Chapter 1: First Day of Junior Year

Chapter Text

Funneh’s nightmare is always the same, the day of Valerie’s murder. She remembers exactly what she was doing when Valerie was dying, listening to stupid campfire stories. To think that she was doing such a simplistic task while her friend was turning into ash. The nightmare ends with her staring into the mirror and her reflection glitching before she wakes up in a cold sweat. The horrors of that night follow her everyday and Funneh finds herself running away from it every single time.

Evening

Jet-lagged and exhausted from unpacking, Funneh finds herself crouching down in the shower, letting the hot water run past her shoulders. The water dotting all over her back as she reminisces sophomore year. Her, Valerie, alongside Gold, were all lying on the freshly cut grass together, looking at the clouds and giggling about the weird shapes that passed by their young eyes. Funneh crosses her arms, shuddering at the memory, fingernails digging into her skin as the boiling hot water keeps her grounded in her reality. Valerie is dead, and her killer is still running around town. Tears cloud her vision, the loud water silencing her regrets and washing them down the drain. The water stops.

Her phone buzzes on the bathroom counter, it’s Gold. Funneh picks up the call with haste. Funneh dries her hair as Gold cheerfully recounts her events during summer on the phone, “Yeah, Rainbow can be SO boring sometimes! I remember calling her to hang out, but she never answers. She has to have some sort of sleeping disorder.” She giggles, “I miss you a lot.” A pause. Funneh carefully searches for the words to respond, her shoulders relax as she stops drying her hair, “Gold. I miss you too.” Funneh genuinely smiles. ‘I don’t care for anyone in this school, I just want to be with you.’ That last sentence goes unsaid. Soft quietness sits between them.

“Of course you do, we’ll be together tomorrow once I arrive at the dorms.” Gold beams, “I’m heading off to bed now, goodnight!”

“Goodnight Gold”

Funneh sighs, so much can change in one year, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready to face it.

Morning

While Funneh is putting away the last of her luggage, she hears the front door open with none other than Gold standing at the front entranceway.

“FUNNEH!” Gold embraces Funneh in a tight hug. She doesn’t let go for a whole minute. “OMG life has been so boring without you.” She steps back, taking in Funneh’s new appearance. Her hair had grown out even longer, her natural black hair color shaping her matured face beautifully. Her blue eyes are hardened, but her smile still remains the same… slightly.

Gold herself has changed too, Funneh notes, her hair was no longer dyed sitting in its natural color. She’s gotten taller and wears lighter makeup than before. She looked great.

“Y’know we’re the only ones that provide entertainment for this school,” Funneh jokes. A soft knock occurs at the door, before opening shortly after.

“What’s the point of knocking if you’re just going to open the door anyway, Kyran.” Kyran laughs, rolling his eyes at Gold’s comment, “Hey Funneh, long time no see.” He flashes her a confident smile.

Woah. This was not the same Kyran Funneh met during her second year. He no longer stuttered, his back was straight, and his eyes were much brighter. Kyran gives Gold a kiss on her forehead. “OMG”

“Surprise!” Gold says with an awkward laugh. “I wasn’t sure how to tell you…”

Funneh feigns hurt, “Gold! How could you! Aren’t I your best friend?”

“Duh, you’re my best friend, but I wanted to tell you in person.”

“What am I going to do with you two?” Funneh sighs.

Another person walks into their dorm, “Yumi!” Funneh shouts. As composed as ever, Yumi greets the group warmly. “Hello everyone.”

“Woah, talk about a family reunion.” Kyran laughs. Something was missing, someone was missing, Funneh thought. “School is starting soon,” Yumi says.

“Right, you guys give me a second, I’m going to get freshened up,” Funneh says, heading to the bathroom. With a click of the lock, Funneh looks into the mirror, fixing up her light pink hair and gazing into her pink contacts… pink?

Funneh screams before stepping back, Valerie! Valerie was just staring at her in the mirror. Valerie’s usually neat hair is now faded into a muted pink, eyes a pearly white and smoke surrounded her transparent figure. Even in such a devastating state, Valerie still looked put together.

