The World Turned Upside Down

Summary:

When Alexander Hamilton transferred to Liberty high school, he wasn't expecting to make many friends. The plan was simple: keep his head down, get through the school year, and move on.

That plan fell apart as soon as he stepped through the front doors.

Notes:

This is my first fic. Honestly, don't expect this to be very good, I have no idea what I'm doing :') If you have any thoughts or advice, please leave a comment! <3 I will probably update once or twice a week.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: First Day

Chapter Text

Swarms of kids flooded the halls, pushing and weaving past one another in a rush to get by. Lockers slammed shut, voices overlapped, and students ran through the crowds like they already knew exactly where they were going. It was utter chaos.

There were more people in this one hallway than there had been on the entire island Alex used to live on before he moved here. That fact made Alex want to turn right back around and leave through the doors he just entered.

In fact, that's what he was just about to do before he was nearly shoved to the ground.

“Sorry.” The dark-skinned boy that ran into him muttered. When he looked up at Alex, he paused, a flash of confusion crossed his face. “Who are you?”

“My name is Alexander Hamilton.” Alex states, still a little shaken from nearly getting trampled.

“Aaron Burr” he says, holding out a hand. “Most people just call me Burr.”

Alex shook it.

“So,” Burr said, “are you new here?”

“Yeah,” Alex said. "Today's my first day.”

“Figured.” Burr nodded. “If you'd like, I can show you around?”

Alex flashes him a smile and nods.

“My first class is English.” He tells him.

“With Mr. Washington? Me too.” Burr informs him.

Alex responds with a nod and starts to follow Burr down the hallway. Who would have thought making friends would be this easy?

When they arrived at the classroom, Alex sat next to Burr. Mr. Washington walked into the room a couple seconds before the bell rang, and gazed around the room.

The students started shuffle to their seats and as soon as everyone was seated, Washington spoke up.

“Today we have a new student in our class, Alexander, would you like to introduce yourself?”

Alex froze. He took a deep breath.

“My name is Alexander Hamilton; I just moved to New York from the Caribbean.” He says quickly before sitting back down. Thankfully, no one seemed to really care, and Mr. Washington just thanked him and started the lesson. He just really hopes he doesn't have to do that in every class.

The class went by pretty quickly, and Alex tried his best to understand what was happening. Some essay about analyzing Shakespeare. He tried to take as many notes as he could before the end of class.

When the bell finally rang, he shoved his notebook in his bag and waited for Burr by the door.

When Burr finally finished packing his bag, Alex followed him to the hallway.

“Ok, your next class is biology, but I don’t have that one.” Burr explained as they weaved through crowds of people.

Alex couldn't help but frown.

When they stopped in front of a classroom Burr looked over at Alex.

“This is my class. biology is the third door down that hallway.” He said, gesturing somewhere behind Alex. “The cafeteria is at the end of the hall. Meet you there after class.” And he quickly disappeared into the room.

Alex sighed and tried his best to follow Burr’s directions.

_____

Biology went about the same as English; a bunch of stuff he barely understood

When the bell finally rang, Alex rushed out of the classroom. He was starting to understand why so many people ran through the halls.

When he reached the cafeteria at the end of the hallway, he glanced around for Burr. He finally saw him sitting at a table over in the corner.

Alex quickly got his lunch, which was pizza that looked (and probably tasted) like cardboard, and sat by him.

“Hey Burr! Who's your friend?” he said, dropping his tray down onto the table.

“This is Theodosia.” He said, smiling at the curly haired girl sitting on his other side. She gave him a warm smile and waved.
“You must be Alex!” She greeted warmly. “How's your first day so far?”

“Eh, a little confusing, but I'll survive.” I say, biting into my strangely stale pizza. I scowl as soon as the food enters my mouth.

Burr and Theodosia start talking about something, though Alex doesn't really pay attention. Instead, he couldn't help but listen in to the conversation across the table.

“Can't you believe they just kicked him off the debate team because he was ‘too aggressive’? That’s ridiculous! He was doing exactly what you're supposed to do in debate!” A curly haired kid said.

“Oui. That's- how you say… unjust. Rumor has it, they used that as an excuse to kick him off because he mentioned the scores being biased, which, for the record, they totally are.” Another kid said. He had a very strong French accent.

“Hey Burr! You’re on his team, what do you think?” A dark-skinned kid sitting next to the French one says.

Burr sighed and looked over to the three kids across the table

“I agree it's unfair. I just don't think picking a fight with the administration is going to fix it.”

“Or,” Alex said before he could stop himself. “If enough people spoke up, they would have to listen.” Everyone looked over at him. Even Burr.

Burr sighed and turned back around, continuing his conversation with Theodosia.

“See! That's what I’ve been saying!” The curly haired boy exclaimed. “I'm John Laurens” he said, then gave Alex the brightest smile he thinks he has ever seen.

“Je m'appelle Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette! Mais appelle-moi Lafayette.” The French kid says.

“Bonjour, je m’appelle Alexander Hamilton” I smile proudly.

“Tu parles français!?” He says, shocked.

“Oui.” Alex chuckles. The kid sitting next to Lafayette groans

“Now he will never speak English again.” He sighs sarcastically. “Hercules Mulligan” he introduces.

Alex just laughs, finishing up his awful pizza, if you can even call it that. Barely four hours into his first day at Liberty High, and he already made five friends. Maybe high school won't be that bad.
