Chapter Text
The night air was cold and crisp against Intern's fur. they had their hood over their ears as they walked through the damp parking lot. the lights inside the hospital flickered before they even stepped foot inside. They knew if they were intern here, they'd need to suck up the uneasy feeling the building radiated. the building alone gave them chills down their spine. they tugged at their hoodie strings outside the building. Just stuck in their head before they even entered the building.
As Intern stared up at the building, fidgeting with their hoodie strings, an employee in a security outfit came outside? The wolf looked bored, just, patrolling. Intern noticed him having a taser on his belt, along with a camera and some medical supplies like burn cream and eye drops. ears perked up and listening for anything suspicious, his tail was wagging slowly behind him. He looked around and made eye contact with the Intern. The two stared at each other. The security officer couldn't tell if this was an anomaly or not. he's never seen an animal like Intern. his hand drifted to his taser instantly.
"What's your business here, are you a patient or, what??" He asked, trying not to sound as confused as he was. quite a hostile first impression if you ask me.
"I. I'm actually an intern? this is the Animal Hospital, right??" Intern asked back, sounding nervous as they let go of their hoodie strings, letting the hood fall off their head and the cold night air brush their now less drooped ears. Security took a sigh of relief, moving his hand away from his taser. he looked way less panicked around the intern now that he knew that Intern didn't want to eat everyone.
"Yes, this is. come on in." Security nodded his head to the door, not even bothering with the automatic door and just. Opening it, walking through casually.
Intern should've probably taken that as a red flag, but followed anyways. The second they stepped foot into the building, Intern noticed that this place was an mess, an absolute mess. There was an orange moose rushing across the hallway, holding at least three medical supplies in His hands, his teal jacket flowing behind him like a cape. How does one move that fast in medical scrubs? next they noticed an exhausted looking Nurse mopping up this green... stuff... Off the floor. It looked like an absolute texture nightmare, but they immediately rushed to help the Nurse. I mean it's not a nurse's job to clean. shouldn't the one who doesn't have a designated job do that???
"I could help with that??" Intern offered the Nurse. the Nurse's droopy ears swayed behind her as she glanced away from the green substance and up at what looked like to be yet another new employee with no medical history. Her tail was curled up away from the floor. Her scrubs stained with the green goop, a long sleeve white shirt poking out from underneath the uniform. the collar specifically popped out.
"Oh?? That would be lovely.!" Her voice came out soft, her smile as bright as the flickering fluorescent lights above the two. The Surgeon rushed from room eight as the intern took the mop.
"You're free- great- Room eight now!" The surgeon was rushing, already grabbing the nurse's wrist and rushing her to room eight as well. poor girl could barely keep up but rushed with Surgeon anyways. leaving intern alone to clean up the slime from the ground.
The mop sloshed on the ground, barely picking up the green slime as it grew and touched the intern's white shoes. God this was nauseating. The slime felt like it had a mind of its own and just kept growing. Intern wanted to puke. They didn't like slimy objects at all, weather it was back in 2020 when slime was a huge deal, dishes in a sink, the Goo they're currently cleaning off the ground, and anything that belongs inside an animal. Let's just hope Surgeon won't need any help... but they knew it would be over soon. Just. Mopping up the mess. and wouldn't you know it? Soon enough that floor was Goo and Slime free! The intern looked around for something else to do, noticing the camera watching rooms one through five having little shocks coming out of it. Must be broken like most the other camera's in this place. either their really understaffed or they just, don't care? Either way intern grabbed a ladder from the employee closet and climbed up to see the issue, turns put the camera was just positioned weird, easy fix! They moved the camera and the sparks stopped; the camera turned back on. and Intern could hear Security laughing from across the hospital. Security was watching the camera's, waiting for a patient to walk in, when the down camera suddenly turned on, all Security could see was Intern's confused face up close. he couldn't help but laugh at the sight, watching Intern climb down and walk out of camera view to return the ladder.
"You're doing good for your first day." Security pointed out as Intern walked to behind the desk. Intern tilted their head
"I am? I mean I struggled to clean that green stuff and that camera was an accident-"
"Kid. You're doing good." Security pushed, Intern just nodded, even if their head was saying the opposite.
