We'll Call It Solidarity

Summary:

The sudden jerk rattled the cuffs loudly, which seemed to be what really snapped Kokichi awake. His gaze darted down to the chain, then traveled up Shuichi’s arm, his eyes widening as they locked onto the detective's face.

"??? What the hell?????" Kokichi repeated, louder this time.

In a fraction of a second, the groggy confusion vanished, replaced by a sudden, oddly bright grin. It didn’t quite reach his eyes, the grin.

“...Shuichi? What is this?”

Shuichi felt a headache coming on.

Chapter Text

The air felt almost heavy when Shuichi woke up. He blinked slowly, dragging his right hand across his eyes. His right arm felt oddly heavy— a dull, throbbing ache radiating from his wrist.

It must’ve been the training session that he had done with Kaito the night before.

Kaito had been pushing him harder lately. They all had been.

He had barely gotten enough sleep the past couple days following Gonta’s execution.

Ever since Gonta’s execution, sleep had become a luxury Shuichi couldn’t afford. He was just so entirely, deeply exhausted. He was so… so tired. Every movement felt like wading through wet cement. It was a struggle just to keep his eyes open, let alone drag himself out of bed. It was honestly hard trying not to sink back into the pillows, trying to become one with the warmth so he didn’t have to experience another day in this killing game.

He was so close to just shutting his eyes and trying to get some more sleep– he hadn’t heard Monokuma’s morning announcement yet, so it was surely too early for him to be up. He could just close his eyes...

Then, the blurry shapes of the room drifted into focus.

The lingering fog of sleep vanished, instantly replaced by a plunge of ice-cold dread.

His eyes widened. This wasn’t his room. He wasn’t in his room.

Where the hell was he?

The walls were a sterile, light cream color. Directly ahead, a massive, blank monitor stared back at him like an unblinking eye. He was slumped on the floor, his back pressed against something hard and wooden, but his limbs still felt too sluggish to fully cooperate.

Panicking, he tried to pull his left hand back to push himself up. Clank.

The sharp, biting chill of metal dug into his flesh. Shuichi snapped his head down so fast his vision swam, his breath catching in his throat as his brain scrambled to process the sight.

Handcuffs. His hand was in a goddamn handcuff.

A heavy, industrial steel cuff was locked tight around his right wrist. But it wasn't a pipe or a wall fixture anchoring him in place.

The chain stretched across the small gap between them, the second cuff clasped firmly around the wrist of Kokichi Ouma.

Shuichi choked back a frustrated, desperate groan. Anyone but him. Not now. Not after the horrors of the last trial. He didn't have the emotional bandwidth to deal with Kokichi's mind games, let alone be tethered to him. So much had just happened. He didn’t need this right now. Kokichi was slumped against the same wooden structure—which Shuichi now recognized as the footboard of a queen-sized bed. The smaller boy’s eyes were shut, his head tilted weirdly against his shoulder. He was very obviously asleep. Or unconscious, because that was always an option.

Desperate to avoid a confrontation, Shuichi tensed, trying to delicately manipulate his wrist to test the slack of the chain. If he could just find a way out before—

Clink.

The metal rattled again. The sound was deafening, echoing throughout the quiet room. “...Mmh..? What the hell…?” One violent eye blinked open, glazed with sleep. Instinctively, Kokichi lifted his right arm to rub his face, violently yanking Shuichi’s left hand along with it. The sharp metal bit into Shuichi's skin, causing him to wince.

Shuichi let out a long, defeated sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose with his free hand. “Listen, I don’t– I don’t know either, okay? I just woke up too. I don’t know where we are.” As if on cue, the blank monitor on the wall flashed to life, flooding the room with a harsh, blinding white light.

Shuichi flinched, shielding his eyes with his free arm. The screen flipped to static for a couple seconds, but as the screen resolved itself, the figure on display made his stomach drop.

Lo and behold: Monokuma.

The black-and-white bear grinned through the static. Shuichi’s shoulders sagged, a hollow numbness settling over him. Somehow, he wasn’t at all surprised. “Puhuhuhu~!”

The bear’s shrill, grating laugh blared through the speakers, echoing off the cramped walls. Out of the corner of his eye, Shuichi swore he saw Kokichi cringe at the sound. “Ah, look what we’ve got here! The esteemed detective and the tricky thief! What a dramatic duo!” Monokuma quipped, his high-pitched voice dripping with mock excitement.

“Now, now, I know what you’re both thinking: ‘Where the hell am I? Why am I stuck with him? Why is life so inherently unfair?’ Well, lucky for you, Iiiiii’ve got the answers!" Monokuma leaned closer to the camera, his red eye gleaming through the static.

