Chapter 1: I'll always be your friend

Chapter Text

Vee stood against a wall next to Dyle’s shop in the gardenview lobby, their microphone tail flicking from side to side every once in a while as her tall blocky figure stood idly.

It was around evening to dusk and light shone through the window as the sun set, just spilling up to Vee’s feet, Gardenview was closed for today and she was pretty much exhausted. Performing for hundreds of children is no easy task, but luckily, since they were the star of the show, she was always up to date on the latest drama in Gardenview.

Vee was great friends with Astro so he was texting her as much as they could, she had recently been hearing non-stop about the situationship between Dandy and Astro, and their falling out.

Such a shame, but it happens.

Sprout Seedly came strolling in through the garden gates and skipped up along toward the green computer, chipper.

“Heya Vee!”

He swayed from side to side.

“Whats the haps today?” He prompted them, as much as Sprout would hate to admit it, he was a fiend for gossip. (of course not the nasty kind!) He just couldn’t help it! Sprout always wanted to hear what was going on around Gardenview.

“Did you hear that Finn’s gold tooth fell in the lake and he had to ask Shrimpo to get it out?”

“Did you hear about how Scraps tripped whilst holding an open jar of paint and spilled all over the freshly mopped floors?”

“Did you hear about how Glisten thought he left his diary at the bus station and ran in making a big deal of it, only for it to be at home?”

Oh he just couldn’t get enough of it! So of course Vee had to pour over all the juicy details from the this week.

-

“Dang” Sprout looked a little taken aback from the news.

“Well, that’s real sad to hear…I hope they can make up sometime soon!” Of course Sprout never wanted his friends to feel down, he just wants everyone to get along!

“Yeah uhm.” Vee tapped their finger on the chin of their screen for a moment.

“Astro told me he pretty much never wants to talk to Dandy again.”

“I’m sure he was just being dramatic, but I’m gonna have to tell you not to play matchmaker right now. They both probably just need some time apart.”

“Pfft, yeah because spending time apart is definitely gonna help people make up right? Sprout sassed Vee.

“Like you would know anything about relationships.” Vee shot back playfully.

“You two could be in a band together or something, Sprout the socially inept and Cosmo the codependent.”

“Alright, don’t bring Cosmo into this.” Sprouts demeanour changed.

“Hah! Look at you! You just bring the guy up in a conversation and Sprout’s just gotta step in.” Vee mocked him lightheartedly.

Sprout looked away, rather embarrrased with himself.

Vee wiped a non-existant tear from her eye.

“Sigh… I wonder whats going to happen when you and Cosmo eventually get into a fight…”

“What!?” He jumped.

“Vee!” Sprout lightly whacked her on the arm. “Don’t joke about that kinda stuff!”

Vee backed off a bit. “I’m not joking.”

“How are you gonna handle yourself when this stuff eventually happens?”

“No friendship goes without a little breakups here and there. Its normal!”

Sprout might have damn well dropped to his knees and yelled at the top of his lungs.

“Hah! Yeah right. No offense Vee, but you’re kindaa rude…” Sprout teased.

“Me and Cosmo are just tight like that you know? You wouldn’t get it because of that! You just don’t understand our bond bro. You get into fights with your friends because of your rudeness, me and Cosmo don’t do that because we like eachother soooo much. And we’ll never get into fights with eachother because we aren’t rude to eachother!”

Sprout said whistfully and dreamily with his hands clasped together, swaying his hips and batting his eyes.

“…”

“Gay…” Vee mumbled under her screen.

“HEY I HEARD THAT!” Sprout shoved her on the shoulder.”

-

They stood around for around a minute and some change while having a good laugh. The sun eventually began to set, Vee walked off, Sprout was still standing there.

He stood up against the wall and thought about Cosmo for a couple of moments.

“Will me in Cosmo eventually get into a fight one day?”

“What if we do!”

“What if it gets really nasty!”

“What if we never recover…!”

“What if I accidentally say something that’ll make him hate me for the rest of his LIFE!”

Sprout comically held his hands up to his head whilst sweating.

Oh man oh man oh man! He bit his nails as his eyes darted from side to side.

“I gotta talk to Cosmo about this!” Sprout thought to himself.

--

Cosmo had just gotten off of work, acting in a commercial for cereal, how lovely! The pastry huffed as he slumped out of the bus, striding over to the entrance of Gardenview.

He swung open the door, his eyes focused on the yellow bench stationed near the large oak tree in the lobby where he would sit, read and unwind for a while.

On his way toward it, a tall and slim figure interrupted, waving his arms wildly.

“Cosmo!! ~ I neeed to talk with you right now!!!” Sprout whined.

“Uhm, alright!” Cosmo replied anxiously. “Is he mad at me?” Cosmo thought to himself as his chubby form fell back onto the yellow bench.

The cake-roll took a breath of relief, “Phew! My feet have just been absolutely aching from holdin’  poses all day!” He chuckled, trying to light Sprouts mood a bit.

Sprout fidgeted with his pink and white striped scarf, looking nervously at and away at Cosmo.

