Work Text:
A pro hero’s work is never over.
It wasn’t just a job, it was a lifestyle–even when they were off duty, if someone needed help, a good pro hero’s first instinct would always be to help. They were always vigilant, just at different levels depending on the situation at hand.
That said, Ochako’s shift was over and she’d never been so glad to be done with it. The past week had been hectic, and Ochako had spent nearly the entire week outside of her home finishing case after case after case. She was so tired she could’ve laid down on the ground and slept for another week.
The clock on her phone read 19:37. She opened the door, making sure to be just loud enough for her wife to hear. Warm golden light spilled into the hall. Ochako closed the door behind her, taking off her shoes and jacket and putting them in their respective places.
“Ochako!” Himiko’s head poked out from behind the wall, her straw blonde hair loose around her.
“You’re back,” she said, smiling as Ochako groaned and rested her head on Himiko’s shoulder, melting into the embrace. It felt like her bones were turning into warm goo, which was a more pleasant experience than it sounded like. Himiko smelled faintly of floral perfume and her shirt was so soft.
“How was work?” Ochako mumbled into the other’s shoulder.
“It was okay, it was kind of slow, but Yashiro-san and I went to a really pretty cafe after and had tea, and we HAVE to go there sometime, Ochako, you’d love it!”
She untangled herself from Ochako, who was getting a little too comfortable in her arms.
“I got you a little something from there, but you’re gonna have to shower before I give it to you, Ochako,” she said, amused.
Ochako rolled her eyes and pressed a kiss to her temple, making her way to their bedroom to pick out clothes.
After showering, Ochako couldn’t help but feel sleepy. The water had been warm on her skin, her clothes smelled like their really nice new fabric softener and her hair like the new strawberry scented shampoo Himiko had convinced her to try. She made her way into their kitchen and was greeted with the sight of Himiko at the kitchen island, golden eyes squinting at her phone in a way that made Ochako sure it was her attending from work texting her (he was annoying) and hair in a loose ponytail, held up by Ochako’s pink clip.
She wrapped her arms around Himiko’s neck and rested her chin on the other’s head, and Himiko smiled.
“Hi.”
“Hi! I got us takeout while you were in there.” She said, pointing at a little bag with two boxes in it. It was from a restaurant that had just opened up nearby, and she’d wanted to go. The bag was also hot, and it smelled so good. Ochako could feel her stomach crying in relief. She was so hungry.
They had dinner, and then shared the chocolate brownie with ice cream that Himiko had gotten them from the cafe. They’d go there the day after tomorrow. Ochako didn’t have chocolate too often, but she liked to think it tasted even better when you didn’t have it for a long time. Himiko loved chocolate, so they always had some in the house.
They tried watching a movie, but Himiko fell asleep quickly. She did seem tired, though she wouldn’t say it. Ochako gently adjusted Himiko’s head on her shoulder and wrapped the quilt around them, sinking back into the soft couch cushions. The movie played in the background. It was a nice movie, but there wasn’t much going on, so she could feel herself starting to drift off, too.
She couldn’t believe she was here sometimes. After the war, she couldn’t see imagine herself becoming an adult for a while.
None of her classmates were the same, obviously, but she had been grieving Himiko’s “death” and everyone else around her was also miserable, so everything just snowballed to make her mental state worse.
But she was here now, and Japan was okay. That wasn’t to say people weren’t still affected, but new generations came after them. Crime rates were lower, and it was relatively peaceful.
Ochako could afford to spend money on things she wanted, like nice-smelling shampoos and cute keychains without feeling too guilty, though Himiko did have to convince her to treat herself to nice things sometimes when she felt like she was being greedy.
Her parents were settled too, and they even got along with her wife now–unlike when they first knew of their relationship. Ochako’s parents had resented Himiko for hurting their daughter. They didn’t try to stop them from dating, but they weren’t Himiko’s biggest fans. They came around, though, after Ochako spent every visit talking about the things Himiko did and how wonderful she was and how happy she made her.
Speaking of Himiko, she loved buying her things. When she was gifting Himiko cute bracelets or travelling with her or going to cafés with her, it never felt like a waste of money like it did when it was by herself. Himiko deserved all of it and more, especially after she was robbed of it all as a kid. Also, Ochako just liked seeing her adorable smile and the way her eyes lit up right after.
She could feel her eyes slowly closing on their own. She held Himiko closer and sighed. It was so warm. She couldn’t wait to sleep in tomorrow, after her stressful week. Two whole days free was a rare opportunity for a pro hero, so Ochako was going to make the best of it as well as she could. Then they’d go out somewhere, maybe a beach, maybe a shrine visit. Tsuyu had showed her pictures of a little snowy village she’d gone to with her family last year.
It looked beautiful, and Ochako loved the snow. Himiko did too, and her face always got super pink in winter (it was cute! but Himiko didn’t believe her) which was just an added bonus.
Ochako mentally resolved to book rooms tomorrow for the day after. She didn’t think there would be any crowds this time of the year, so that was probably easy enough. But for now, she laced her fingers with Himiko’s, turned off the movie and drifted off to sleep. She’d figure things out later. They had all the time in the world to do so, anyway.
