Living Your Dream

Summary:

Kara didn't know why the question made her freeze but she suddenly couldn't answer the last question that Cat Grant had for her.

Notes:

So I wrote this after listening to the first part of Colbie Caillat's song Living Your Dream and I thought it was a perfect question for Cat to ask at the end of the interview from the finale.
I have lots of other one shots like this that I will post as I'm finishing The Engagement. I also have a couple of other multi chapter fics I'm working on like finishing The Scientist that I posted the first chapter for and a soulmate fic called The Golden Halo.
Hope you enjoy this one and please keep bearing with me whilst I get all these stories finished and posted :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Living Your Dream

"So Kara." Cat Grant smiled at her. Kara could tell that she was really happy with how the interview had gone from how genuine her smile was. "One last question. You're National City's hero, devoted to your family, have incredible friends and, if I may say, you've landed your dream job. Are you living your dream?"

Kara opened her mouth to reply and froze.

Was she living her dream? Without a doubt she was finally ready to be who she was with no secrets but was that what made her happy?

What did make her happy?

Green eyes flashed into her mind. Teasing green eyes.

Her jaw dropped as the realisation hit her like a tonne of bricks.

Cat looked at her strangely before she asked. "Kara? Are you ok? That wasn't supposed to be a question that stumped you like this."

Kara had never been more grateful that Cat had decided to prerecord this interview to take away the stress of being live at least that is what she had told Kara.

Kara blinked and looked over at Lena who was now looking at her in concern as opposed to the look of pride that she had received all day.

"I need ..." Kara cleared her throat that had suddenly become dry. "I need a quick break."

Kara stood quickly as Cat protested, "Kara! We're nearly finished!" but this didn't stop her from walking towards the lift and pressing the up button several times and probably a little too hard but luckily she didn't break it.

She could hear Lena calling her name and by the time the doors had opened she had caught up with her and silently entered the lift with her. She pressed the button for the roof and the silence continued on the ride as Lena watched her in concern.

When they finally reached the roof she let the sunshine wash over her as she tried to make sense of how she was feeling.

"Are you living your dream?"

The question was innocent enough but she had suddenly realised what her dream actually was and no job could compare.

Lena, it seemed, had finally decided that Kara had been given enough time alone with her thoughts, "Kara, darling, what is it?"

Kara turned to face Lena and looked into her concerned green eyes.

"I ..." Kara started, "That question just threw me and made me realise something. I think I've been avoiding thinking how I feel about ... this thing and that question threw it into focus."

"What could possibly have thrown you that much?" Lena asked, her concern still shining through.

"You." Kara stated simply before she had time to over think it. She watched Lena's face change from shock to guarded optimism.

"Me?" She finally asked, wrapping her arms around herself.

"Well ... us." Kara clarified and stepped closer to Lena. "I never questioned it. Why I was so upset every time something went wrong between us. We were friends. But when Cat asked that I just ... tell me it's not just me ... Please." She begged.

There was silence again as Lena stared at Kara.

"I need you to tell me exactly what you mean." Lena finally said, "I need the words from you Kara, I ... I just ... I need to know."

Kara nodded and stepped right up to Lena and took both her hands in her own.

"That's fair after everything." She took a deep breath as she knew that she needed to be really clear with Lena and lay all her cards on the table. "Lena, I am so in love with you that I couldn't see what I felt for you. It's like one of those images that when you're close to it you can't make it out but when you step back slightly you can see the whole picture? I've been focusing on being your friend and I couldn't see how my feelings had changed because I was too close. I'm so in love with you that it's ridiculous. Lena, you are my dream."

During Kara's speech, Lena stared at her, like she couldn't believe what she was hearing. She opened her mouth to reply but the words caught in her throat. There were a few minutes of silence as they stared at each other. "You love me?" Lena finally asked, like she still couldn't quite believe what was happening.

Kara grinned and squeezed Lena's hands gently. "I really do."

Lena stared at Kara and as the silence stretched, Kara started to fear that this was one sided, that Lena didn't feel the same for her after all so she cleared her throat and took a half step back. This movement seemed to jolt Lena out of her thoughts and she let go of Kara's hands to throw her arms around her shoulders and the next thing Kara knew is that she had her arms full of Lena who was kissing her fiercely. Her mind took a second to catch up but when it did she kissed Lena back with the same intensity and moved one hand up Lena's back to tangle in her hair.

This kiss didn't last as long as either of them really wanted as Lena pulled away from Kara's lips but kept her arms wrapped tightly around Kara. "I love you too." Lena whispered against Kara's lips causing her to shiver at the feeling and the words Lena had said. "I thought I was imagining things."

"I'm sorry it took me so long to see." Kara replied.

They gazed at each other for another moment or so until Lena cleared her throat and unwillingly moved away from Kara who protested by keeping her arms locked around Lena's waist. "Darling, you have to finish your interview with Cat and I would rather not continue with this moment here but if you can wrap things up quickly then we can head back to mine and have all night to continue with this ... conversation." She raised her eyebrow in challenge.

Kara sighed dramatically and moved to let go of Lena but at the last minute she pulled her closer for a quick, soft kiss. "Ok ... let's go."

She threaded her fingers through Lena's and tugged her by her hand back towards the roof door and back towards the lift. They both seemed to let go at the same moment as the lift doors opened and they walked back to Cat Grant who was stood with her arms folded and her foot tapping in frustration.

"Kara! Where on Earth did you disappear to? That was the last question and we could have wrapped this up!" Cat asked as she looked between Kara and Lena, noting how close they were standing.

"I'm sorry Cat, I just needed a minute. Let's finish this!" Kara replied and she glanced at Lena who smiled encouragingly back.

They sat back down again and Cat sighed as she resumed the interview so they could edit out the time the last question was asked.

"So Kara. One last question. You're National City's hero, devoted to your family, have incredible friends and, if I may say, you've landed your dream job. Are you living your dream?" Cat asked, with a smile but the barest hint of a challenge in her eyes.

Kara smiled at Cat and glanced over at Lena who was looking back at her with a small smile on her face.

"I've never been asked that question before. I love my family and my friends and you're right with the fact that I've now landed my dream job. But none of that compares with the fact that I get to just be myself and go home with the most wonderful person I've met on multiple planets. Am I living my dream?" Here Kara paused and shared another look with Lena. "For the first time in my life, both here and on Krypton, I don't even have to think about the answer to that." She smiled brightly at Cat, "Yes, everyday."

Notes:

Let me know if you'd like to see more of this type of one shot or if the multi chapter stories are what you'd like me to focus on ... thanks all! :)
