Work Text:
“Wolfie!!”
“Oof.” Enid stumbles as her favorite vampire nearly tackles her in the courtyard. “Hey, Yokes.”
“We thought you were lost forever.”
“Yoko.” Bianca sighs and shakes her head.
“What? I’m just saying we were worried!”
“You could’ve just said that!”
Enid pulls back with a laugh. “It’s fine. I…thought so too.”
“But your knight in shining armor saved you from the great fortress that is the Canadian wilderness.” Yoko wiggles her eyebrows.
The werewolf flushes and glances behind her, relieved to see Wednesday is out of earshot, still talking with her family.
“Did she save you with true love’s-”
“Shut up!” Enid slaps her hand over the vampire’s mouth.
“That wasn’t a no.” Divina smirks.
“Yes it was!”
Bianca snorts. “Didn’t you miss us, Sinclair?”
“Not at all.”
“You sound like Addams.”
“Oh my god-”
“Are you wearing her jacket?” Yoko squints at the dark leather coat.
“Well it’s not like I had that many clothes with me in Canada!”
“Mhmm. That’s what they all say.”
“No one says that!”
“You get my point.”
A five-foot shadow appears, naturally drawing everyone’s gaze.
“Hey Addams, welcome back.” Bianca nods at the seer. “Fencing class hasn’t been the same without you.”
“I expect you’ll have to get used to losing again.”
“Speaking from experience I see.”
Wednesday’s eyes narrow. “No.”
“So how did you change our dear werewolf back?” Yoko’s eyebrows raise over her sunglasses.
“A spell.”
“So not true lo-OW!”
The vampire rubs the ribs that Enid just elbowed and turns to her friend with a glare. “Remember you have alpha werewolf strength!”
“Oh, I know!”
“Which you know could come in handy-”
“Anyway!” Enid interjects loudly. “We have to go unpack. But it was nice to see you all!”
“Mmm sure.” Yoko snickers. “Unpack.”
The werewolf raises her elbow again.
“Kidding!” The vampire’s arms fly up to protect her ribs. “Also, I have 3 weeks worth of class notes for you both.”
Wednesday scowls. “I’d just as soon attend a kpop concert than use your inaccurate notes.”
“I’m sure wolfie can arrange that if you’d like.”
Only people that truly know the Addams would notice the blush under her murderous glare.
Which means everyone there can see it.
“Okay!” Enid squeaks, feeling heat on her own face as well. “Wends, let’s go.”
She rushes out of the courtyard, leaving the raven to follow after sending one last scowl at the other outcasts.
They trudge their way up familiar steps to the top room of Ophelia Hall.
“Gosh.” Enid runs to her bed and flops on it. “I missed this place.”
“It’s only been three months,” Wednesday states dryly.
“Yeah, but it felt like a lifetime.”
The two look eyes across the room.
Enid sits back up. “I wish we didn’t have to go right back to school.”
“You just said you missed this place.”
“I did. But…not for the school.”
Wednesday takes a visible inhale.
A floorboard creaks in the doorway.
“Agnes!” Enid yells.
The redhead appears out of thin air. “Looks like someone’s finally using their werewolf abilities.”
“Well when you’re stuck as one for three months you kinda have to.”
A rare look of guilt crosses the vanisher's face. “Right.”
Enid softens immediately. “Hey, thanks for helping Wednesday find me.”
Agnes looks almost shy. “I only sent her a few pictures.”
“Still. Thank you.”
“What do you have about the case?” Wednesday cuts in.
Enid looks over in surprise. “You guys are already working a new case?”
“There’s been several disappearances while you’ve been away.” Agnes pulls out a folder with some news articles and photographs she’s gathered.
The seer takes it. “Have you gotten any evidence from the victim’s houses?”
“I’ve looked, but there hasn’t been much to find. I haven’t checked the most recent one though.”
“Do so tomorrow.”
Agnes nods.
Enid puts her hands on her hips. “And what will I be doing on this case?”
Wednesday gives her a sharp look. “You and I will talk with Sheriff Santiago.”
“Good.”
The seer sits at her typewriter, marking the conversation as complete.
She expects two things to happen next. Agnes to leave. And Enid to go back to her side of the room.