Cosmo drummed on his thighs, “Uh, what did…you want to talk to me about?” He nervously inquired.

“Oh..uh…uhm…” Sprout lost his voice a bit whilst thinking, realizing how he was overreacting.

“Ah just forget about it.” He flicked his wrist dismissively.

“Oh…are you sure?” Cosmo began to worry, Sprout seemed nervous about something.

“No really, you can tell me darlin. I swear I won’t say nothin!”

Sprout leaned back and closed his eyes, he leaned his shoulder onto Cosmo’s.

“I’m scared…” Sprout put his hand on his cheek.

Cosmo smiled sympathetically, “Awh, I know hon. The whole ichor operation that’s going on is real scary.” He said softly, Cosmo put his hand on Sprouts, trying to comfort him. “I-“

“Oh! Uh ah I-“ Sprout jumped up a bit, blushing profusely.

He quickly composed himself and leaned back into Cosmo again.

“Uh- uhm, no…”

“It’s not that...” Sprout chuckled bashfully.

Cosmo was a bit taken aback. “Oh!” He exclaimed, questioning.

Sprout stalled for a moment, pulling on his scarf.

“I’m scared that one day…we’re gonna get into a fight, and we’ll no longer be friends…”

Sprout folded instantly.

“I’m scared that one day you’re gonna leave me!!!”

Sprout fell onto Cosmo’s and yelled out almost comically in a crying voice.

“Ah!---

Pft!” Cosmo burst out into laughter.

“Oh my! Oh goodness gracious me!”  Cosmo yelped out while giggling loudly.

Sprout looked up at Cosmo with the wettest most pathetic puppy dog eyes.

The chocolate pastry cupped Sprouts face in his big hands.

“Oh Sprout.”

“You know dang well I’m not leaving you anytime soon yeah?”

“SOON?!?” Sprout yelled out dramatically. “It doesn’t matter if you’re not leaving soon! I don’t want you to leave me EVER!” He broke down onto Cosmos lap again.

Cosmo sighed airily and rubbed Sprouts head as he opened up his teal bag and pulled out a book. He set it on Sprouts head gently and began on a page.

Sprout got up, accidentally (or on purpose) making Cosmo lose his page. Cosmo took the hint and closed the book, sliding it back into his bag.

“Alright, what do you want from me Sprout.”

Sprout grasped onto Cosmo’s hands, turning himself so they would be looking eye to eye.

“I want you to promise me that you’ll never ever EVER stop being my friend okay?”

“Pinky promise!”

And pretty much instantly, Cosmo held out his finger to promise Sprout.

“I promise.”

Sprout sighed in relief.

“Thank you so much Cosmo, I really needed that.”

“Happy to help.” Cosmo giggled, settling his head on his hand.”

“D’aw, you’re too sweet.”

“How much do you like to help me on a scale of one to ten?” Sprout asked confidently.

“A whole lot.” Cosmo replied.

Sprout chuckled.

They sat in a comfortable silence for a while.

“But, what if you do leave me one day?” Sprout broke the silence sheepishly.

“Alright you’re startin’ to annoy me sweetie.” Cosmo teased.

“But what if!” Sprout asked again theatrically. “What if what if what if!”

“What if a plane suddenly crashed through the roof right now.” Cosmo teased again.

“Alright okay.” The cake-roll decided it was time to break out the big guns.

“Sprout Seedly, I swear on the year-old socks I wear every day and Ginger’s sugar cookie recipe that I love you, ok? I am not going to leave you, and I am going to keep being your friend for forever and ever, through thick and thin.”

Sprout was violently taken aback, his face immediately flushed redder than his strawberry skin and he hunched his back with how bashful he was.

“…”

Cosmo was taken aback as well. Oh my goodness Cosmo, you’ve really done it now huh? Just had to go and say too much.

“You really mean it?” Asked Sprout, happy as could be.

Cosmo was relieved. “Of course hon.”

“Cosmo, you’re like…the best ever. Thanks so much, really! You’re straight awesome sauce.”

Sprout straightened his posture and perked up dramatically, they sat next to eachother in comfortable silence yet again.

It was nice.

Cosmo was the bestest best friend a toon could ask for.

Best friend.

Best friend…

Sprout thought about it for a moment.

Come on dude, don’t be delusional. Cosmo treats everyone this way! He tells everyone he loves them, you’re being crazy.

He’s just trying to make me feel better, and plus,

I would only want the best for Cosmo, if he ever falls in love…I’m gonna make sure that they get together, and Cosmo is the happiest he can be…cause, if that’s not what loving someone’s about, I don’t know what it!

“…”

“Hey Cosmo…”

“What’s up?” The pastry said, buried in his book.

“I love you too dude.”

Cosmo smiled.

“I love you too.”

“Wait I said that first…”

“Bah!” Cosmo bonked himself on the head, Sprout giggled as he watched. His gaze softened.

The berry was happy with the comment, it was the kind of thing that would make him giggle and kick his feet, even though Sprout knew (thought) that Cosmo didn’t mean it in the way that he did…

..

..

Or did he?

Oh I'm sure they'll come around...
