Work Text:
In the quiet hum of the library, Cale Henituse sat cross-legged on the ancient rug, his nose buried in a tome as thick as his torso. The scent of old parchment and beeswax candles permeated the air, a symphony of history whispering from the pages. His fingers, stained with the ink of countless hours of study, traced the lines of text, each symbol a puzzle piece clicking into place.
"What are you reading this time?" A familiar voice echoed through the vast room, followed by the soft thud of boots on wooden floorboards. It was Eldrid, the librarian, a man with a face like a barkless oak and eyes that held the wisdom of centuries.
Cale glanced up, his lips curving into a smile. "The Records of Creation, Volume Three," he replied, tapping the cover gently. "It's fascinating, Eldrid. It speaks of the first World Tree, how it shaped our world, gave birth to our magic..."
Eldrid raised an eyebrow, his spectacles glinting in the candlelight. "Indeed? And what has drawn you to that particular volume today, I wonder?" His tone was neutral, but Cale could hear the undertone of curiosity.
Cale hesitated, then confessed, "I was looking for something... different. Something that might explain why I can use so many Ancient Powers." He leaned back, his gaze drifting towards the vibrant tapestries that adorned the library walls, depicting scenes of the world's creation. "It's been two years since I discovered my abilities. Two years of study, of pushing my limits. And yet, I still don't understand why."
Eldrid's expression softened. He walked over to Cale, his footsteps echoing in the sudden silence. He placed a hand on Cale's shoulder, his grip strong and warm. "Patience, Cale. Knowledge is a river, not a well. It cannot be rushed." He gestured to the books surrounding them. "But perhaps today, you have found a spring. A source that will guide you further upstream."
Cale nodded, turning his attention back to the book. He resumed his reading, his eyes scanning the yellowed pages, his mind racing with questions. Hours passed like minutes, the world outside fading into insignificance.
His eyes widened as he reached a particular section, the text blurring before him as he reread the words, disbelieving. He looked up, his heart pounding in his chest, his breath coming in short gasps. "Eldrid... this can't be right. The Henituse bloodline... it says it's not native to this world."
Eldrid turned from his desk, his eyes narrowing as he took in Cale's pale face, his wide eyes. "What do you mean, Cale?" His voice was calm, soothing, but Cale could hear the tension underlying it.
Cale swallowed hard, his tongue darting out to wet his lips. "It says... it says that thousands of years ago, our ancestors crossed over from another world. A world that was dying." He paused, his mind racing. "And that's why I can use so many Ancient Powers. Because we're not... we're not from here."
The library was silent, the usual hum of activity stilled. Even the candle flames seemed to hold their breath, waiting for Eldrid's response. He moved slowly, deliberately, his eyes never leaving Cale's face. He reached out, his hand steady as he took the book from Cale, his fingers brushing against the page that held the impossible revelation.
He scanned the text, his eyebrows furrowed, his mouth a thin line. When he looked up, his eyes were filled with a mix of surprise, understanding, and something else. Something Cale couldn't quite read. "It seems, Cale, that you have indeed found a spring. A source that will change the course of your journey."
Cale looked at Eldrid, his mind a whirlwind of questions, fears, and hopes. He opened his mouth to speak, to ask, to beg for answers, but Eldrid held up a hand, silencing him.
"This is not knowledge to be shared lightly, Cale," he said, his voice low. "You must tread carefully now. The world is not ready to know that the Henituse family isn't the original. And neither are you."
Cale nodded, his throat tight. He understood the weight of Eldrid's words, the danger they carried. He looked back at the book, at the page that had changed everything. He felt a shiver run down his spine, a mix of fear and anticipation. He knew this was just the beginning. The beginning of a new journey, a new search for truth. And he was ready.