A knock at the door quickly follows her short-lived scream: “Funneh? Funneh, are you OK?” Gold calls out. Funneh gasps, her reflection looks normal again, “I’m fine! I just saw a giant spider, it’s dead now!” Her shoulders relaxed, as she steadied her breathing.

Gold goes quiet on the other end for a brief moment, “Ok… come on then, school starts in twenty minutes and I do not want to be late.”

“So far, my schedule doesn’t look too bad. Chemistry first period is ridiculous, but I got the art elective I wanted,” Funneh says, leaning next to the locker that Gold is fumbling to open, “Forget that! I can’t carry around all of these textbooks all year. Why do these lockers never work?!” Funneh shrugs as she opens up her phone to Minegram. Alec hadn’t reached out to her at all during the summer. Funneh wonders if he thought about her. “I DID IT!!” Gold exclaims, clasping her hands together. Funneh giggles. The warning bell rings, cutting off the girl's excitement. “Let’s go, I remember passing by our Chemistry classroom on our way here.” Gold takes Funneh’s hand and leads them to class.

What greeted them was a short blonde lady who already had an attitude before they took foot inside the classroom. “You’re late!” She shrieked. “But! Miss, that was the warning bell-“
“NO! Don’t you have any common sense? If you are ON TIME you. are. LATE! You girls should be lucky. It’s the first day. Go take a seat.”

The duo don’t waste any time, quickly sitting in whatever seats they can find. Funneh sits with Yumi, “Don’t take what she says too hard, she’s been on edge before you got here.” Funneh sighs after hearing Yumi’s reassurances. Gold sits by herself.

“Alright class! I am Miss Fletcher and I hope you all did your pre-classroom reading. If not, oh well! Today we are doing a lab. Follow the instructions in your textbooks!” Miss Fletcher starts the timer, “Ten minutes! After time is up, you will receive a grade for your performance.” The whole class scrambles to start work with some grumbling about not remembering the pre-classroom reading. As Funneh searches for the ingredients, Gold approaches her, “Funneh, have you seen Kyran? He’s supposed to be in here.”

“Oh yeah, Kyran. Maybe he’s running late.

“What if he doesn’t arrive, Funneh?”

“It’s probably for the best, Miss Fletcher is insane.”

“HEY! TOO MUCH CHATTER GOING ON!” Fletcher shouts

Funneh quickly grabs the remaining item she needs and heads back with Yumi.

After eight minutes pass, Yumi and Funneh look down at their creation, “It looks... Funky...” Funneh comments holding her nose. Yumi swats her hand as if trying to get rid of the stench, “We can’t present this to the teacher.” Without warning, Yumi takes the potion and runs out of the class! “Y-yumi?” Funneh calls out after her in shock, before Funneh can process anything Miss Fletcher is standing in front of her with a not-so happy expression.

“Where is your potion, Funneh?” Fletcher states in a controlled tone, clearly trying to hold back her anger. “I don’t have it! I’m so sorry, is there any way I can make this up?” Funneh squeaks out.

“NO! First, you’re late to my class, then you have the audacity to chat the whole time AND THEN you don't have a product to show me?!” Miss Fletcher booms

“Not my fault, you’re the most impossible teacher ever.” Funneh mutters underneath her breath.

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

“Sounds like an in-school suspension to me!”

“What-"

“Make your way to the office, EXPEDITIOUSLY!”

Funneh’s face turns red in embarrassment, the whole classroom is dead quiet as Funneh packs her stuff and heads out of the classroom.

“Stupid... rude… bit…” Funneh keeps on muttering down the hall. On the way to detention, she sees a bunch of students huddled together, whispering to each other about some ‘crazy fight video.’

Funneh rolls her eyes and knocks on the detention room door. Inside are two students sitting in the front row.

The dark blue-haired student holds an icepack on his head with blood visible on his split lip; the red-haired student sits right next to him with a black eye and his hoodie up.

“Kyran? Alec??”