Thats's when Surgeon rushed into the room. Nurse following slowly. Surgeon grabbed the cup of coffee and drank it all in one drink. needing that caffeine and quickly.
"Woah woah- careful Sur." Security said, the Surgeon looked back at Security and sighed
"You need a break... I can handle it...!" Nurse insisted, letting Surgeon sit by the coffee machine despite the protests. she left the three to go treat some of the patients in the waiting room. Surgon admittedly sat down, looking up at the flickering lights. he didn't want to take this break. but he needed this.
Security looked back at the lost looking Intern and stood up from the front desk. "Why don't you check in the patients while I go make sure there's nothing dangerous outside?" Security suggested. Surgon immediately shoots that suggestion down like it's the anomality itself!
"We are NOT throwing the newbie under the bus?! Are you crazy! Last time we did that with the last Intern she let in Three anomalies?! Who says he won't do the same!?" Surgeon countered Intern looked between the two.
"actually it's they-"
"Relax Sur, I'll be back quick, plus you'll be here to watch them!" Security interrupted. Surgeon sighed, not wanting to argue. his sanity was too low to actually really argue.
"Fine."
"Fine."
...
Intern felt the tension high in the room, they looked between the two animals, Security's ears slightly drooped. Surgeon crossing his arms, stained gloved hands gripping his own arm. The intern sat down at the desk slowly, waiting for more arguing that never came. eventually Security stood up from the camera's and fixed up his slightly crooked hat, ears straight up.
"I'll be back. Surgeon, since you think Intern will screw up, make sure they don't, okay?" Security said sarcastically, putting his Taser in his beltloop and leaving the two alone as a patient walked in.
The two didn't say anything. the Intern suspected that Surgeon wasn't fond of them.
In walked in the patient, a droopy eared rabbit with almond eyes and messy fur. "Hello, my name is Rebecka..." The patient mumbled, Surgeon glared at the patient... they looked normal... "I want to check in as a patient..."
"Okay, let me take a picture... and..." Intern took a picture, waited for it to develop to look at it, seemed relatively normal, they just looked sick. Intern printed out a nametag and handed it to them. "Head on down to room 3, We'll have our nurse check you out." They said with a wide smile. Surgeon was. surprised from the Intern's halfway decent performance.
"This place gives me the creeps..." Intern heard Rebecka mumble as they headed to their hospital room. and honestly Intern couldn't agree more. Security came back as they were walking to their hospital room. looking back at Intern, who looked proud of themselves.
"See? They've got it fully under control" Security bragged proudly. Surgeon just rolled his eyes and stood up from his chair, calling his break over. Left without a word. "Damn, who stuck a cactus up his ass, am I right?" Security tried joking, laughing at his own joke till he just saw Intern confused. then he just sat down by the cameras. The next patient who came looked like a cop, a duck cop. Security's eyes lit up, then sank seeing the cop's injury. "Officer Duckman? You, okay?" Security asked from the window. Officer Duckman was pressing a blood-soaked paper towel into his shoulder, looking like he's in pain. the officer glanced back Intern, then spoke to Security.
"Stab wound. bastard ran off." Officer Duckman coughed "Room, please." His voice came out strained, almost pleading. Intern didn't even bother checking if the officer was an anomaly, just quickly gave the cop his nametag and checked him in as soon as possible. the cop stumbled to a room as soon as possible, surgeon also rushing to the room to treat the officer
Intern looked worried. who would just stab a cop and run...? They shook their head. they can't get this sick over a little blood if they're going to be working/interning at a hospital.
They soon watched the cop walk out with a bandage on his arm and an ice pack on his head. all the employees heading behind the counter for the end of the shift.
"Okay guys... today wasn't that busy of a day." Surgeon mentioned in relief, then he glanced back at the Intern. "...Thanks for not being as stupid as some of our previous interns."
"Previous interns? Where are they now-"
"OKAYYY GUYS." Security interrupted before the topic could shift to the previous employee losses. "You all did amazing, Hope to see you tomorrow, don't be like our secretary and not show up for a week." Security praised, throwing away the emergency supplies, putting up his camera and his taser. Nurse nodded and took off her medical hat. Surgeon just left to go sleep till his next shift.
Next shift... Guess we can intern here again? What's the worst that could happen?
