Work Text:

“Okay Tango, stop trying to avoid it, it's your turn,” a random voice said from within the crowd. A dozen or so teenagers were all sitting around a campfire. No adults around, just some kids having fun without consequences.

Tango blushed hard at the sheer idea of joining the game, especially considering who he was sitting next to.

“It's not that hard, Tango. Just start off easy, do you prefer guys or gals?” A different voice asked. Tango was pretty sure it was Gem who said it, but he wasn't quite sure.

Tango brought one of his legs up to his chest resting it on his camp chair with him. He was already embarrassed without even answering. “I mean like, I don't really mind too much, but I guess right now it's guys. Or somewhere in between.” His eyes shifted to the person to his right, Grian, who was happily roasting a s'more while waiting for Tango to say more.

“Okay okay, what hair color do you like best then?” Tango could tell who asked that one, it was Scott. It was always easy to tell when it was Scott.

Tango was still looking at Grian when he asked. His eyes moved a little upwards before responding. “I don't know, I mean like, I guess I kinda like blonds- dirty blonds.” He quickly corrected, not wanting anyone to get the wrong idea about his preferences. Not like it was that big of a deal, it was just a game, right? Yeah yeah, just a game.

Tango was still staring at Grian, who thankfully was too focused on his marshmallow to notice the eyes. “Ayyy, dirty blond, I like your style.” Grian was definitely happy to hear their own hair color mentioned finally. “Okay, how about height, how tall would they be compared to you?” Grian looked away from the fire and towards tango, who instantly moved his head, trying to hide the growing pink on his cheeks and ears.

Neither Tango nor Grian were standing, but that didn't matter, he knew the difference by heart at this point. “Shorter, but not too much. Like their eyes are just below mine.” Tango clearly had a scene in his head as he added more. “I would love it if I could gaze down ever so slightly as we kiss. And if we are standing close, I would love it if they had to tilt their head up to meet my eyes, it would just be so cute.” Tango started to daydream a little too much before being pulled back into reality by embarrassment.

Tango notices a slight pink had been brushed across Grian's face, but it must have just been bad lighting from the fire of course. No other reason Grian would look a little pink right now.

“Okay, since you mentioned eyes, what color do you find the prettiest?” It was still hard to tell whose voice was whose, but Tango thought that question came from Bdubs.

“Oh, it's gotta be brown, but like the really really dark type. Like mini voids. I want to look into their eyes and see nothing and yet everything all at the same time.” Tango, once again, didn't even need to look at Grian to answer that one, he had stared into those eyes enough times to never forget.

Tango noticed Scott smirking, of course he would be the first to catch on. “Okay then, what type of clothing does your perfect type wear?” Scott clearly wanted to confirm his suspicion.

“Well, they could wear whatever, so long as they are comfortable. But I wouldn't mind if it was mostly red, you know how I am about the color red.” Tango glanced back at Grian, who was now fiddling with the sleeve of his red sweater, unable to make eye contact with Tango.

“Alright, how about freckles, would they have any?” Yeah Scott knew for sure who Tango was thinking of.

“I think a light dusting would be pretty.”

“How about jewelry, does this mysterious person wear any?” Gem had managed to catch on too it sounded like.

“Yeah, they would probably have their ears pierced, and they would probably enjoy wearing things like necklaces and bracelets.” Tango was getting scared he was getting a little too comfortable, after all, Grian was sitting right next to him. What if they decided to talk to him about it?

He looked back over one last time to see a small smile on Grian’s face as he fiddled with his earrings. A pair of random plastic gummy bears. Tango had a matching pair. He wondered if Grian remembered the day they got the earrings as vividly as he did. “No! My marshmallow!” Grian yelled. The sudden exclamation drew Tango back to reality. Grian stopped messing with his jewelry as he mourned the marshmallow he had just lost to the flames.

Tango couldn't help but giggle at Grian. He always loved his antics, and seeing Grian get all distressed over the loss of a Marshmallow was adorable to him. Plus it was nice to have the focus of the crowd shifted off of him for a second.

“Gah, never mind,” Grian whined. “Tango, you done with your turn? I kinda wanna go.” Tango could tell there was a scheme lying beneath those words, but he didn't mind. A part of him thought it would be better to be told like this that he wasn't what Grian was looking for.

“Yeah sure, go ahead.”

Grian was looking directly at Tango when he started to talk. “Alright, he would have strawberry blond hair, like just a hint of red.”

Tango got a little more red at that. But there was no way Grian was thinking of him, there were definitely other people Grian knew who had strawberry blond hair.

“He's slightly taller than me, but not too much. He has the most beautiful hazel, or maybe amber, eyes you would have ever seen.” Grian was still looking right at Tango, the fire reflecting off of his dark eyes.

Tango couldn't help but remember the time Grian said that they loved his eyes and the way they looked like fire hidden in amber. It didn't feel all that romantic at the time, but now Tango had to wonder.

“I also like red a lot, so if he were to wear red, I wouldn't be able to stop staring,” Grian said as he continued to gaze at Tango, not letting his eyes move away for even a moment. Everyone knew Tango was always wearing red, and today was no exception.

Tango was blushing way more than he should have at this point, but he didn't want to assume anything.

“He would like jewelry, I think we would even wear some matching stuff like earrings.” Tango tried to reach up to his own ears discreetly to check if he had the matching earrings on, he of course did.

“Okay you two, just get a room at this point,” Gem said jokingly before eagerly starting her turn.

Tango was an embarrassed mess. Grian wouldn't stop looking at him like that. Like he wanted to sit closer than close, like all those comments were actually about him, like he wanted Gem to be right.

Maybe Tango staring back gave Grian the wrong idea, or maybe it was the right one, but he scooted a little closer, forgetting all about his desire for a s'more. Grian's chair was now touching Tango's, but he didn't mind one bit.

They spent the next while listening to people describe their perfect match, some in more detail than others. After a few turns had passed by, Grian moved his hand closer to Tango's until they were touching.

They grabbed onto Tango, but lightly, not wanting to over step. Tango was warmer than the fire could have ever made him, but he held back onto Grian not saying anything.

The both of them sat hand in hand until the night was over and people began to head home. Neither mentioned it that night, but it paved the way for a more than hopefully future.
