Work Text:

Intern hurried down the street, running with his current digitigraded legs, the pouring rain feom the sky hitting him and drenching his clothes in water. His mind racing as he panicked.

Im gonna be late for my very first shift– I just had to be a heavy sleeper this day! '  Intern was always a heavy sleeper.

Besides that, Intern finally arrived after running, and a few almost–slips in the rain, crashing into the hospitals glass doors and onto the carpet of the lobby..

Intern huffed with his nose, rubbing the top of his head. God, he probably looked like such a idiot right now..  He opened his eyes, looking up and seeing a out stretched, fuzzy black paw.

"You alright?.."

Intern looked at who the person was..

A black cat..?

In a nice clean suit and tie, with yellow eyes that seemed to pierce through his soul. Though they did look.. slightly kind underneath?...

"You gonna grab my hand– or.."

Interns ears shot up, embarrassed, grabbing his hand and pulling himself up with a huff..

At Interns full height, he was towering over the cat. It made the their ears flinch back at the sight.

"Sorry.. I'm uh– #####.. The newest intern!.." Intern smiled widely, putting a thumbs up.

"Mhm." Agent nodded. "Dr. Harlow told me about you."

"Who?.." Intern raised a eyebrow, one of his ears turning to the left in confusion.

"Ah– The head.." He paused, then shook his head. "Nevermind. I'm— ######, But call me Agent."

"Like a secret agent?.. That's cool!.." Intern tilted his head, his smile increasing.

Agent's ears folded back, This Interns expressions were quite.. Creepy. His whole face looked creepy, like a–

"So uhm– Do you know where I get started?"

That question broke Agent's train of thought, looking back up at the imposing intern, his beedy eyes just staring into Agent's. Agent looked away, clearing his throat and avoiding eye contact.

"Yea, uhm. I'm supposed to be the one training you.. You're a bit early so, I'll just show you around.."

"Early? I thought I was late!.." Intern chuckled nervously.  "Being late on your first job would definitely bad impression, wouldn't it?" Agent crossed his arms, expecting a answer.

"Oh- oh.." Intern swallowed. "Yea.."

"..."

Agent kept staring at him for awhile, then turned around, signaling him to follow.

"So, this is the office, or check-in. You obviously check in animals here, as stated in the name."  Intern nodded, listening to Agent as he explained this, taking note of it in his head.

"These are rooms one to eight." Agent pointed to the two sections across the hall from eachother. "Room one to five, are the basic, easy rooms. Six to eight are the more complicated ones. Luckily you wont work on any of these rooms. For you'll be working at the office, checking in patients."

Agent then walked over to two glass doors shut. "In there is the shop and Dr. Harlows office. The shop opens every shift, and Dr. Harlow doesn't usually like visitors interrupting him in his ' activities ' or whatever that means." Agent let out a sharp exhale, turning back to intern. "So I recommend staying away from this door."

Intern still had a confused look on his face, or whatever Agent could make out as the emotion confused.

"What's the matter?"

Intern stayed silent for a few more moments, staring at Agent, Which made the other uncomfortable, clearing his throat and snapping Intern out of the daze.

"Oh, Nothing. Nothing."

A few more seconds of silence between the two, before Agent just rolled his eyes and moved along.

Intern lacked behind for a second, staring at the door.

Why couldn't he recall who Dr. Harlow was?.. It seemed so easy to catch, but he just couldn't remember.

Intern stepped towards the door, reaching out for the knob. It wouldn't hurt to peek throu-

"Intern. Catch up."

Intern's ears flicked behind him, embarrassment spreading throughout his body. "Sorry.."

Intern turned around, catching up with Agent as they both went into the office.

Two other animals came in, one that looked like a moose, and the other a dog. They gave intern weird looks while passing by, probably because of his, you know, face..

But everything was going fine, until..

Shift 1.

Agent patted Intern's shoulder. "You ready?"

"Think I am. I mean, how hard could it be?" He smiled, trying to get agent to give him some reassurance.

Agent on the other hand, stayed quiet, looking at the rabbit.

"Nevermind..."

Agent turned to the equipment on the desk. "I'll guide you through the steps, then you do it on your own. Alright?"

"Alright..!"

A patient walked in, they were a green dog with spotted dots on them. "Hello. My name is Brett Sweeney... I'm checking in as a patient..." They plainly stated, having a neutral look on their face.

Agent pointed at the different equipments, helping Intern check the patient in.

As they finished, Intern waved goodbye, smiling.

"That wasn't that hard!.." Intern put his hands to his hips, proud of his accomplishment.

"Now on your own." Agent nodded to the next patient.

"Easy..!" Intern put a thumbs up, doing the next patient.

Soon, Intern's first couple shifts was over, he walked out of the hospital, the cleared out sun shining down on him as he started to walk home.

Something told Intern that there was certainly more to this Agent guy. How interesting.