But only one of them occurs.
“So since you said no to that list, I-”
“What list?” Enid looks up in confusion, wondering why Agnes followed her to her desk.
Yes, what list? Wednesday’s stomach clenches at the question.
Agnes tilts her head. “The one of boys-”
Wednesday grips her pen hard enough to snap it.
“Oh!” The wolf loudly cuts the redhead off, glancing nervously at her roommate’s back. “Yeah. No.”
“Right, like I was saying,” Agnes continues. “Since you said no, I was wondering if you wanted to study together sometime? I could help you catch up on all the gossip you missed while you were gone!”
The first thing that jumps to Enid’s mind is suspicion. Which she thinks is completely valid after being kidnapped, nearly murdered, and constantly ragebaited by the underclassman for the better part of last semester.
But Agnes’ expression lacks that usual mischievousness to it. If anything, she actually looks overeager. Much like she does when doing lowly case work for Wednesday.
Then it hits her.
Agnes is trying to befriend her. The list of boys was a first attempt at that before Enid went missing for three months, and now she’s trying a different angle.
“Um…sure!”
For the most part, Enid is genuine about it. She figures she owes the vanisher for the help she provided in her rescue, and they had bonded a good amount in the last few weeks of the semester before she went missing.
“Great! I can tell you about how Ajax got all the nightshades detention for a week.”
“Right…” Enid nods hesitantly, a bit concerned that the redhead’s sly smirk is already back and she has no idea why.
“I’ll see you on Tuesday? I know you have a free period in the afternoon.”
“I’m not even gonna ask how you know my schedule better than I do.”
“Probably for the best.” Agnes gives a devious giggle as she fades from view. “See you then!”
The werewolf waits until she’s sure the vanisher has gone out the window before muttering under her breath. “That was weird.”
Wednesday doesn’t respond. In fact, she’s hardly moved for the last five minutes. Except to glower further at her blank case notes.
Enid doesn’t notice though, too distracted by unpacking her things.
But the vanisher still standing outside their window notices.
And it makes her wicked grin go even wider.
----------
“So that went…well.”
“I should say so,” Wednesday agrees.
“I was joking!” Enid huffs. “We just got escorted out of the police station! We’re lucky Sheriff Santiago didn’t throw us in a cell!”
“That would’ve been unwise on her part.”
“I’m just saying, she seemed pretty serious about us staying out of this investigation.”
“Then she should’ve solved this case sooner,” Wednesday drawls. “Besides, now we know the location of the next missing person whose identity hasn’t been released yet.”
“Yeah, about that. I think she was lying.”
The raven looks over to the wolf in confusion. “Why?”
Enid shrugs. “I could hear her heart rate speed up when she talked about the victim. Like maybe she wasn’t telling the whole truth.”
Wednesday suddenly feels incredibly exposed for reasons entirely unrelated to the case.
“I see. I’ll have Agnes look into it.”
“Does that mean we have extra time?”
Wednesday rolls her eyes. “If you’re asking to stop at the bakery, just say so.”
“Hey, sometimes it’s the coffeeshop!”
“And is it this time?”
“...No.”
Wednesday pulls open the door of the bakery and walks to the counter. “Two strawberry croissants.”
Enid raises a surprised eyebrow. “You’re having one?”
The seer takes the bag from the cashier and holds it out. “They’re both for you.”
“Awww, Wends-”
“Don’t.”
“But what if I want to?” Enid leans in with a wolfish smirk.
Wednesday lets out a puff of air and shoves the pastries in her roommate’s hands. “Then consider this your last meal.”
Enid takes the bag with a giant smile on her face. Loving how adorable it is that the fearless Wednesday Addams can’t even meet her eye.
“Your empty threats are cute.”
Wednesday snatches the croissants back and walks out the door.
“Hey!” Enid runs after her. “Give them back!”
“No.”
“But I need sustenance for our next mission!”
“We don’t even have a next mission.”
The wolf grabs the raven’s arm and brings out her best puppy dog eyes. “Please?”
Wednesday’s responding scowl is close to a pout, but her hand is already raising to return the pastries to the annoyingly endearing dog in front of her.
“Need some help?”