The world outside the library was a stark contrast to the quiet contemplation within. The sun was high in the sky, its rays beating down on the cobblestone streets of the capital, casting everything in a golden glow. Cale walked briskly, his cloak billowing behind him, his mind preoccupied.
He had left the library with a single purpose - to find the World Tree. If what the Records said was true, if his family wasn't from this world, then perhaps the World Tree would have answers. It had accepted him, treated him differently, as Eldrid had pointed out. Maybe it knew more than it let on.
The city bustled around him, its inhabitants going about their daily lives, unaware of the revelation that had rocked Cale's world. He was almost grateful for their ignorance, their ability to carry on despite the weight of knowledge. It was a reminder that life went on, even when secrets were uncovered.
He reached the palace gates, his heart pounding in his chest. The guards looked up as he approached, their spears glinting in the sunlight. They recognized him, nodded him through, their faces impassive. He walked through the familiar halls, his footsteps echoing in the silence. The palace was empty, everyone busy with the day's duties. It was almost eerie, the usually bustling palace silent and still.
He stepped out into the courtyard, his breath catching in his throat as he saw it - the World Tree. Its massive trunk stretched towards the sky, its branches wide and welcoming. Its leaves rustled softly in the breeze, their color shifting and changing like a spectrum of emotions. He walked towards it, his steps quickening as he felt its power pulsing beneath his feet.
He reached out, his fingers brushing against the rough bark. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, feeling the tree's power coursing through him. He concentrated, letting his mind wander, let it explore the tree's vast expanse.
Suddenly, he was somewhere else. A place of strange, colored sky and foreigners' faces. He could hear their language, a symphony of sounds that echoed in his mind, a conversation that he could almost understand. He saw a battle, the familiar faces of his ancestors, their eyes filled with determination and fear. He saw a portal, a swirling mass of light and color, and then darkness.
He jerked back, his eyes flying open. He stumbled back, his heart pounding in his chest, his breath coming in short gasps. He could still hear the echo of that foreign language, still see the faces of his ancestors. He knew, without a doubt, that he had seen the truth.

Cale was shaken from his thoughts by the sound of heavy footsteps approaching. He looked up to see a group of Hunters striding towards him, their cloaks black and red against the golden sunlight. Their eyes were fixed on him, their expressions cold and calculating.
"Cale Henituse," the leader said, his voice low and steady. "We've been looking for you."
Cale's stomach twisted, a sense of unease washing over him. He had encountered Hunters before, but this time felt different. This time, they seemed... hungry.
"Why?" Cale asked, his voice steady despite the turmoil within him. "What do you want with me?"
The leader paused, his eyes narrowing as he studied Cale. "We have... information. About your family. About you." He hesitated, then asked, "Do you know who you are, Cale Henituse? Really know?"
Cale felt a chill run down his spine. He knew what they were talking about. The Records, the revelation, the World Tree's vision. They knew about his ancestry.
He took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew he had to tread carefully now, had to keep his cards close to his chest. He was playing a dangerous game, one that could cost him his life.
"I am Cale Henituse," he said, his voice steady. "And I am just as much a part of this world as you are."
The leader's eyes flashed, a gleam of satisfaction in their depths. "Indeed, you are," he said, his voice a low rumble. "And that's why we need you."
Cale's mind raced as he tried to process the Hunter's words. They wanted him, but not for the usual reasons. Not for his power, or his influence. They wanted him because they knew the truth. And they needed him, for reasons he couldn't fathom.
"Let's talk, Cale," the leader said, gesturing towards the palace. "We have much to discuss."
Cale nodded, his mind made up. He would go with them, hear them out. He would find out what they knew, what they wanted. But he would be careful. He would keep his secret close, his guard up. Because in this game of truth and power, the only person he could trust was himself.

The meeting room was dark, the dim candles casting long shadows on the walls. The Hunters sat around the table, their faces obscured by the flickering light. Cale sat at the head, his eyes scanning the faces around him, his mind alert.
The leader began, his voice low and steady. "We know about your ancestors, Cale. We know that they came from another world. We know that they brought their magic with them, their ancient powers. And we know that you possess those powers."
Cale nodded, his heart pounding in his chest. They knew. They knew everything.
"What do you want with me?" he asked, his voice steady despite his nerves.
The leader leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. "We have a problem, Cale. A problem that only you can solve."
He paused, his gaze unwavering as he studied Cale. "Our world is dying. The World Tree is fading, its magic waning. We are losing our powers, our abilities. And we believe... we believe that you can save us."
Cale stared at the leader, disbelieving. "Save you? How?"
The leader leaned forward, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Your ancestors, Cale. They came from a dying world. And they saved it. They found a way to give it new life. And we believe that you can do the same here."
Cale's mind raced as he tried to process the leader's words. He remembered the vision, the battle, the portal. He remembered the echoes of a foreign language, the faces of his ancestors. He remembered the Records, the revelation that had rocked his world.
He looked at the Hunters, at their expectant faces, their hopeful eyes. He knew what they were asking, what they were gambling on. And he knew that he couldn't let them down.
"I will help you," he said, his voice steady. "I will find a way to save our world. But in return... in return, I want the truth. I want to know about my ancestors, about our world. I want to know everything."
The leader smiled, a slow, satisfied smile. "Very well, Cale. We have a deal."
As the Hunters filed out of the room, Cale was left alone with his thoughts. He had taken the first step on a new journey, a journey that would lead him to the truth about his ancestors, about his world. And he was ready. He was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, ready to fight for his world, for his family's legacy.
Because he knew now, without a doubt, that the Henituse family wasn't the original. They were something more. Something greater. And he would make sure that their legacy lived on.
