifying sight of Devon dying. He just had to let the physical warmth of Devon’s body melt the icy terror away.

Devon’s hand in his hair was incredibly patient, gently detangling the damp curls, massage-tracing small circles on his scalp. Every few seconds, Devon would press a soft, lingering kiss to the side of Jake's head, or his temple, or his shoulder—wherever his lips could reach. They were soft, feather-light touches, reassuring Jake that he was completely surrounded by love and life.

As the minutes drifted by, the violent shaking began to subside into a faint, occasional tremor. Jake’s breathing gradually caught up to Devon's slow rhythm, the tight, iron bands around his chest slowly unraveling. He felt incredibly heavy, a profound, bone-deep exhaustion washing over him as the adrenaline finally left his system.

He let his hands loosen their desperate, white-knuckled grip on Devon’s shirt, his palms flattening against Devon’s back instead. He simply lay there, draped over Devon’s lap, his face still hidden in the warm crook of his neck, listening to the soft, steady hum of Devon's breathing.

"There we go," Devon whispered, his hand on Jake's back slowing down to a incredibly gentle, comforting rub. "You're doing so good, babe. Just breathe. I've got you."

Jake let out a tiny, wet, exhausted sigh. He shifted his head slightly, resting his cheek against Devon’s collarbone, his eyes half-closed as he stared at the dim golden light on the bedroom floor.

He still didn't want to talk, but he wanted to show Devon he was back. He slid his hand up, his fingers gently tracing the line of Devon’s shoulder blade, a soft, silent thank-you.

Devon felt the shift and let out a soft, sweet breath of his own. He leaned back slightly, just enough so he could look down at Jake’s face. He kept his hands cupped gently around Jake’s cheeks, his thumbs wiping away the damp paths of tears under his eyes.

"Hey," Devon murmured, his eyes infinitely soft as they scanned Jake's face.

Jake looked up, his eyelashes still wet, his bottom lip trembling slightly, but his eyes were clear. "Hey," he whispered back, his voice raw and quiet.

Devon didn't ask if he was okay. He didn't ask what happened. He just smiled—a small, incredibly warm, reassuring smile—and leaned down to press his lips gently to Jake’s.

The kiss was slow, soft, and sweet, completely devoid of any urgency. It was a gentle reassignment of reality, a physical reminder of who they were and where they were. Devon’s lips were warm and soft, parting slightly to deepen the touch just a fraction, pouring all his quiet devotion into the kiss.

Jake let his eyes flutter shut, his body completely relaxing as he melted into the touch, a tiny whine of comfort escaping his throat. He reached up, his fingers gently tangling in the soft curls at the back of Devon’s neck, holding him close.

When Devon finally pulled back, he didn't go far. He rested his forehead against Jake’s, their noses brushing, their warm breaths mixing in the cool air of the room.

"I've got you," Devon whispered again, his thumb gently caressing Jake’s cheekbone. "Always."

"Always," Jake breathed, his voice barely a murmur.

Devon shifted them gently, sliding down until he was lying flat on his back on the pillows, pulling Jake right along with him. Jake went willingly, letting himself be guided until he was draped over Devon's side. He rested his head on Devon’s chest, directly over his heart, while his arm wrapped securely around Devon’s waist.

Devon pulled the heavy, plush comforter over both of them, tucking it securely around Jake’s bare shoulders, creating a warm, sealed cocoon against the cool night.

Under Jake’s cheek, Devon’s heart beat with a steady, powerful rhythm.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

It was the most beautiful sound in the world. It completely drowned out any lingering echo of the nightmare.

Devon’s hand returned to Jake’s back, sliding under the comforter to trace slow, lazy patterns on his bare skin. His other hand stayed in Jake’s hair, gently twirling the curls, occasionally sliding down to stroke his ear or the back of his neck.

They lay there in complete, comfortable silence. There was no need for words, no need for explanations. The quiet rustle of the sheets and the rhythmic stroking of Devon’s fingers were the only dialogue they needed.

Jake let his eyes close, his body sinking into the mattress, completely anchored by Devon’s weight and warmth. He let himself drift, the steady beat of Devon’s heart lulling him back down into a deep, peaceful sleep, completely shielded from the dark.

The next morning, the room was bathed in a thick, lazy golden light.

The sun filtered through the windowpane, casting long, warm blocks of gold across the wooden floor and the messy sheets of the bed. The air was quiet, filled with the soft, peaceful hum of a morning that had absolutely nowhere to be.