Agnes pops into view and snatches the bag from the seer’s hands and holds it out to the wolf.
Enid jumps back. “Just because you can do that, doesn’t mean you have to all the time!”
“Hmm, what happened to those werewolf instincts?” Agnes has an uncharacteristic smile on her face, as if playfully teasing rather than full-on ragebaiting.
Something which both roommates immediately pick up on.
“Well, they don’t really work on amateur threats.” Enid teases back, grabbing the croissants.
“Ouch.” Agnes holds a melodramatic hand to her chest.
Wednesday looks back and forth between them with a murderous glare on her face. Then shoves a note at the vanisher. “Go to this address and see if Santiago gave us false information.”
Agnes takes the paper with a nod, but immediately turns back to Enid, pulling something out from her bag while doing so. “I picked up those new textbooks you ordered at the mailroom for you.”
“Oh my gosh, thanks!” The wolf takes the books enthusiastically. “I’ve been so behind on everything starting the semester three weeks late. I actually forgot I ordered these!”
“Just trying to help.” Agnes purposefully ignores the dark eyes boring into her skull.
“You’re the best!” Enid doesn’t even register what she’s saying, just happy for the assistance.
Wednesday’s fists clench at her sides. “We need the information now, Agnes.”
Enid whips her head toward her roommate, surprised by the tone.
The vanisher grins, this time with that classic ragebaiting undertone in full force. “Of course.”
She disappears from view. Leaving Wednesday glaring at air.
“Hey.” Enid tries to catch her best friend’s gaze. “You okay?”
“I’m fine.” The raven starts stalking back toward the school.
“You know I can tell that you’re lying,” the wolf mutters under her breath. But she shoves a croissant in her mouth and follows her roommate all the same.
--------------
“Oh my gosh, I’m so tired.” Enid lays her head in her arms on the table.
“Perhaps if you didn’t immediately rejoin student council, gala planning, school newspaper, and dance troupe all at once you wouldn’t be,” Wednesday says dryly.
The wolf tilts her head to look up at the raven with those damn puppy dog eyes again.
“You remembered all the clubs I joined?”
“You talk about them daily,” the seer mutters. But Enid doesn’t need werewolf vision to see the slight blush on her ears.
“Still. You remembered.” Enid smiles sleepily from her spot on the table. “Besides, how are you not just as tired? You go to bed after me and get up before!”
“I sleep efficiently. Whereas you growl and grind your canines.”
“You haven’t complained about that in a while.”
“I wasn’t complaining,” Wednesday says without thinking.
“Oh? Is the great Wednesday Addams evolving?”
Now Enid really doesn’t need her werewolf vision to see the blush.
“Don’t be foolish,” the seer grumbles. But she pushes a piece of paper toward the wolf all the same.
“What’s this?” Enid squints at the page.
“Notes from botany.”
“Oh! Thanks, but I took my own-”
“You fell asleep halfway through.”
Enid blinks. “What? No, it was only like two minutes at the end.”
“It was at minute 28.”
“...and you just let me sleep for the other 32??”
Wednesday looks away. “You seemed to need it.”
“Oh my god.” Enid buries her face back in her arms.
“You didn’t growl if that’s what you’re concerned about. Nor did anyone else notice.”
Except Yoko. Which Wednesday chooses not to mention because she doesn’t wish to relive the knowing look the vampire gave her when she realized what was going on.
“Well, thanks.” The wolf smiles softly and takes the notes. “You’re the best, Wends.”
“Am I?” Wednesday asks before she can stop herself.
Enid’s brow furrows. “What does that mean?”
“Does someone need a furraccino?”
Agnes appears with the iconic drink.
“Oh my gosh, yes!” Enid holds out her hand eagerly. “You’re literally a lifesaver, Agnes!”
The redhead passes the drink over while Wednesday glares at it as if it personally insulted her family name.
Enid immediately starts guzzling down the mountain of caffeine and sugar. “Ahh. I feel better already!”
“It hasn’t even gotten into your bloodstream yet,” Wednesday mutters.
The wolf doesn’t pay her any mind as she keeps pounding the drink.
“Do you want to walk to class together?” Agnes asks. “My chemistry class is right next to your potions one.”
