Chapter 1: Awkward Dialogue

Chapter Text

“Thanks for helping me with the critters today, Twilight,” Fluttershy smiled at first, but then noticed the mud in Twilight’s mane and in her fur. Feeling a bit awkward, Fluttershy lowered her gaze and rubbed her hoof against the ground. “I’m sorry things got out of hoof and we ended up getting so dirty…”

“Oh, pfft!” Twilight stuck out her tongue for a second and waved away Fluttershy’s worries. “Don’t worry about it! It’s not a big deal! I’d do anything for you, Fluttershy! You’re my best friend!”

With a smile forming on her lips, Fluttershy met Twilight’s gaze once more. “It makes me happy to hear you say that.”

Twilight beamed. “And it makes me happy to help you and to make you happy! And I love spending time with you, doing anything.”

“I love spending time with you too, Twilight.”

They stood there smiling warmly at each other, neither saying a word. All the tasks Fluttershy needed help with were complete, yet Twilight didn’t want to leave. And Fluttershy didn’t want her to leave. But as they stood out in front of Fluttershy’s cottage, the sun was fast falling, and they both had mud in their manes that needed to be washed out.

“Yep…” Twilight said, trying to carry on the conversation. “You know, I really like you, Fluttershy. It’s fun to talk with you and just hang out. And sometimes I feel like we’re even closer than best friends. And, I mean, who wouldn’t want to hang out with the prettiest mare in Ponyville? I really love you, Fluttershy.”

“I love you too, Twilight.” Fluttershy nodded, smiling, but then Twilight’s earlier statement hit her and a blush came into her cheeks. “Wait, you think I’m the prettiest mare in Ponyville?”

“Oh, uh…” Twilight’s face flushed red. She stared off into the sky and gesticulated wildly with her hoof. “Eheheh… I mean, you are, aren’t you? Though I didn’t mean it in a weird way. And when I said I loved you, I didn’t mean that in a weird way either.”

“A weird way?”

“Oh, you know. I mean, not, like, in like a romantic way or anything. Because I’m not gay and we’re, you know, just friends.”

Though her eyes shone sadly, Fluttershy nodded. She scratched at the ground again, seeming nervous, and when she spoke she took a very robotic tone. “It is very normal for friends to say they love each other.”

“Yes!” But Twilight hurriedly added, “Oh, but, not that there’s anything wrong with being gay! But I’m not! Unless you are?”

Cheeks still red, Fluttershy’s eyes darted around. She covered her mouth with her hoof and shifted her weight on her legs. “Oh, um… Definitely not if you’re not…”

“Oh, me?” Twilight said, as if responding to the query for the first time. “Yeah, I’m totally definitely not… if you’re not.” Twilight stared up at the sky and rubbed her front hooves together. “Though now that you mention it, I do find you to be really attractive. You’re probably the most beautiful mare I’ve known.”

“Well, uh, about that… I mean… I do think you are also very pretty, Twilight.”

“Oh! You do? Well, I mean… If it was for you, Fluttershy, I could be… like that. You know… gay…”

Looking up at Twilight, Fluttershy donned a small smile. “I… kinda feel the same way. If it was for you, Twilight, I could also be… gay…”

“Really?!” After an excited outburst, Twilight reigned it in. “I mean… so… you… are?”

Fluttershy met Twilight’s gaze, and the question hung in the air for a long time. Until finally, Fluttershy said something.

“Do you wanna kiss?”

“More than anything.”
