Work Text:

You remembered a brighter time. A time when he looked at you like you were someone who meant something to him. Like you were everything.

Now he just looked at you like you were see-through.

Satoru had six eyes and could see everything that you couldn’t, and somehow, still managed to make you feel so unseen.

Back when you were still in Jujutsu Tech, he was all over you. You remembered telling Suguru and Shoko then that you really loved him, and you thought he loved you too.

They told you that even a blind man could see how he felt about you. Your face flushed, and you looked over to Nanami, who was sitting in the corner scrolling on his phone. As if sensing your eyes on him, he looked up at you, gave you a short smile, and nodded.

So you did it.

Or… you were about to.

Ask him out, I mean.

But when you made your way to his room, knocking on the door and opening it without an answer because that's just what you two did, you found him pacing his room. Three bouquets lay on his bed and something shiny was in his hand.

You tilted your head sideways, wondering what the hell your best friend was doing.

You cleared your throat and he nearly jumped out of his skin.

With a soft chuckle, you shook your head in amusement. “Six eyes and still jumping. You didn’t hear me knock?”

You’d come here to ask him out, heart beating at something like 100 bpm. But seeing your friend so… unlike himself calmed you down just a bit. You weren’t the only one who felt out of their skin.

You opened your mouth again to repeat your question, but in the time you took to think about all of this, Gojo had gathered all three bouquets in his hand and knelt in front of you.

Your face grew warm as you took in the sight. “W-what are you doing…?” you asked, chuckling nervously.

“I think I love you!” he blurted out, his cheeks red, sunglasses off because overstimulation be damned—he wanted to see you in full light.

You stared back at him like he had six heads instead of six eyes.

“Will you be my girlfriend? I’ll treat you so good. Like a queen!”

And since that day, you two were more inseparable than ever.

You thought it’d stay that way forever. But people get older. Wants, priorities… feelings… they all change with time.

And you seemed to no longer fit that box.

Since you married Gojo, you didn’t have to worry about finances, so you had little to no money in your bank account. But you would have spent every last penny that you did have if it meant you’d get back your husband.

The one who looked at you like you hung the moon and stars by hand. The one who told you he loved you no less than five times a day because according to him, that’s just what you deserved. The one who thought flowers every day was the bare minimum.

You wanted to hate him, so badly you did. But you couldn’t. No matter how hard you tried to convince yourself that you did, you never would be able to.

In truth, you simply hated knowing that no matter how cold the shoulder he gave you, you’d turn right back around and wrap your arms around him. No matter how many times you saw him leave his blindfold on when he looked at you, you’d still fall asleep thinking about his cerulean blues.

You tried to take vacations with him. Pull him away from the stress of the city where it all started. The place you’d gotten married. Where he’d promised to love you forever and ever. But apparently, that only made him more compelled to break said promise.

Sometimes, you watch him sleep, tracing the years of wear and tear written across his face.

“Don’t you remember I was all you wanted?” you sigh softly, tears welling in your eyes. “Do you?”

It was a greater comfort of yours, to think back on the nights that he’d hold you in his warm and strong arms, whispering in your ear about how he’d love you for as long as he was alive, about how he’d never leave. Press a sweet kiss to your temple and pet you until you fell asleep, an immense amount of love in your heart.

Hating Satoru was impossible. You just hated knowing that the world could all fall apart, collapse into itself, and you’d still be found in his arms.

“What did I do to you!” you cry out, tears and snot streaming down your face as you finally confront the man who was supposed to be your forever.

“I’m busy,” he mumbles, refusing to even turn his head in your direction.

“Please, ‘Toru!” you practically beg, rushing forward and kneeling in front of his office chair. “Please… just tell me what I did? Tell me so I can make it better!” your voice cracking on the words as you choke on your sobs.

The room was dark. It was his office. There wasn’t even a light bulb in the lamp. He could see perfectly fine. Could see the way your hands trembled. Could see the way you couldn’t tell if you were allowed to touch his knees or not.

You, on the other hand, couldn’t see anything. Least of all, the way tears pooled into the fabric of his blindfold as he pushed you further and further away.

Being a sorcerer was a death sentence. He couldn’t rope you into that. He’d rather you hate him than be heartbroken over his inevitable death.

You wanted to hate him, so badly you did. But you couldn’t. No matter how hard you tried to convince yourself that you did, it was impossible.
