Chapter 1: Letters

Chapter Text

Harry was sleeping peacefully in his and Dudley's room. Lux curled into his cat form next to him. The sun passed through the little gap between the curtains to dimly light the room. Dudley's bed was empty. He'd woken up at dawn again to wait for the Hogwarts letters as he had for the past two weeks. Harry was having a strange dream; he was chasing a girl's laughter in a field of flowers. Just so that she got farther and farther the nearer he got.

Then Dudley burst into the room and jumped on Harry's bed, waking both Harry and Lux up. Lux let out a tiny flame in surprise, which thankfully set fire to nothing. Harry groggily sat up and grabbed his glasses, which he put on.

"What ?" He muttered groggily.

"THE LETTERS ARE HERE, HARRY! THE LETTERS ARE HERE !!!!" He yelled, probably waking Hermione and Minerva up as well as the whole neighbourhood.

Harry got out of bed and followed Dudley to the living room where three owls were perched on the edge of a chair with letters in their grip. Hermione then arrived; half-asleep, she looked like she'd fallen out of bed. Minerva arrived then, looking a bit annoyed by the early wakening.

Dudley had already grabbed his letter and read it multiple times, stars of excitement in his eyes. Harry grabbed his and Hermione's and passed her her letter. They read it. Minerva watched them as Tofy poured her some tea.

"We'll have to go back to Diagon Alley ?" Hermione asked.

"Not you two," Minerva said, looking at Dudley and Hermione. "I'll order the books and equipment for the three of you by owl delivery. Harry will go buy his wand at Diagon Alley on his birthday."

"It's not fair, I wanted to see the latest broom! It'll be out next week !" Dudley protested.

"You should have thought of this before going alone to Diagon Alley, both of you," Minerva said with a strict look.

Dudley pouted and went to the dining room to have breakfast. They all followed him. Harry ate two toasts with eggs and looked as Dudley just stared at his plate, a bit upset.

"Come on, Dudley." Harry started. "Don't be so dep-"

Suddenly he had one of his blackouts. He could feel a feeling of longing coming from the other presence he'd learn to notice in his mind. Longing, maybe a bit of jealousy and a bit of amusement. He only saw red and brown and smelled the flowery scent, then right before he got out of his blackout, he heard a girl's voice.

"I'll come next year." The girl's voice said.

Then Harry gasped as he regained consciousness. Minerva was looking at him, worried. Hermione and Dudley looked rather confused, as they'd never seen Harry have a blackout before and were not part of the people who knew the reasons behind those blackouts, in opposition to Minerva.

"I need some air," Harry whispered, morphing into a raven and flying out the window across the sky.

He flew around the house, entered his room through the open window, and morphed back into human. He took Lux with him and went outside. He transformed Lux back into his dragon form; he'd grown a bit since the first time they'd met but was still quite small for a dragon, barely the size of a lion. Harry morphed into his dragon animagus form, and together they soared in the sky and flew in the clouds.

After an hour or two, they both landed in the forest near Minerva's house. Harry morphed back into his human form and transfigured Lux into a cat. They walked back to the house. Harry's hands in his pockets, Lux trying to cheer him up by speaking in parseltongue that now he knew his soulmate's voice. They walked into the house.

"What happened, Harry ?" Dudley asked. "Are you okay ?"

"I'm fine. Just needed some time alone." Harry said, smiling a little.

"Good, but you have to teach me how to become an animagus someday. You and Grandma both are, and I wanna be one too." Dudley said with a smile.

"Speaking of which, how can you have multiple animagus forms ?" Hermione asked, looking at Harry. "It's supposed to be only one."

"I'm a descendant of Merlin. He had multiple forms too. Who knows, it may be some kind of hereditary." Harry said, grabbing an orange and tossing it to Lux, who caught it in his mouth and started eating it.

Hermione decided to change the subject.

"What house do you think you'll be in, Harry? I think I'll either be in Ravenclaw or Gryffindor." Hermione said.

"Wouldn't surprise me if the sorting hat put you in Slytherin," Dudley muttered.

Hermione slapped the back of his head. "Shut up, Dudley"

"I think I'm okay with any house. I can play the 'descendant of every founder's' card if someone bothers me." Harry said.

"True," Dudley said, rubbing the back of his head where Hermione slapped him. "What house do you think I'll be in ?"

"Either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff," Harry answered.

An owl suddenly burst into the room and perched itself next to Harry. It carried a red envelope in its leg, a howler. A howler addressed to Harry. Dudley and Hermione both started laughing at the sight of Harry's livid face. He grabbed the howler and suddenly:

"HARRY POTTER! IT HAS BEEN OVER TWO WEEKS SINCE YOU LEFT AND I HAVEN'T RECEIVED A SINGLE LETTER WHEN YOU PROMISED TO SEND ONE! YOU BETTER SEND ME A LETTER THIS WEEK, OR I'LL COME IN PERSON AND DRAG YOU BACK TO PARIS BY THE EAR !" Fleur's voice boomed.

The letter then destroyed itself, and Harry immediately ran to his room to send a letter to Fleur. Dudley was dying of laughter, rolling onto the floor, and Hermione tried to contain hers better than he did.
