Work Text:
Another night, another hour or two sprout is thinking of his best friend, Cosmo, in the weirdest ways. He never thought of cosmos body, voice, or cute little smile so much in his life. Rather, he never really thought of these things…at all. Sure, he’d think of Cosmo from time to time, but he’d never lose sleep over it…until a few nights ago. Something in him would just never stop buzzing, ringing, grasping his attention all the time. It was always yapping on and on about Cosmo, as if Cosmo could ever be his…”no…there’s no way…we’re FRIENDS…” he’d think to himself after every little hour or two in the night that little thing would chirp on and on, trying to force sprout out of his little loop of love and denial.
. . .
Cosmo is waiting for sprout to arrive at the restaurant. It’s their tradition to get pizza every Friday night, and to get tea every Monday morning. At this point Cosmo feels downright worried for his preciou-…best friend. He’s never been this late, or really been late at all. He’s worried that it’s his own fault. Oh god, has he been acting weird? Is it too noticeable that he has a crush on sprout the size of his own waist? There he goes again, tying everything he says or thinks to his weight. He knows that no one minds him, but that doesn’t change how he feels about himself. Sprout is such a vast difference from him. Sprout has a tall lean figure, charming demeanor, he isn’t weird and trans like Cosmo is, hot hair and style…he even looks better with a tail than Cosmo does. Of course, Cosmo is the only one thinking these things, the only one who compares himself to sprout in such ways. Finally, the star of the show in cosmos mind, Sprout, arrives—quite breathless. Unlike his thoughts, he doesn’t ask sprout if his being late is his fault, or if he looks bad compared to sprout. In fact, he tries to dodge the topic of his tardiness—or hotness—completely.
.
Vee wags her tail in annoyance. “When the hellis that bony strawberry just spill it?“ she wonders to herself. She and Shelly have had their own share of hard work and confusion while trying to pair up the two simps. Shelly is trying to take things slow, to ease Cosmo out of his insecurities and into his love. meanwhile, all Vee really wants is to get this out of the way swiftly and get sprout to finally understand he’s head over heels and it’s better to get it out of him. After all, Shelly had to bribe her to help with a special interview about paleontology to put on Vee’s show. Anyways, back to Vee, she finally confronts sprout about telling Cosmo. At this point, she doesn’t care about telling Shelly about this.
.
By now, Sprout feels pressured to do this. Not just by Vee, but mostly by that little tiny yapping, buzzing, screaming voice inside him, vying for attention. For action. But what if this action destroys Cosmos trust and comfort in Sprout? What if he never sees that gorgeous smile to its full extent again? Then again, what if he really ISN’T this into Cosmo after all? Maybe he’s just…on a hangover! A long hangover…!
.
This time, Cosmo is the late one to their date. You’d really think that Sprout would be the one who hates mornings, not to mention all his loss of sleep, but one thing sprout hates a LOT is being late. Besides, being early means seeing that cute little ass plop down on the picnic blanket. For some reason, that was just so satisfying to sprout…back to the scene, Cosmo arrives. They both know the other boy has been acting weird, but who are they to talk? They’ve been weird too. …it’s going to be a long week.
.
Shelly has been feeling worried for sprout and cosmo. Ever since she found out Vee has been pushing sprout more than they planned, they’ve been awkward and distant. She can’t help but wonder what would happen if she told one of them that their love isn’t one sided…
