Work Text:
It was a warm Sunday morning, not the warm that was mostly cold, but it was the one that was mostly hot. Yamaguchi, a college student had a bunch of work to do in his apartment, but because of the hit weather, he was getting distracted. Yamaguchi wanted something sweet and cold that he could eat to bring him back into focusing on his work, because most of them were due the next day.
He decided to go get ice cream, just at the small ice cream shop next the his apartment building. Tadashi grabbed a few coins, hoping that it'd be enough for him to be able to buy ice cream. As he was walking towards the ice cream shop, he notices the long line of people. Yamaguchi knew that there were many people in line, but he stayed went behind the last person in line, deciding to wait patiently.
Minutes have passed, and the line wasn't moving, Yamaguchi was suspecting that someone in line was complaining about some stupid wrong order ice cream. So, he decided to turn back, and that's when he accidentally bumped into a tall man. The man had blond hair, had glasses with rectangular frames, and white headphones.
Yamaguchi started sweating from fear as he had bumped into the guy, but as he looked up, he knew that face looked familiar to him, but he couldn't process. The blond guy just looked down at him, staying silent but obviously annoyed, judging from his expression. Yamaguchi bowed down then apologized sincerely, but instead of hearing the blond guy accepting the apology, Yamaguchi hears something else.
"Yamaguchi? Is that you?" The blond man asked calmly, but also in a curious tone. Tadashi stayed frozen in a bowing position for a few seconds before looking back up, as he looked back up, he realised it was his childhood bestfriend he hasn't seen since high school standing in front of him. "Tsukishima?" Yamaguchi asked, still processing the moment.
"It really is you." Tsukishima says with no emotion, while taking off his headphones. "Tsukki? Long time no see!" Yamaguchi cheered in a low volume. Tsukishima smiled softly at the sigh of Yamaguchi happy. He hasn't seen his best friend for quite a while now, so he was also as excited as him.
"There has to be a lot of catching up to do." Tsukishima followed after Yamaguchi's sentence. "There definitely has to be! Let's get out of line first." Tadashi says while stepping out of line as Tsukishima followed him slowly. They both walked out of the ice cream shop, they didn't know where they wanted to go, but they knew they wanted to catch up on each other's lives.
"So, which college do you go to?" Tsukishima asks, completely into the concept of catching up. "Oh, I'm just a scholar for Miyagi School of Arts." Yamaguchi answers immediately, he was still so obviously happy but Tsukishima didn't care. "How about you?" Yamaguchi turned Tsukishima's question back at him. "Oh, I go to the same college as you, how come I don't see you there?" Tsukishima answers, following a question.
"Maybe we don't have the same schedule, plus, the school is also pretty big, but I still can't believe we meet each other again!" Yamaguchi responded. Tsukishima sighs, he knew Yamaguchi was always cheerful, but he wasn't used to seeing him like this considering the fact it's been pretty long since they've seen each other. Tsukishima stayed silent for a few seconds, then Yamaguchi breaks the silence.
"Oh, Tsukki, I've got to go now. I still have some work to be done." Tadashi says in a disappointed tone. As he was about to walk back to his apartment, Tsukishima called out his name. Yamaguchi slowly turned his head back at Tsukishima's direction. "What is it, Tsukki?" Yamaguchi asks, raising one eyebrow. "If you want, I could help you out with your work." Tsukishima offers. Yamaguchi smiles softly, then nods, Tsukishima then followed him back to the apartment.
As they arrived back at Yamaguchi's apartment, it was kind of messy. Papers were everywhere, clothes, towels, and blankets were scattered everywhere in the living room. Tadashi looked at Tsukishima behind him and apologized for the mess, Tsukishima just accepted it, but still couldn't help but think about why it was very messy.
Tsukishima followed Yamaguchi into his bedroom that was quite cleaner than the living room. Tadashi took a stool from his living room then brang it inside for Tsukishima to sit on while he helps him with the work that needs to be done.
Tsukishima started explaining the lesson that Tadashi was having a hard time going through, as he finishes explaining, Yamaguchi compliments him like he did way back high school. "Still smart as ever, Tsukki!" Yamaguchi cheered and complimented. Tsukishima just rolled his eyes and looked at the opposite direction from where Yamaguchi was.
