didn't mean to break a heart

Summary:

"What did ya two do?" Osamu demanded.

Bokuto averted his eyes and bowed his head in shame. "We were just trying to help, and Hinata took things the wrong way and…" he trailed off. Bokuto couldn't even bring himself to say it.

"Hinata now thinks Atsumu doesn't have any feelings for him," Inunaki sadly explained.

Notes:

Happy Atsuhina Day! 😆

Work Text:

Atsumu leaned his head on the counter. "I really thought Shouyou-kun liked me," he mumbled just loud enough for Osamu to hear him.

"I honestly thought he did too." So much so that Osamu would've bet money on it. He always had got the impression from Hinata that Atsumu could do no wrong in his eyes. "Did ya do somethin' to scare him off?"

Atsumu let out a frustrated sigh. "I can't think of anything. Like everythin' was normal, and now anytime he sees me he can't seem to get away from me quick enough." He didn't know what to do. During practice, Hinata acted like he normally did, so Atsumu thought that everything was okay between them again, but the moment Foster said they were finished for the day, Hinata would be gone before anyone could even blink.

"Ya have ta of done somethin' because Shouyou wouldn't just start avoiding ya of all people." It had a misunderstanding because Osamu couldn't think of Atsumu doing anything to upset Hinata to such a degree.

"But I can't find out what since he won't answer any of my calls or texts." And Atsumu didn't think it would be fair to corner Hinata during practice, especially with the team being there. Atsumu forced himself to stand up. "I need some fresh air." He didn't think it was going to help clear his head, but he had to try something.

Osamu hated seeing his twin look so hurt, and he would've gone with him to make sure he was okay, but he couldn't shake off a feeling. So, he turned and narrowed his eyes at a very guilty-looking Bokuto and Inunaki. "What did ya two do?" he demanded.

He doesn't understand how they did it, but he'll never forget the hopeful look leaving Hinata's eyes. They tried to reassure him, but Hinata wouldn't listen to them. They broke his heart, and it was the worst feeling.

"Ya better fix this," warned Osamu.

Inunaki rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "We wanted to, but Meian-san said we did enough damage and doesn't want us to make it worse."

Osamu was about to lose his patience. "And do tell me how could it get any worse?"

"True…" Bokuto replied. He should've listened to Akaashi about not getting involved, but he had so got caught up in wanting Hinata and Atsumu to have the same happiness they had.

"Thank ya for agreein' to do some taste testing, Shouyou," said Osamu as he placed a plate of onigiri in front of Hinata.

Hinata smiled awkwardly. "No problem, Osamu-san." It wasn't like he had much of a choice. Bokuto and Inunaki had practically dragged him here with the promise of free onigiri and that it would be just the three of them and Osamu.

The door to the restaurant opened. "I brought what ya needed, Samu." Atsumu froze and dropped the bag he was holding when he saw Hinata. He hadn't expected to see him here, and one glance at his twin told him that this was his plan. What was Osamu thinking? It wasn't fair on Hinata to corner him like this.

Hinata was out of his seat and was about to bolt when Osamu placed his hand on his shoulders, stopping him.

"These two idiots need to clear up a serious misunderstandin'," Osamu said as he directed Hinata's attention towards Bokuto and Inunaki. The reason he waited for Atsumu to arrive was that he needed to hear this just as much as Hinata.

Bokuto and Inunaki bowed. "We're sorry," they both declared loudly.

Hinata and Atsumu were confused about what was happening.

Inunaki took a deep breath before saying, "Hinata, we shouldn't have teased you about your feelings for Atsumu."

Bokuto nodded in agreement. "We were trying to get you to confess because Tsum Tsum wasn't going to do it." They just wanted Hinata and Atsumu to be happy together, and things got out of hand. Bokuto felt incredibly guilty about how things turned out.

"It wasn't our intention to make you think Atsumu didn't care about you, far from it." And Inunaki will never understand how they made Hinata think that.

Atsumu stared at Hinata in disbelief. "Is that true? Do ya have feelin's for me, Shouyou-kun?" He could feel his heart beating hard against his chest. Was the reason Hinata had been avoiding him because of Inunaki and Bokuto's teasing?

Hinata looked down, shyly, and nodded. He knew Bokuto and Inunaki thought they were helping, but they just made things a hundred times worse because what was he supposed to do now that Atsumu knew about his feelings? The last thing Hinata wanted to do was leave the team, but if it were the only way that made Atsumu comfortable, he would do it.

Atsumu wasted no more time as he rushed towards Hinata and wrapped his arms around him. He needed to prove to Hinata that those thoughts were wrong. "How could ya think I didn't care about ya, Shouyou-kun?" Atsumu turned his head slightly so he could glare at Bokuto and Inunaki, who in turn legged it out of the restaurant. He would deal with those two later. Right now he needed to give his full attention to Hinata.

"Atsumu-san?" Hinata's voice was barely above a whisper, and it sounded like he was about to cry.

Atsumu pulled back slightly so he could lean his forehead against Hinata's. "I'm in love with ya, Shouyou-kun." It felt like a breath of fresh air for him to finally say those words.

After hearing those words, Hinata broke down. All his thoughts from the past couple of days came crashing down on him. He never should've started to question himself about Atsumu not feeling the same way. It had been obvious, but they both had been too scared and stubborn to make the first move. "I love you, too," he said between sobs.

Atsumu attempted to pull Hinata closer as he whispered comforting words to help calm him down. It pained his heart to see Hinata like this.

Osamu went out the back to give Atsumu and Hinata some privacy. He was relieved that everything was sorted between the two. Now he needed to think of a way to get back at Bokuto and Inunaki. Osamu knew they meant well, but that didn't change the fact that they caused his twin and Hinata unnecessary distress.