“Oh! Uh...” Enid glances at Wednesday who usually walked her to class, but the seer seems intent on just scowling at the table. “Sure?”
Agnes grins. “We better get going then.”
“Yeah!” The wolf stands up and gives one last look toward her roommate. “Wends, do you want to come?”
The raven still doesn’t look up.
“Okay…” Enid frowns. “Well I’ll see you later.”
It’s only when the two outcasts are almost out of sight that Wednesday finally looks after them.
“I see your little fangirl has switched sides.”
The seer’s scowl shifts to Bianca Barclay.
The siren snickers. “Which you seem totally cool about.”
“I don’t care that Agnes is otherwise occupied. If anything, it’s nice not to have a constant shadow.”
“Oh it wasn’t Agnes I was talking about and you know it.”
Wednesday clenches her jaw. “I do not care either way.”
Bianca rolls her eyes and sits at the table. “Yeah. I search in the woods for three months for people I really don’t care about too.”
“Enid saved my life.”
“So did I.”
“Hardly.”
“I’m just saying, you should talk to her.”
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Has anyone told you that you’re a bad liar?”
“No one that remains living.”
“Enid’s living.”
Wednesday stands up abruptly. “Careful, Barclay. Or I will have a word with Petropolus on your behalf.”
The siren’s smirk fades.
The raven begins walking away.
“That’s kinda just proving my point!” Bianca calls out.
Wednesday doesn’t turn. But the hesitation in her step is enough.
--------------
It’s Friday.
And Wednesday hears kpop music.
And giggling.
At a decibel which makes her assume the entire wolf pack must be over, despite the fact they hadn’t been there all semester.
But when she barges into the room prepared for social warfare, she only finds two people inside. Huddling together on Enid’s bed. Painting their nails.
The werewolf looks up, an immediate smile coming to her face. “Hey, Wends! Want to join in on girl’s night?”
The seer walks cautiously to the colorful side of the dorm. More than a bit disconcerted to see Agnes lounging in her pajamas wearing her normal cheshire grin.
“What are you doing?” Wednesday asks sharply.
“Getting the most glitter-filled manicure ever!” Agnes holds up her new sparkling nails.
“That is not what I was asking.”
“Oh?” The vanisher sits up in interest. “Then what were you asking?”
Wednesday bites her cheek as she glances at Enid who is looking at her with a curious expression. “I simply meant that you two have never had a girl’s night before.”
Enid shrugs. “We were just waiting for you to get back from your trip into town. How’s Sheriff Santiago by the way?”
“She wasn’t there. I had to deal with her deputy.”
“Yikes. I think I feel bad for him.”
“Don’t. He was useless.”
“I’m sure.”
“And he didn’t know his place.” Wednesday turns her severe gaze back on the vanisher.
Agnes tilts her head with a twinkle in her eye. “Well, guess you’ll have to try again tomorrow.”
“Or maybe I could dismember them today.”
Enid looks back and forth between the two girls, starting to realize the seer wants the guest out of their room. “Uh, Agnes. You should probably go. I have a lot of homework to do.”
The redhead redirects her sly expression to the werewolf. “Right. Homework.”
“Agnes.” Enid’s cheeks are slightly pink, but her tone leaves no room for debate.
“Fine. My job is done for today anyway.”
Both roommates scowl at that. But before they can comment further, Agnes fades from view and slips out the window.
“Phew.” Enid turns off the music and collapses back on her bed. “I don’t know how you handled her last semester. Once she latches onto you she really doesn’t let go.”
“Only if you let her,” Wednesday mutters, going over to her side of the room.
“Right…” The wolf frowns as the seer disappears into her closet to change. When she emerges again, Enid sits up in her bed. “Do you want to watch a movie?”
“I thought you had a lot of homework.”
“Oh I do. But maybe I want to procrastinate?” Enid hopes the ‘with you’ is implied.
Wednesday glances at her desk. She has a lot of homework as well. And she hates procrastination.
“Fine.”
“Yay! Just for that, I’ll let you choose the movie.”
“A dangerous proposition for someone scared of Monsters Inc.”
“I told you I was four when I first saw that!”
“You said seven.”
