Work Text:
When I first met you,
I didn’t exactly like you,
You seemed to be just another cog in the world’s worst machine.
But slowly,
Ever so slowly,
I grew to trust you,
And you grew to trust me.
Scary things were less scary with you,
Little things were enjoyable,
Life was so much better.
But of course,
I ruined it.
As I always did,
The stupid way I always do.
I expected you to yell,
Cry,
Be angry,
Do something,
But you didn’t.
You smiled,
Hugged me and told me it would be ok.
You uttered those simple words,
A small phrase,
But it meant so much.
“Baby steps” was all you said.
My life,
Your life,
A complex dance.
But in the end,
You would have killed for mine,
So I sacrificed mine for yours.
You cried,
Begged me please not to,
But I did.
And it was worth everything.
You got away,
And that’s all that mattered
