"Second best"

Summary:

Saparata and Fluixon broke up a year ago. They ended on... okay terms. Fluixon kept moving forward. He's made new memories, found new people to laugh with, and the ache of the past has blurred into nothing but a past chapter in his book. Meanwhile Saparata? He's still stuck on that day. He still remembers Fluix's favorite songs, his usual morning routine, his favorite flower.

To everyone, a year has passed.

To Saparata it still feels like yesterday.

Work Text:

Saparata used to love summer. It wasn’t because of the weather. God no. It’s because he got to spend it with his lover. His one and only. His universe. Fluix. They were practically inseparable. They'd buy ice cream that melted faster than they could eat it, duck into random stores just to escape the relentless heat, and wander the streets long after sunset with no destination in mind. They never needed one. As long as they were together, anywhere felt like home. Saparata thought summer is supposed to be the best time of the year! So why did he cry so hard when August hit?

saparata we need to talk.

Fluixon texted the white haired boy.

Saparata was confused. So confused. He texted back right away.

Uh sure! Our usual spot?

Fluixon takes a few moments to text back. The chat bubble appears then disappears. Every second stretched out longer than the last.

yeah sure.

Saparata’s chest slightly tightened as he saw the text. Was Fluixon mad? Did Saparata do something? Shit. Is it because he was too clingy? Maybe he needs to distance himself more. Or maybe he’s too open about their relationship? Was Saparata being too open and vulnerable? Saparata’s thoughts swirled more and more like a tornado. What if Fluix likes someone else now and… and! Okay Saparata don’t think too negatively. Maybe something happened that doesn’t involve him at all. Yeah! That’s probably it. He repeated the line in his head until he believed it.

They met at the small park where they'd spent countless evenings together. There was a weird silence between the two. The silence felt heavier than the humid August air.

“Saparata I love you.” Fluixon says calmly.

Relief washed over the angel.

“I love you too-”

“Saparata, let’s break up.”

At that moment, Separate’s world came to a stop.

“What-?”

“It’s not because I don’t love you, it's just because– It’s. How do I word this? It feels like we haven’t had a lot of communication lately. Whenever you were visibly upset with something you never told me straight up what’s wrong and-”

Saparata’s heart cracked like glass under pressure.

"Then... why didn't you tell me?" His voice trembled. "Why didn't you confront me?"

“I would but it seemed immature of me if I did that.”

“Well if you did then it would save our relationship then right? I can communicate now. Please don’t do this.”

“We can try again in the future.”

“No! No. Please. Talk to me now. I can talk now.” Saparata cries out.

Fluixon looks at Saparata. That’s all he does for a few moments. Saparata tears threatened to spill out of his eyes. All Saparata wanted to do was yell and beg for his world to not do this. The black haired man took Saparata’s hands into his.

“Saparata Theria, I really do adore you.” Fluixon whispered out as he stared into the golden eyes in front of him.

Saparata couldn’t contain himself anymore. Those words that came out of Fluix? Basically like a wrecking ball thrashing harshly into a dam. Saparata’s throat started to tighten as tears pooled out of his eyes.

“Don’t say that you’re making it hard.” Saparata’s voice came out cracked and raw.

“You’re making it hard. You’re crying and I didn’t expect that.” Fluixon responded back, trying to keep the mood light? Well as light as you could in a situation like this.

.

The white haired man jolts awake. He touches his face. It was wet. Damn it he had that dream again. A year has passed. Yet somehow, that day in August still leeched onto him. He lets out a groan as he taps on his phone.

1:43pm, August 6th.

Of course it’s that day. This is going to be a long day. He tosses his phone onto the mattress and buried his face in his pillow.

"...Get over it already."

The words sound pathetic coming from his own mouth. A year. Three hundred and sixty-five days, give or take. People moved on in less time than that. Movies made heartbreak look temporary. Friends always said the same thing.

"It will get better, give it time."

What a cruel joke.

If anything, Saparata felt worse as time moved on. Knowing that soon he will have to accept that Fluixon will just be a distant memory. Knowing that he wouldn’t ever hear his laugh, or have those moments where he would stare into those beautiful amethyst eyes. Saparata rolls onto his back and stares into the popcorn ceiling. The same ceiling he memorized months ago. Every groove. Every bump. He wonders if his love, if Fluixon Aculon knows what day it was. He probably doesn’t even know. Back then, mornings always started with a notification.

good morning sunshine :)

Saparata opens his phone once again, opening his messages app. He already knows what’s to come but a small part of him hopes. Prays. Prays that Fluixon texted. Of course he didn’t. Such a silly fantasy from the angel. Still…

Tap.

The conversation opens. His last message flashes his screen.

Hey Fluixon, I know that you probably don’t want to hear from me but I have a few things I wanted to say. You can 100% just block me….

Let’s not read the rest of that embarrassing message! Saparata proceeds to scroll past that. Back to old messages.

Look at what I got Saps!

It’s Kirby

It reminded me of you <3

He smiles. He wishes he didn’t. That short shot of dopamine quickly transitioned into a tight squeeze in his chest.

"...Idiot."

He wasn't even sure who he was talking to anymore. Fluixon? Or himself? A sudden vibration snapped him out of it. A notification. His heart lurched before his brain had time to catch up. For one fleeting, ridiculous second… Fluix? It was just a message from his calendar.

August 6th.

No title, no description, no nothing. He didn’t even need this stupid reminder! He'd convinced himself that next year would be different. By the time August rolled around again, he'd laugh at how dramatic he'd been. Instead… He was still waking up crying. Still rereading messages he should've deleted. Still dreaming of someone who had already woken up from the dream long ago. The phone falls softly beside his head.

“I wonder.. Do you still think about me?”

Saparata whispers out into the room as if his words could reach Fluixon.

The silence answers him.

Somewhere in the city Fluixon is probably with his friends. Maybe he’s on a date. Maybe August 6th was just another Thursday for him. Saparata shuts hit eyes tightly. That thought hurt more than any knife could.

August 6th.

The day that the world ended for Saparata Theria.

It was just another day for Fluixon Aculon.
