Chasing Raccoons
The porcelain mask was cold against his face, the painted red markings doing little to conceal the heavy, suffocating weight of his reality.
Sasuke was back in Konoha. It was a fact that still felt like a jagged pill to swallow, both for the village council and for Sasuke himself. He returned on a razor-thin margin of leniency, brokered heavily by Tsunade and entirely dependent on his compliance. He was stripped of his former rank, placed under a probationary ANBU status, and given a singular, highly classified directive:
Guard the Jinchuuriki. Eliminate remaining Akatsuki threats. Do not, under any circumstances, engage the target.
Which was how Sasuke found himself perched on the sloping, tiled roof of Naruto’s apartment building at 2 in the morning, listening to the blonde snore loud enough to rattle the windowpanes.
It was supposed to be a punishment. The council thought they were humiliating the last Uchiha by turning him into a glorified guard dog for the village pariah-turned-hero. But as the weeks bled into months, Sasuke found a strange, quiet solace in the assignment. The world post-Pain was chaotic, loud, and demanding. Up here on the roof, hidden in the shadows, things were simple. He just had to make sure Naruto was breathing.
There was only one massive flaw in Tsunade’s plan.
Naruto mastered Sage Mode - his sensory capabilities were now unparalleled. You couldn't hide a chakra signature as dark and familiar as Sasuke’s from someone who could sense the heartbeat of a bird a mile away.
It started a week into the assignment. Sasuke was crouching by the chimney, watching the street below, when the apartment window slid open. Naruto didn't look up, didn't call out. He simply set a steaming takeout container of Ichiraku pork miso ramen on the windowsill, alongside a pair of disposable chopsticks.
"Man," Naruto announced loudly to the empty alleyway, stretching his arms over his head. "I accidentally bought waaay too much dinner. It's a real shame there's no one around to eat this perfectly good, extremely hot ramen. Guess I'll just leave it here and hope the Konoha raccoons get it."
He slammed the window shut. Sasuke stared at the bowl for 10 minutes before his pride finally lost out to his empty stomach.
Since then, it became a silent, undeniable routine. Sasuke would take his post. Naruto would leave food out - ramen, dango, sometimes just a perfectly bruised apple - and then proceed to talk to the ceiling while he cleaned his apartment.
"Sakura threatened to punch me into the Hokage monument today," Naruto would say, tossing a kunai into the air and catching it from his spot on the bed. "She says I don't take my physical therapy seriously. But honestly, I think she just likes yelling at me. Kakashi-sensei didn't help either, he just pretended to read his book. Hey, if a certain raccoon is listening, they should know that the new Icha-Icha volume is out, and Kakashi is insufferable."
Up on the roof, Sasuke would lean his head back against the brick chimney, closing his eyes, letting the warm, boisterous cadence of Naruto’s voice wash over him. It was an agonizing, beautiful torture. He was so close, yet separated by a pane of glass and a mountain of unresolved grief, guilt, and unspoken words.
Things shifted late one Tuesday in November.
The temperature plummeted rapidly as a brutal, late-autumn thunderstorm rolled over the Hokage monument. The sky broke open, unleashing a torrential downpour mixed with biting sleet. Lightning spider-webbed across the black sky, followed by the bone-rattling boom of thunder.
Sasuke was soaked to the bone within minutes. His standard-issue ANBU cloak clung heavily to his frame, the cold seeping past his armor and biting into his skin. He shivered, pulling his knees to his chest, his Sharingan blazing to life periodically to cut through the blinding sheets of rain as he scanned the perimeter.
He was miserable, but he wouldn't abandon his post; he had a duty.
Down below, the light in Naruto’s apartment flicked on. Sasuke heard the muffled sounds of pacing, the squeak of floorboards.
Suddenly, the window slid open with a violent clack. Rain blew sideways into the apartment, soaking the floor, but Naruto didn't seem to care. He leaned halfway out the window, his blond hair instantly plastering to his forehead. He wasn't wearing his usual orange; just a pair of worn grey sweatpants and a white t-shirt.
He looked directly up at the roof, straight at where Sasuke was hiding under a minor genjutsu. "I know you're out there, you absolute idiot!" Naruto yelled over the roar of the storm. "I can feel your chakra freezing from here!"
Sasuke held his breath, pressing his back harder against the chimney. Do not engage the target.