He felt his cheeks getting hotter, he was surprisingly flustered by Yamaguchi's compliment, maybe he forgot the feeling of being complimented by his best friend after years
of not seeing each other. That was the reason on why he just brushed it off. As Yamaguchi was writing, Tsukishima couldn't help but stare it Yamaguchi. It was like he was mesmerized by something in him, again, maybe it was just because they haven't seen each other in a very long time.
As Yamaguchi was finished with what he was writing, he caught Tsukishima staring at his face. "Tsukki? Is there anything wrong? Is there something on my face?" Yamaguchi asked, concerned while touching his face, feeling for anything on it. Tsukishima notices that Yamaguchi was already finished, he shook his head slowly then continued to teach Yamaguchi.
After a few hours, it was getting quite dark. Yamaguchi still had a bunch of work to do, so Tsukishima still had to stay to help Yamaguchi out with everything. As Yamaguchi was near finishing, he was getting sleepy, and unaware, he doze off. Luckily, he fell asleep after he had finished writing the last sentence.
Tsukishima noticed that Yamaguchi was silent for way too long, but as he looked at him, Yamaguchi was already asleep. His arms were already on the table, supporting his head. Tsukishima couldn't help but to stare again, after a few seconds, he stopped staring and decided to grab a blanket from Yamaguchi's bed which was right next to him. He covered Yamaguchi's body with the blanket, then left right after.
As he left Yamaguchi's apartment, he had already remembered and memorized Yamaguchi's location.
The next morning, Yamaguchi woke up on his desk, his head the opposite direction from where he was facing from last night. He sat up and saw the blanket around him, he was processing and trying to remember what had happened the other night. As soon as he remembered, his eyes widen as his lips form a circle. He remembered that Tsukishima was with him the other day to help him, and now he's not by his side. He panicked, maybe Tsukishima would be mad that he fell asleep instead of listening.
While he was thinking about everything that could've happened, he heard a knock on his door. Yamaguchi quickly got up then opened the door, it was Tsukishima. "Just woke up?" Tsukishima asks immediately after seeing Yamaguchi's messy green hair and the same outfit he wore yesterday, a long sleeved, yellow shirt with matching pants. Tsukishima was carrying two cups of coffee, one on each hand, he handed the other one to Yamaguchi.
After he gave it to Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi bowed down again, apologizing for falling asleep the other day. Tsukishima was stunned by this, but he still accepted it, not knowing why Yamaguchi had to apologize. "Why are you here?" Yamaguchi questioned after apologizing. "I just wanted to drink coffee with you." Tsukishima replied immediately. Yamaguchi accepted and let him sit on his couch.
"About the work I helped you with yesterday, do you want me to come with you and submit it?" Tsukishima asks. "Sure!" Yamaguchi responds immediately. After drinking the cup of coffee, Yamaguchi told Tsukishima to wait for him as he was still gonna shower, Tsukishima agreed and just stayed on the couch, scanning the room. It was still as messy as yesterday, but it didn't matter.
After a few minutes passed, Yamaguchi finally came out of his room and was dressed up for the day. Tsukishima stared at his face and hair, mesmerized by his hair when it looks wet, still perfect as always. Yamaguchi notices Tsukishima's gaze over him. "Tsukki? Is something bothering you?" Yamaguchi asks with a concerned face. Tsukishima was startled, though it was not really that obvious. He shook his head slightly then got up and signaled Yamaguchi to follow him.
Later, after Tadashi had submitted his work, both him and Tsukishima were getting hungry. Luckily, there was a came near their school gate, so they immediately went there. They both sat across each other, Yamaguchi was on his phone while Tsukishima was listening to music.
Few minutes passed and their food has been served, they both ate, but Tsukishima barely ate. As Yamaguchi was chewing on his food like a child, he looked at Tsukishima, seeing his food untouched. "Tsukki? Are you not gonna eat?" Yamaguchi asked, looking quite concerned. "No, and your face is messy, its bothering me." Tsukishima answers immediately after Tadashi had asked. As Yamaguchi was about to wipe off the mess on his face using his jacket sleeve, Tsukishima stops him.
