Work Text:
Avery was known for surprises. His friends knew him by his spontaneous gifts, parties, and treats. D3rlord3 did not.
D3rlord3 knew him as more than just a friend. He knew him as someone who cared for him; someone who would’ve died for him. If not for his interference of course. Yet, he did not yet realize the extent of Avery’s antics.
One evening, Avery and D3rlord3 were out exploring a dark cave together, when they happened upon a dungeon. After breaking the spawner and looting the nearby chests, Avery found a small item.
“Look, Der! It’s a music disc!” He chirped, tossing it up in the air before catching it. “Don’t think I’ve heard this one yet. You?”
He showed the knight the disc, whose eyes narrowed on the color surrounding the middle. “Mm…” D3rlord3 hummed, his padded finger pressing against the disc. “Chirp. I like that one.” He broke a small smile at the object, it having been one of his favorites.
For D3rlord3, this moment of small talk passed by without much thought as they kept exploring the cavern. However, Avery took this into thought.
A mischievous idea was born that day.
Many mornings later, Avery had dragged D3rlord3 with him on a supposed “surprise trip.” The knight did not understand what was to come, but if it was from Avery, he was sure it wouldn’t be too bad.
Soon enough, they were both inside a large room shrouded within a cliff. Avery had bounded off somewhere without D3rlord3, leaving him in the dark. This was typical for Avery to do, considering his lack of awareness or memory of certain things, but D3lord3 had grown to tolerate it. In fact, he even found it endearing sometimes.
As D3rlord3 stumbled around the shadowed room, a sudden tone caught him off guard. A waltz like tune began to play, one that he recognized almost instantly. Chirp.
The room suddenly lit with torchlight, leaving D3rlord3 slightly taken aback at the charade. Avery was sitting on the edge of the jukebox, which was in behind a wide wooden area.
“Hehehe… you like what you see?” The slime giggled, before bouncing up from his seat and walking over towards his friend.
“H-… how did you…?” The knight was bewildered by the sight in front of him: a now lit cave area with lights hanging from the ceiling and little blue petals draped around the floor.
“A little redstone,” Avery interrupted. He smiled up a D3rlord3, his eyes seeming more cunning than ever. “Care for a dance?”
D3rlord3 glanced down in surprise, a small breathless gasp escaping him as he stuttered. He had never felt this kind of emotion before. His hands were clammy and his face was hot, which wasn’t something he was used to.
“I… I don’t know how to…” D3rlord3 trailed off, his back straightening as he stammered. “I… I haven’t danced before, Avery…”
The slime couldn’t help but giggle at the response he got, suddenly taking D3rlord3’s hands in his own. “Well, wouldn’t this be a nice learning opportunity? I wouldn’t mind teaching you.” He teased, slowly beginning to pull D3rlord3 onto the half-assed dance-floor.
D3rlord3 didn’t pull back. Instead, he let Avery shift him over towards it. His lips hung slightly agape as he mumbled, fumbling over whatever words his brain was trying to put into sentences.
Avery chuckled a little more before pulling him closer and placing a hand on his hip. “Just follow my lead, alright?” He began taking the knights’ hands in his own, leading them to their places. “Try to not step on my feet as well,” the slime teased, having noticed how D3rlord3 had become slightly clumsier in the moment.
This was an entirely new experience for D3rlord3. Not only had he never been led into a dance, but he had never felt so helpless before. Especially in a way like this. He could feel his legs tensing up as Avery guided him along, his own words blurring within his mind. His mouth began moving, trying to muster any kind of word imaginable, but nothing came out. He felt like a bumbling idiot, and he couldn’t tell if he hated it or not. And… god… had Avery always looked like this? The slight smirk draped across his face as he giggled at the knight’s state was intoxicating, and D3rlord3 began to feel his cheeks begin to heat up at the sight.
“See, it’s not that bad. You’re just… really bad at it…” The slime teased once again, pulling him closer as they swayed. The song continued in the background, practically flooding the room with its melody as they danced. Avery’s hand slid down D3rlord3’s shoulder to his upper arm, rubbing it with his thumb as to try to soothe the knight slightly. However, it just made him melt even more.
The knight tried to respond, maybe even apologize, but his words ended in a quiet mumble as his hand tightened on Avery’s hip. He tried to stabilize himself with the feeling of the slime under him, which only slightly helped. His heart was racing, his words were jumbled, and he could barely even focus on keeping up with Avery as they danced. He could barely look him in the eyes anymore, glancing off anywhere but at him.
Avery couldn’t help but feel something tug inside him too, but he was too bold just to let it boil inside him. He leaned into the knight’s touch before letting his hand slowly slide upwards. His fingers seemed to dance along his neck before finally reaching the side of his chin. The slime paused for a second, debating heavily on if he wanted to do this, before deciding that it was his only chance.
D3rlord3’s thoughts were broken by a sudden pull of his jaw. His eyed widened behind the shadow of his helmet as he stumbled slightly forward. “A-Avery—“
His voice was cut off by the feeling of the slime’s lips against his. A shocked gasp escaped him before eventually his eyes began to flutter shut and he leaned in, melting into Avery’s figure. His arms wrapped around Avery, the once cold armor now strikingly warm against the slime’s body.
They stayed like that for a while, both of them not wanting to lose this moment of pure bliss. As the kiss played out, Avery’s hand would dance under the knight’s helmet and play with their hair, in which D3rlord3 would lean even more into the kiss in response. After a few minutes of this had passed, Avery pulled away, his breath slightly heavy from it all.
“Hah… you alright there? You look a little…” The slime chuckled quietly, cocking his head at the figure in front of him. D3rlord3 was practically gasping for air after, his eyes quickly darting away from Avery as he mumbled. “mmm…” was the only noise he could muster, trying to stay as stable as he could after that, even though he could barely even stand. “I…”
“I think what you wanna say is ‘Thank you,’ Der,” he teased, laughing a little more before he grabbed the disc from the jukebox. He knew he should probably get this oaf home before he completely collapsed. “C’mon, I left dinner in the furnace and I’m pretty sure the house is burning down.” The slime joked once again as he began dragging D3rlord3 once more, making more remarks about how clumsy the knight had become after.
Yet D3rlord3 didn’t respond like he usually would. Instead, he let himself be pulled along, his body still swirling with emotions. It was at least a little familiar now. And as Avery dragged him along, he uttered a faint “Thank you.”