“...close enough.”
Wednesday raises an eyebrow.
Enid huffs. “Oh come on. Nothing you can throw at me is scarier than fighting an actual hyde, right?”
“Let’s test that theory.”
20 minutes later, the alpha werewolf is hiding behind her largest stuffed animal. “Okay, this is so much scarier than fighting a hyde!”
“We’re not even past the opening scene.”
“And that poor girl has been stabbed like 10 times already! How is she even still alive?”
“The attacker has ineffective technique and slows their movements for dramatic effect.”
Enid rolls her eyes. “Why did you even choose this movie anyway? This doesn’t seem like your type of thing, despite all the gore.”
“Pugsley made the family watch all of these as a child. This was the most tolerable in the set.”
“Is it because that girl looks like you?” Enid points at the screen.
“She doesn’t look like me.”
“She totally does. If you weren’t broody and braided all the time.”
Wednesday’s responding scowl turns the terror on the wolf’s face into amusement. So much so that she finally lowers the stuffed animal back to her lap.
It’s then that the seer notices the new nail polish on her roommate’s fingers.
“You like them?” Enid asks shyly, detecting the staring. “Agnes picked the colors.”
Wednesday forces back the immediate ‘No’ on the tip of her tongue at the mere mention of the vanisher.
She observes the nails keenly. The palette is more subtle than the previous color combinations the wolf has used. But it’s the lack of one color that really catches Wednesday’s eye.
Her color.
Which used to be conspicuously displayed on the wolf’s ring fingers. But has now been replaced by light purple and green.
“They are…suitable,” Wednesday offers with great effort. Annoyed that such a change even bothers her.
Enid tucks a piece of hair behind her ear. “Thanks.”
A scream pierces the air.
The wolf turns back to the screen. “Oh my gosh, really? The killer is going after this girl in the hospital now? And why is he moving so slowly??”
“I told you it’s for dramatic effect.”
“Yeah, well, it’s dumb.”
“Now you see why there’s no need to be scared.”
“Whatever.” Enid waves her hand. “I’m just hoping this girl makes it out of this movie alive. She’s too pretty to die.”
The temperature of the room suddenly rises ten degrees.
“I mean!” The wolf’s eyes are comically wide. “Not that that…means…anything.”
Enid buries her face back into the stuffed animal for an entirely different reason now.
Wednesday just sits there stiffly. Hoping the werewolf is distracted enough not to hear the muscle pumping overtime in her chest.
Another scream erupts from the laptop.
Suddenly both roommates are absolutely fascinated by the movie.
As time goes on, Enid gets more invested and less scared. But every so often something makes her jump.
Until one time, she automatically reaches for the closest thing to her. Which just happens to be Wednesday.
“Sorry!” The wolf pulls her hand back as if burned.
She is never going to let the Addams choose another movie.
Except maybe that’s untrue.
Because 10 minutes later, the killer is pulling out their knife again.
And the wolf’s hand is reaching for the raven’s again.
And this time, Enid doesn’t pull away.
And Wednesday doesn’t make her.
-------------
“Oh my gosh, wolfie, you’ll never believe what happened today!”
“Bianca asked Ajax out.”
Yoko huffs as she sits down next to her friend. “Dang. How did you already know?”
“Agnes told me,” Enid mutters sheepishly.
“It literally happened like five minutes ago!”
“She’s made it her mission to keep me up to date on all the latest gossip apparently.”
“Which you sound thrilled about.”
The werewolf sighs. “I mean, it is kinda nice to have it for my blog. But she can just be a bit…invasive.”
Yoko snorts. “That’s putting it lightly.”
“Yeah…” Enid grimaces. “Anyway, what did Ajax say? Agnes didn’t give me all the details.”
“Oh you know, he floundered and was like ‘oh that’s what you’ve been trying to ask this past week’? And Bianca was like ‘more like this past month, but yeah.’”
Enid snickers. “Yep. Been there, done that.”
“But now you’ve moved on to bigger and better things.” Yoko peers over her sunglasses. “Or should I say, smaller and deadlier.”
“Shut up!” The werewolf shoves the vampire in the shoulder. “It’s not like that.”
“But you want it to be.”
