— (Mizi POV) —
“Eheheh!! Sua, did I ever tell you about the time I tried to give till a piggyback?” Mizi giggles to herself, the sound irritating to her own ears. If only she could shut her mouth for once.
Sua seemed relaxed though, her eyes closed and a small, subtle smile on her face. There was something so angelic about the girl, always patient and understanding despite Mizi being, well, Mizi.
It was lunchtime at school and the two had decided to separate from the rest of the group to cloud watch. The weather was perfectly warm, and the sky an artificial blue. The sky was absent of clouds however. It was peaceful though, or atleast as peaceful as school can be. Plus she was lucky enough to be spending time with Sua!
“Mm.. no, I don’t think you have. Tell me about it.”
Sua says gently, her voice tentative, like how one might speak to a scared animal. Mizi wishes she could be more like that - someone genuinely kind, and not just a fake.
“Well!!!! I carried him on my back and ran around for a bit but I fell over and we went rolling down this hill so fast!!! We landed in a heap on the ground and you should’ve seen the look on his face!! He was all red like a tomato!!” Mizi yaps brightly, her enthusiasm being half real for once. She hopes that’s enough to earn a small laugh from the girl. She lives for Sua’s smile.
“…” Silence. Sua shifts uncomfortably. A barely noticeable shift of the eyes tells Mizi one thing clearly: she messed up.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
“Aha.. um, you okay, Sua?” She rambles, attempting to smooth things over. Some reassurance that she was ok would be enough.
“..yes” Sua mumble softly, shifting her head away. The air stills.
“You know you can always talk to me right? I promise I’ll listen! I never want to be the reason you’re upset!” Mizi rambles again, swallowing down her desperation. It’s her job to make people happy. To be the one who’s always optimistic. If she’s not, then what value does she have? She exists for this.
“I know.” Sua says quietly, visibly not okay.
“But I-“
Mizi bites her tongue.
Blood. Sweet and sharp, it floods her mouth. The metallic taste a reminder of her failure. It stings, spit intertwining by with the viscous fluid. Most importantly though, it hurts. It hurts enough for now.
“Mizi-“ Sua’s eyes widen slightly, quite a dramatic reaction for the stoic girl.
Mizi grits her teeth. She smiles.
A fake, bloodied smile. A mask slipping just slightly.
“Woops! Silly me! Anywho, what was that ship you were telling me about Sua? What was it called.. wanker or something?” She laughs, forcing normalcy. Sua didn’t deserve to deal with the messy parts of her. This is the side of her that the world preferred. (Surprisingly not a lot of people actually like Mizi. In contrast to Sua who’s too quiet, she’s too bright.) Her voice is unnaturally sweet.
“Haha.. it’s not called that, stupid.” Sua laughs softly. The air clears, and normalcy is resumed.
— (Sua POV) —
“Eheheh!! Sua, did I ever tell you about the time I tried to give Till a piggyback?” Mizis laugh is bright and sweet, like the sound of wind chimes on a spring morning. Her eyes twinkle, almost yellow in the sun.
Sua has infact heard this story many times, but the sound of Mizi’s laugh is too adorable to miss out on.
“Mm.. no. I don’t think you have. Tell me about it.” She says quietly, soaking up the comfort only mizi seemed to provide her. Mizis skin was warm and soft to the touch. It was a shame she covered up so much recently. Sua liked the feel of her skin under her fingers.
“Well!!!! I carried him on my back and ran around for a bit but I fell over and we went rolling down this hill so fast!!! We landed in a heap on the ground and you should’ve seen the look on his face!!”
Sua laughs along quietly, her darling was just so funny. It was like lying beside the sun. A steady light that Sua clinged to as if her petals were wilting. She wondered what life without Mizi would be like. The answer was not one she liked to dwell on.
*“He was all red like a tomato!”*
Ah. She forgot about Till’s crush on Mizi. Her Mizi. The thought of even having some competition was enough to make her undeniably pissed off. Mizi was simply too kind to understand though. She couldn’t see how Till was just a creep, like the rest of the guys who were interested in her. It was only Sua that truly understood her. So Till should just piss off and make out with his boy toy, Ivan, or whatever.
Alas, her thoughts must have shown on her face.
“Ah.. um, you okay, Sua?” Mizi says quickly, voice shaky and painfully naive. Her sweetheart shouldn’t have to know these awful things, about the awful people that too sought after her light. Sua will handle it.
“..yes” Sua replies blankly. Her perfect Mizi would surely understand. As long as they were together, Sua would always be okay.
“You know you can always talk to me right? I promise I’ll listen! I never want to be the reason you’re upset!” Mizi says softly, her tone slightly urgent. However, this wasn’t something Sua doubted. Mizi’s love her for was undeniable. The plethora of letters was more than enough proof.
“I know” Sua says finally. She didn’t tend to use too many words when delivering a point.
“But-“ Mizi cuts herself off by biting her tounge. The girl winces, as blood lines the edge of her lips. Red indents mark Mizi’s pink tongue.
Sua reels. Mizi’s perfect tongue scarred by such an ugly thing. Sua wonders if the crimson stuff would taste as sweet as Mizi acts.
“Mizi-“
Her illusion was shattering, and she watched with slight relief as Mizi immediately tried to replace it.
“Woops! Silly me! Anywho, what was that ship you were telling me about Sua? What was it called.. wanker or something?” Mizi’s smile was so precious. Even if it was forced.
“Haha.. it’s not called that, stupid.” Sua rewards Mizi with a laugh.
Mizi could be so silly at times!!