"You two have been hand-selected to participate in our loooovely new motive! If you don’t like your partner, hey, don’t blame me! It was the verdict of a totally unbiased, completely random prize wheel! So cry me a river and bear with the results, puhuhu!”

The bear let out a contented, self-satisfied sigh, clearly thrilled with his own terrible pun. “Aaaanyways, welcome to your new home away from home! I call it... the Trust Chamber! Or, for my aesthetically inclined students: The Solidarity Suite!”

Shuichi suppressed a shudder. The Solidarity Suite.

Leave it to Monokuma to give a kidnapping cell a whimsical title.

Monokuma continued, “As you can see, you and your lovely partner are linked together by a one-meter chain and a pair of sturdy, high-grade handcuffs! Only one hand each, of course— we don’t want to make things completely impossible for you, puhu!” His voice suddenly took on a deeper, more threatening tone,

“The only exit to this room is directly on this wall, part of this monitor, and it is completely, utterly locked. There is no trick. There is no loophole. You are not getting out on your own, no matter how hard you try.”

A cold dread rippled down Shuichi’s spine. He strained his eyes, trying to peer past the massive screen to find any sign of an exit.

Sure enough, he could just barely make out a ghostly, rectangular outline embedded in the wall, stretching from the floor to about a third of the way up the monitor.

That must be a door.

“However! Like I said, I'm a merciful headmaster!" Monokuma chirped, his voice bouncing right back to its cheerful, manic tone. "There are two ways out of this room.

Way number one: you cannot leave until you achieve total, mutual trust. What does that mean? Man, I dunno! Figure it out yourself!"

The bear paused, his grin somehow widening.

"…Or, you could just kill each other, of course~! If someone dies inside the suite, the killer gets an immediate graduation pass. And get this—without a class trial! A free kill! A free escape! Isn’t that just spectacular?!”

The words echoed in the silence of the room.

….What?

Bile rose in Shuichi’s throat, hot and bitter. He forced himself to swallow it down, his hands trembling.

Trust?

He looked over at Kokichi, who was staring at the monitor with an unreadable expression on his face.

Shuichi let out a breath that was dangerously close to a hollow, hysterical laugh.

Trust.

Kokichi Ouma.

Those two concepts didn't belong in the same language, let alone the same sentence.

Monokuma let out one last, ear-splitting “Puhuhu!” before the monitor snapped black, leaving the room plunged into a suffocating silence.

For a long moment, neither of them moved. The threat hung heavy in the sterile air. A free kill. No class trial. It was the ultimate temptation in a game like this, a golden ticket handed directly to them.

Shuichi’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his head again to look at Kokichi.

If Kokichi decided to play the game, Shuichi was at a massive disadvantage. He was exhausted, sluggish. Kokichi seemed fine.

Then, as quickly as it had faded, the mask snapped back into place. The unreadable expression vanished and Kokichi let out a dramatic, exaggerated sigh, slumping backward against the bedpost, dragging Shuichi’s arm with him.

“Woooow, a free pass? Monokuma really knows how to treat a guy!” Kokichi chimed, his voice dripping with forced cheer. He pivoted his head to look at Shuichi, his purple eyes glittering with mischief.

“Sooo, Mr. Detective… are you gonna kill me? I mean, I’m totally defenseless! A fragile, innocent boy, completely at your mercy!”

Shuichi let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding, rubbing his temples with his free left hand. “I’m not going to kill you, Kokichi.”

“Awww, really? Lies from a detective? My heart is practically breaking!” Kokichi pouted, crossing his free arm over his chest.

“But seriously, ‘total mutual trust’? Is Monokuma brain-dead? He might as well have just locked us in here forever. Everyone knows I’m a big fat liar, and you’re a gloomy stalker who doesn’t trust anyone.”

His grin widened the smallest bit, taunting the taller boy.

“I don’t stalk people,” Shuichi muttered automatically, though he didn’t have the energy to put any real bite into it. He gripped the wooden footboard and pulled himself up, yanking Kokichi’s hand upwards.

“Look, standing around isn’t– it’s not going to get us out of here. We need to figure out what we’re working with.”

“Yay, an investigation!” Kokichi cheered in mock-excitement.

Because they were tethered by a mere one-meter chain, every movement required a clumsy, awkward synchronization. If Shuichi took a step too fast, the metal yanked painfully against Kokichi’s wrist. If Kokichi suddenly darted in a different direction, Shuichi was dragged along.

They began to shuffle around the perimeter of the room. The space was incredibly cramped– clearly designed to force them into constant proximity.