“But it’s not!”
“Why though? You literally just have to ask her!”
“Oh come on, have you ever tried to ask out Wednesday Addams?”
“Believe it or not, no.”
“Well news flash, it’s not easy! Especially if you don’t want to get murdered in the process!”
“That would be true for the rest of us. But for you? Total piece of cake! I mean, she searched in the woods for you for months!”
“Ugh, I know.” Enid drops her face into her hands. “But she’s been acting sort of weird recently.”
“How so?”
“I don’t know. Just weird.”
“Who’s been acting weird?” Agnes appears in front of the friends across the table.
Enid sighs. “No one, Agnes.”
“Hey, kid.” Yoko points at the vanisher. “Stop stealing all my good gossip! I need something to get me through my 46th year of high school!”
“How old even are you?”
“64.”
“Guess you’re getting slow in your old age.” Agnes smirks back.
“Oh no.” Yoko holds up a finger. “You may be able to ragebait this poor werewolf in circles-”
“Hey!” Enid objects.
“But I’ve lived long enough to learn every trick in the book. Including how to make a vanisher’s clothes remain invisible when they reappear.”
Agnes blanches.
“That’s what I thought.”
“She doesn’t ragebait me,” Enid grumbles.
“Wolfie, I love you. But you’re the most ragebaitable person I’ve ever met.”
“That’s not!!-”
Yoko raises an eyebrow.
“...true.”
“So convincing.”
A familiar shiver goes down the werewolf’s spine. Causing her to turn in excitement.
“Hey, Wends!”
The seer walks up to the table with suspicion in her eyes. “I thought you had student council.”
Enid shakes her head. “They cancelled it last minute luckily. Gave me time to catch up on the latest gossip.”
Wednesday scowls at Yoko and Agnes. “Is that so?”
“Mhmm. Did you know Bianca asked Ajax out today?”
“Finally.”
The whole table looks up in surprise.
“I am not blind."
Yoko smirks. “Neither are we. Right, Agnes?”
The redhead grins. “Right.”
Both roommates shoot them dirty looks.
“You guys are the worst best friends ever,” Enid mumbles.
“You love us,” Yoko insists.
Wednesday clenches her fists and begins to turn away.
“Hey, where are you going?” Enid calls out.
“The sheriff’s station.”
“I’m coming with you.”
“That isn’t necessary.”
The wolf deflates a bit. “Oh, but-”
“You can stay here with me and Agnes if you want, wolfie.” Yoko’s eyes sparkle behind her glasses.
“Okay-”
“No, she’s accompanying me,” Wednesday snaps.
“Oh!” The excitement returns to Enid’s features. “Really?”
The seer nods a bit too desperately.
Yoko snickers under her breath. “Now I know why she’s been ‘acting weird’.”
Enid glares at her friend. “Bye.”
“See you later, Enid.” Agnes waves slyly.
Wednesday stomps off while the werewolf shoots them one last exasperated look before following.
As soon as they’re out of sight, Yoko points at Agnes. “I know what you’re doing.”
The redhead suddenly looks nervous. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Your poker face could use some work. But I’ll let it slide since I support the cause.”
“You do?”
“Of course. I love a good roommates to lovers story as much as the next lesbian. And those two perfectly match each other’s freak. But if you ever tell them I encouraged you, I will personally bury you in my coffin at the bottom of the lake. Clear?”
“Crystal.”
“Good.”
-----------
Enid sighs from where she sits at her desk.
“Agnes, how many times do we have to talk about this? I know you’re there!”
The girl pops into view. “Oops.”
“Ah!” Enid nearly jumps out of her skin at the sight.
The vanisher is dressed in bright pink. A color Enid is sure the girl has never worn in her life.
But even more unnerving, the redhead has blue streaks in hair.
“What the hell! Is that my hair dye??”
“You said you thought I’d look good with blue hair.”
“That doesn’t mean you can just steal my hair dye!!”
“It seemed open to interpretation.”
Enid rubs her forehead. Now she can see why Wednesday got so upset when the vanisher raided her closet last semester. It truly is disconcerting.
“Look, Agnes, we’ve talked about how it’s important to be your own person.”