"I swear to gods," Naruto shouted, his voice cracking with frustration and worry. "If you don't get down here right now, I’m going to climb up there in my boxers and drag you inside myself! I will fight you in the rain, don't test me!"
Sasuke closed his eyes. He could picture it perfectly. Naruto, stubborn as a mule, risking a slip on the icy tiles just to prove a point. With a heavy sigh that was lost to the wind, Sasuke dropped his genjutsu.
He stepped off the ledge, landing silently on the windowsill before slipping past Naruto and into the apartment. The moment his boots hit the hardwood, the window was slammed shut behind him, cutting off the deafening roar of the storm. The sudden quiet of the apartment was jarring. Water dripped steadily from Sasuke's cloak, forming a puddle on the floorboards.
Naruto stood a few feet away, chest heaving, his blue eyes blazing with a mixture of anger and overwhelming relief. He didn't look at the porcelain cat mask, he looked straight through it. "Take that stupid thing off," Naruto ordered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
Sasuke hesitated. The mask was his barrier - it was the only thing separating Sasuke the missing-nin from ANBU hound. But his hands moved on their own, reaching up to unfasten the clasps. He pulled the mask away, letting it drop to his side.
He looked away, staring at the floor. He couldn't meet Naruto’s eyes. Not yet.
A heavy, plush towel suddenly hit him square in the face. "Dry off before you get sick," Naruto muttered, stepping closer. The anger in his voice was melting, replaced by something entirely too soft. "You're shivering."
Sasuke caught the towel, slowly pulling it down from his face. He finally looked up. Naruto was right there, close enough that Sasuke could smell the rain on his skin and the lingering scent of his laundry detergent.
"I broke orders," Sasuke said, his voice raspy from disuse. It was the first time he spoke to Naruto in months. The sound of his own voice felt foreign in the small room.
"Tsunade's orders are stupid," Naruto replied instantly, crossing his arms. "I'm the Hokage-to-be! My orders override hers… I think. Anyway, I order my shadow guard to not catch pneumonia on my roof."
"I’m supposed to be watching you from a distance, Naruto. Not..." Sasuke gestured vaguely to the apartment, to the proximity between them. "Not this."
"Why?" Naruto challenged, stepping even closer. The space between them was practically non-existent now. Sasuke had to tilt his head slightly to maintain eye contact. "Because they don't trust you? Or because you don't trust you?"
Sasuke’s jaw clenched, "Because I don't deserve to be in here. In your home. After everything I did, everything I tried to do to you... staying in the cold is the least of what I owe."
Naruto’s expression softened completely. The fierce, fighting spirit faded, leaving behind the boy who chased Sasuke across continents. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently gripping Sasuke’s freezing wrist. "You don't owe me suffering, Sasuke," Naruto said quietly, his thumb brushing over the pulse point on Sasuke’s wrist. "You came back, you're here… That's all I ever wanted."
Sasuke stared at where they were touching, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. The cold of the storm was being chased away, replaced by a searing, terrifying heat that started in his chest and spread to his fingertips.
"You're an idiot," Sasuke whispered, but the insult sounded like a prayer.
"Yeah, well," Naruto smiled, a soft, fond thing that made the breath catch in Sasuke's throat. "I'm your idiot. Always have been."
Naruto didn't ask for permission. He didn't need to. He slid his hand up Sasuke’s arm, stepping into his space, and rested his forehead against Sasuke’s. Sasuke let his eyes flutter shut, leaning into the touch, letting the towel drop to the floor.
He raised his hands, hesitating for a fraction of a second before burying his fingers in Naruto’s damp, blonde hair. Naruto exhaled a shaky breath, tilting his head just enough to press his lips against Sasuke’s.
It wasn't urgent or desperate. It was incredibly slow, a quiet, devastating surrender. Sasuke kissed him back, pouring months of silent watching, years of running, and every unspoken apology into the press of their mouths. It tasted like rain and salt, and felt like coming home.
When they finally pulled away, resting their foreheads together again, the storm outside seemed a million miles away. "You're staying the night," Naruto murmured, his eyes still closed, a lazy, happy smile on his lips. "No arguments. The raccoons can have the roof."
Sasuke let out a soft, breathy laugh, his thumb stroking the side of Naruto's neck.
"Fine," Sasuke agreed softly. "But I'm taking the bed."
Naruto opened his eyes, his grin widening into something bright and blinding. "We'll see about that, bastard."