“Hey, look at this!” Kokichi pointed with his free hand toward a small metallic hatch built into the wall near the monitor.

Shuichi leaned in, inspecting the small plaque next to it. “It says food and water are dispensed here twice a day. Morning and evening. If we miss the window, the hatch locks until the next cycle.”

“Legacy rationing! How retro,” Kokichi hummed, tapping his chin. “So Monokuma isn't planning on starving us to death. Boring. I was hoping we’d have to fight over the last crumb of a stale cracker.”

Shuichi ignored the comment, though he felt a headache forming. He turned his attention to the next section of the room. A heavy fabric curtain, a dull gray-blue color, hung from a rod nearing the corner of the room.

Curious, Shuichi stepped forward and pulled the curtain back. His face instantly drained of color.

Behind the curtain was a smaller, closet-sized room that contained just a singular toilet and a small sink. That was it. No door. No separating wall. Just a flimsy piece of fabric separating the bathroom from the rest of the room.

“...Wow.” Kokichi spoke, putting his free hand on his waist. “Oh, wow!! Monokuma really did that! What’s the matter, Shuichi? You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Don’t tell me you’re shy?”

Shuichi quickly let the curtain fall back into place, his cheeks burning with a mix of embarrassment and sheer frustration. “...This is insane. We’re going to have to… establish some boundaries.”

“Aww, but Shuichi, we’re joined at the wrist! We’re practically soulmates now! No secrets between us,” Kokichi teased, leaning entirely too close into Shuichi’s personal space.

Shuichi sighed heavily, moving along to avoid Kokichi’s gaze. In the center of the room sat the only piece of actual furniture besides the bed: a small, low-standing wooden shelf. On top of it sat a sparse collection of board games.

Shuichi knelt down, dragging Kokichi down with him. He sorted through the boxes. Monopoly, Jenga, Chess, and a deck of standard playing cards.

“Games?” Shuichi murmured. “Why would he give us games?”

“To pass the time while we slowly go insane, obviously,” Kokichi said, snatching the deck of cards with his free hand and somehow shuffling them one-handedly. Skillful. “Or maybe they’re rigged to explode! Do you wanna play poker? If I win, I get to steal that stupid hat you left behind..”

“No,” Shuichi said firmly, standing back up.

“Damn.”

Finally, their eyes landed on the centerpiece of the room. The queen-sized bed. It was neatly made with crisp, white sheets and two fluffy pillows.

…It was a singular bed. For two people.

Shuichi felt that headache grow behind his eyes. The weight of Gonta’s death, the physical exhaustion of Kaito’s training, and the sheer mental toll of dealing with Kokichi were finally catching up to him. His legs felt like lead.

“Well,” Kokichi said, his voice dropping its manic edge for a brief moment as he stared at the mattress. “This is going to be incredibly annoying.”

“We don’t have a choice,” Shuichi said, his voice quiet and thoroughly drained. “It’s already getting late. The monitor showed a clock earlier… it’s just past nighttime announcement hours, apparently. We need to sleep. We can figure out a way out of here tomorrow.”

He started towards the bed, urging Kokichi to follow him. “Wow, giving up already? The great detective is throwing in the towel,” Kokichi taunted, though his own shoulders seemed a bit slumped. The dark circles under Kokichi's eyes were stark against his pale skin; he was just as tired, even if he refused to admit it.

“Kokichi, I’m exhausted. I’m not giving up.” Shuichi said honestly, climbing onto the left side of the bed. “I said we’ll look around again tomorrow.”

He sat down, carefully arranging his right arm so the chain draped loosely across the center of the mattress.

Kokichi watched him for a moment, his expression unreadable in the light of the room. Then, with a dramatic, exaggerated yawn, he climbed onto the right side. He didn’t tuck himself into the blankets, choosing instead to lie flat on his back, staring up at the ceiling.

The chain lay clinked between them, a cold, metallic reminder of their situation.

“Hey, Shuichi?” Kokichi’s voice broke the silence, surprisingly quiet.

“Yeah?”

“If you try to strangle me in my sleep… I’ll make sure to haunt you forever.”

Shuichi closed his eyes, pulling up the sheets. “Goodnight, Kokichi.”

“Eh, boring answer.”

As the silence settled over the room, Shuichi lay awake for a little while longer, staring into the dim light. He was trapped in a room with the potentially most dangerous, unpredictable person left in the killing game, bound by a chain, with a literal license to kill hanging over their heads.

He didn’t trust Kokichi. Kokichi didn’t trust him.

And as Shuichi finally drifted into a restless sleep, he had a terrifying feeling that Monokuma’s stupid "Trust Chamber" was going to break them both before they ever found a way out.