“Maybe this is me though.” The redhead’s lips curve up in a sly smirk.
“I think we both know that’s not true. But whatever. What are you even doing here?”
“It’s Thursday.”
Enid glances at her watch. Has another week gone by already?
“Sorry, I can’t practice today, I have to go meet Wednesday for a project in a few minutes.”
Agnes looks genuinely crestfallen. “But we always practice your routine on Thursday. And your performance is coming up soon!”
“Fine. Just once.”
The vanisher grins and starts the music.
They fall into step alongside each other. It’s not a paired dance this time. So Agnes simply performs beside Enid, mirroring the movements.
The wolf gets lost in the routine quickly. After her time in the wilderness, dance had become an important way for her to manage stress and anxiety.
It’s so freeing that she doesn’t even realize that the music loops. Or that she’s started all over again. Or that she’s closed her eyes.
Until she feels familiar ones on her.
“Wednesday, hey!” Enid stumbles out of a pirouette, only to notice Agnes had already stopped dancing long before.
Traitor.
She grimaces at Wednesday’s steely expression. “Um, we were just practicing my new routine.”
“It is a quarter past five.”
“Oh, really??” The wolf checks her watch again. “Shit. Sorry. I didn’t realize we were dancing so long. We usually run through my routine on Thursdays.”
Enid realizes a split second too late that not the right thing to say. Judging by how Wednesday’s countenance goes from mildly agitated to downright murderous.
“I see.”
“Wends-”
“Then by all means continue with your routine.”
The seer turns to go, but the wolf catches her by the arm.
“Hey, come on, I just lost track of time. I didn’t mean-”
Wednesday rips her arm away. “Now who wants to spend all their time with their fangirl mini-me?”
“What? I-It’s not like that.”
The raven looks pointedly at the bright pink outfit Agnes is wearing.
Enid winces. She really should’ve made the girl change earlier.
“She’s not my fangirl mini-me! We’re just friends. And there’s actually no need for her to be here anymore, right?” The wolf shoots the vanisher a look.
Agnes gets the hint and waves her hand. “See you around, bestie!”
“Wash out that hair dye!” Enid yells.
But the girl has long since vanished.
Leaving the werewolf alone with a murderous raven.
“Wends, I’m sorry I-”
“You do know she tried to kill you.” Wednesday stands with crossed arms in front of their window.
Enid raises an incredulous eyebrow. “Well it’s not like that stopped you from being her friend!”
“She is not my friend.”
“Fine. Your gopher then.”
“Didn’t you call her a sycophantic loser?”
“People change!”
“She hasn’t.”
“Well people’s opinions of people can change!”
“That seems a fast turnaround considering you spent nearly the entirety of last year threatening her with your claws,” Wednesday snaps.
“She helped you find me while I was lost for three months, so I think that’s a pretty good reason for that turnaround!”
Enid realizes a split second too late that was not the right thing to say either.
“I see.”
“Wednesday-”
“Then enjoy your time with your new bestie.”
The wolf rushes to block the path to the exit the raven is marching on. “Wends, you do know you’re my best friend-”
“Of which you seem to have many.” Wednesday tries to push past her roommate, but Enid blocks her way again.
“But you’re the most important one! You’re the most important person in my entire life. A-And if you’re doubting that, you should know that I-”
“That’s not what this is about,” the seer says sharply. “I do not require your validation.”
“Then what do you require?”
“Nothing!”
“Stop deflecting!”
Wednesday huffs at the wolf looming in front of her, realizing she’s not going to make it to the exit.
Enid brings out her pleading eyes. “Wends, please just-”
“She brings you coffee.”
“...So? She does that for you too.”
“Not anymore.”
“Oh, well I can have her start doing that again if you-”
“She painted your nails.”
Enid frowns at her fingertips. “Do you not like them? Because I can repaint-”
“She has a routine with you.”
“Only because she practically forced it upon me! I’ve been trying to subtly shake her all semester!”
“Yes, I could tell that from her blue hair.”
“I didn’t tell her to dress like me!”
“You didn’t stop her either.”
“She literally did the same thing with you!”
“So you see the irony.”
The wolf throws up her hands. “I don’t know what you want me to say! I don’t know why she’s suddenly latched onto me like she did you last semester!”