Jake woke up slowly, his mind drifting lazily back to consciousness. There was no sudden startle, no panic, no lingering shadow of terror. He felt incredibly warm, wrapped in a comfortable heaviness that made him want to never move again.

He shifted his head slightly, realizing he was still in the exact same position. He was draped over Devon’s side, his face tucked into the soft space of Devon’s shoulder, his arm still wrapped tightly around his waist.

Devon was still asleep, but as Jake shifted, Devon’s arm tightened instinctively around Jake’s waist, pulling him even closer, a soft, sleepy grumble rising from his chest.

Jake couldn't help the soft smile that spread across his face. He lifted his head slightly, resting his chin on Devon's chest so he could look at him.

Devon looked beautiful in the morning light. The golden sun caught the warm undertones of his skin and illuminated the messy curls of his hair. His face was completely relaxed, his long eyelashes casting soft shadows on his cheeks, his lips parted slightly as he breathed in a slow, peaceful rhythm.

Jake stayed perfectly still, just watching him. He felt an overwhelming wave of tenderness wash over his chest, so thick and sweet it almost made him dizzy.

Slowly, carefully, Jake reached up. He brought his hand out from under the covers, his fingers hovering for a second before he gently, feather-lightly, touched Devon’s face.

He traced the soft curve of Devon’s jawline, his fingertips sliding over the smooth skin, feeling the steady warmth of him, his touch filled with an infinite, quiet adoration.

Devon stirred at the touch. His eyelashes fluttered, a soft, sleepy sigh escaping his lips. He blinked slowly, his eyes half-closed and hazy with sleep as they focused on Jake.

As soon as he recognized Jake’s face, those sleepy brown eyes softened, a lazy, incredibly sweet smile curving his lips.

"Hey," Devon mumbled, his voice deep, gravelly, and thick with sleep. He slid his hand up from Jake’s waist, his fingers gently tangling in the hair at the back of Jake's neck, pulling him down slightly.

"Hey," Jake whispered, his voice soft and airy.

Devon didn't say anything else. He just pulled Jake down, pressing a soft, sleepy kiss to his forehead, holding it there for a long, quiet moment. He smelled like vanilla, warm sheets, and the clean, comforting scent of home.

When he pulled back, Devon slid his face down, burying his nose into the side of Jake's neck, inhaling deeply as he hugged Jake closer, pressing a chast kiss to his pulse point.

He let out a contented hum, his body completely relaxing back into the mattress.

Jake let his eyes close, leaning into the embrace, his fingers gently tracing the line of Devon’s shoulder. "What time is it?" he mumbled softly.

"Doesn't matter," Devon murmured against his skin, his voice muffled and warm. "Not allowed to look at clocks today. Rules of the bed."

Jake let out a soft, genuine laugh, the vibration of it chest-to-chest with Devon. "Oh, yeah? Since when are those the rules?"

"Since right now," Devon mumbled, his grip tightening playfully around Jake's waist, pulling him up so they were completely aligned, side-by-side. Devon opened his eyes, looking directly into Jake’s with a look of pure, concentrated warmth. "We're not going anywhere. We're just staying right here. No Chucky, no drama, no nothing. Just us."

Jake’s heart swelled. He reached up, his hand cupping Devon’s jaw, his thumb gently smoothing over his cheek. "Just us," he repeated, the words tasting like a promise.

Devon smiled, leaning into the touch of Jake's hand. He leaned forward, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the corner of Jake's mouth, then another to his cheek, and then down his jawline. Each touch was deliberate, extremely sweet, and completely focused on making Jake feel adored and safe.

"You're so soft," Devon whispered, his lips brushing against Jake's jaw.

"That's your fault," Jake mumbled back, a light blush dusting his cheeks as he hid his face against Devon’s shoulder again.

Devon chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that Jake could feel directly against his chest. He wrapped his arms securely around Jake, pulling the comforter all the way up to their ears, completely sealing them away from the rest of the world.

Jake let out a long, happy sigh, his fingers lightly playing with the hem of Devon's shirt. The shadows of the past and the terrors of their lives were still out there, waiting beyond the bedroom door. But in this room, wrapped in the warm gold of the morning and the endless warmth of Devon’s arms, they were invincible.

They had each other, and for now, that was the only reality that mattered.