"Hey, don't use your sleeve, use a tissue. It's so unhygienic." Tsukishima demanded, pretending not to care about Yamaguchi, but he obviously did. Yamaguchi listened immediately as usual, then used to tissue to wipe off the mess. Tsukishima stared at him as he was wiping his face for a few seconds, then he glances away as Yamaguchi had nearly caught him staring again. Tadashi then threw the tissue into a nearby trash can then they both got going.
As they were walking back, Yamaguchi notices Kageyama and Hinata nearby, also walking with each other. Tsukishima was curious and what Yamaguchi was staring at, so he at what direction Yamaguchi was staring it, and he saw the two boys he used to be bullying way back high school. Yamaguchi runs towards them without warning Tsukishima, but Tsukishima followed after him slowly as he ran across the road. "Woah, surprised seeing you guys together without arguing." Tadashi says jokingly, but the 2 boys weren't focused on Yamaguchi, they were focused on the boy behind them, Tsukishima.
"Long time no see, you guys still look stupid as ever." Tsukishima says with a smirk on his face, obviously teasing the 2 boys. "Yamaguchi, why is there a stray dog following after you?" Hinata asks jokingly, trying to get back at Tsukishima. Yamaguchi looked behind him to see Tsukishima standing up straight with an annoyed expression. "Tsukki, calm down, he's just joking." Yamaguchi says while holding Tsukishima's wrist. Surprisingly, Tsukishima stayed calm and just put his headphones back on. "He really is a stray dog, you're treating him like one, Yamaguchi." Kageyama says while obviously smiling.
Tsukishima pretended not to hear anything but he was so obviously pissed. "Let's get going, Yamaguchi." He says while grabbing Tadashi's wrist slowly, walking him away from the 2 boys. "They've been acting like boyfriends since high school, why aren't they together yet." Hinata whispers to Kageyama as the 2 other boys were walking away, Kageyama laughs and continues walking with Hinata.
"Tsukki, why did you do that? Now they're gonna be mad at me." Yamaguchi states in a calm tone. Tsukishima ignores him and continues walking staying silent. Yamaguchi was feeling quite embarrassed, so he just followed along Tsukishima staying silent.
"You know Tsukki, since you cant hear me, it's been a while since we've seen each other.. And I want you to know I kind of missed you throughout the years of not seeing you. Everyday I wondered whether if I would ever see you again, but now I guess the universe made us bump into each other again. Well, what I'm trying to say here is, I love you." Yamaguchi states as Tsukishima was not listening. Unexpectedly, Tsukishima's eyes widened, he paused and stood completely still.
Yamaguchi was quite shocked as Tsukishima just suddenly paused. "Say that again." Tsukishima's voice came out in a demanding tone, turns out that he actually heard everything. His music was on a low volume, and Yamaguchi was unaware of that. "Y-you heard me?" Tadashi says completely nervous as his cheeks were turning red from embarrassment, Tsukishima turns his head behind him to see Tadashi frozen completely.
"Do I have to repeat myself?" Tsukishima followed, his voice more demanding and serious, he was just trying still scare Yamaguchi, trying to get a reaction from him. "Tsukki, I-I meant it platonically, I promi-" Yamaguchi was suddenly cut off. Tsukishima captured Yamaguchi's lips in a kiss, Yamaguchi was completely stunned as Tsukishima grabbed his hands and held them tightly. Tsukishima was aware that they were kissing on some random hallway in the building, but it didn't matter.
After a few seconds, Tsukishima pulls away. "W-what was that for... What did that mean.. What-" Yamaguchi was scramming, he was overthinking while he was turning red from being kissed and also being embarrassed. "It meant I love you." Tsukishima says calmly while still holding Yamaguchi's hands. Yamaguchi just stared at Tsukishima while sweat was streaming down the sides of his head, he didn't understand, everything was happening too fast. Tsukishima let go of one of his hands, and kept the other one in his. They both walked away from the area as if nothing happened, but that moment was something special to them both.
