Work Text:

Dave pulled the toothbrush from the holder, handing it to Joe-Joe before he retrieved his own. It was far later tonight than he would have liked to be up, but time had gotten away from them and all they could do was try to catch up in time to get a little sleep. Maybe it was a failed proposition, but he would at least try.

Joe-Joe echoed his yawn, and followed as Dave squeezed toothpaste out. Getting to bed was possible. Brushing their teeth was possible.

The toothbrush felt impossibly big in his mouth, too much to slide across his teeth, bristles whirring. But he did it anyways and it helped to see Joe-Joe doing the same by his side. Tasks like this were easier when he didn’t have to do them alone. The toothpaste tasted like the garden in the worst way possible, but when he rinsed it out of his mouth at the end, Dave did feel a little better.

Joe wasn’t quite done yet, so Dave leaned against the wall and waited for him to finish. His brush had stopped whirring, but he was still scrubbing a spot on a tooth. When Joe-Joe finally finished, he explained. “Found some veg.”

“Yeah,” Dave grinned. “Me too.”

Joe snorted. “It’s those eggs you made tonight.”

“Yeah, sure was. But we had to use up the food before it went bad, somehow.”

“Mhm. Didn’t keep the stuff out of our teeth.”

“Nope.” Dave shook his head. “You’re right.”

“Of course I am, Dav,” Joe-Joe told him. “But I think I will fall asleep right here if we don’t get moving.”

“Aye aye, cap’n.” Dave saluted him and pushed off from the wall, heading for their too small bed in the corner of the flat. Finally, he and Joe-Joe could sleep.