Wednesday scoffs. “Really?”
“She just wants to be friends!”
“I know.”
“So why are you so upset?”
“Because she wants your attention, Enid!”
The outburst hangs in the air.
Enid blinks.
Once.
Twice.
Wednesday sees her opening and bolts for the exit.
But unfortunately she’s not a werewolf.
So she ends up getting pinned to the door rather than running through it.
“Enid. Let go.”
“No.”
“Enid.”
“Fine!”
The wolf releases her grasp on the raven’s arm to place both hands on the door behind her instead. Trapping her even further.
Their eyes blaze into each other for a moment before Enid’s soften in a way that has the seer digging her nails into the wood behind her.
“Wednesday,” Enid murmurs. “You know you’re my best friend.”
“Repeating yourself isn’t necessary-”
“But you aren’t listening!”
Wednesday crosses her arms indignantly. “Then do enlighten me.”
Enid pulls back to run her hand through her hair. “When I say you’re my best friend, I mean you’re really my best friend!”
“That isn’t descriptive-”
“You’re the one that buys me croissants. And takes notes for me in class. And chooses movies you know won’t scare me too much-”
“I don’t see how-”
“You’re the one I want to work cases with. And have a routine with. And give all my attention to-
“I told you I don’t require validation-”
“You’re the one that hunted me down!”
Enid’s hands slam back on the door.
“Not Agnes. Not Yoko. Not my fucking family. You, Wednesday Addams.”
“You aren’t stating anything I don’t already know!”
“You’re the one that saved me,” Enid whispers.
Wednesday freezes and looks at the ground. “You saved me first. And as you said, Agnes helped-”
“No.” The wolf shakes her head. “You’re the one that saved me.”
The seer still doesn’t look up, so Enid lowers her head so they’re mere inches apart.
“And you’re the one that I really, really, want to kiss.”
Brown eyes snap up.
But Enid is only looking at lips.
“Please, Wednesday I-”
The raven stands on her toes to silence the wolf. Connecting their lips together softly. As if unsure she’s doing the right thing.
Enid doesn’t let the doubt linger though.
She presses the seer back against the door and cups her cheeks in her hands. Kissing her roommate in a way that makes her inner wolf howl. Like it's been waiting for this moment since being found in the wilderness.
Wednesday meets the kiss with the same ferocity this time. Acutely aware that her treacherous heartbeat must be pounding in the werewolf’s ears.
She doesn’t care though. Not as Enid’s tongue brushes against her bottom lip. Not as strong arms tug her closer by the waist.
Not even as Agnes appears outside their window, grinning from ear to ear.
“Leave, Agnes!” Enid half yells, half groans as Wednesday grabs onto her collar.
The vanisher’s giggle is audible through the glass.
“God, she’s going to be even more insufferable now, isn’t she?” Enid hums as cool lips find her own again.
“I will see to it that she isn’t.”
The wolf smiles and starts to nip at the raven’s ear. “You know you can’t murder a 14 year-old, right?”
“As if you didn’t attempt to do so multiple times last year.” The comeback lacks its usual sharpness as Wednesday’s eyes slip closed.
“Still. It’s cute that you were jealous.”
“I wasn’t jealous.” Wednesday shoves the wolf away on principle.
“Hmm really? So you just memorized all the things Agnes and I did together just because?”
“I have a good memory.”
“You do,” Enid concedes. “But we both know you wouldn’t waste brain space on that if you didn’t actually care.”
“You’re mistaken-”
“You don’t like the new nail polish do you?”
“I never said-”
“You miss the black?”
“...No.”
“You know I don’t even have to be a werewolf to tell when you’re lying.”
Wednesday digs her nails lightly into the back of the wolf’s neck. “Is that so?”
“Y-Yeah.”
“I wasn’t jealous.”
“Right. So Agnes and I can still practice my dance routine on Thursdays?”
The nails dig harder now.
Enid smirks in victory.
Wednesday scowls and attempts to kiss the smirk away. But after a few unsuccessful attempts she pulls back with a defeated sigh.
“Perhaps I…did not appreciate your attention being taken away so readily by others.”
The wolf lets out a light chuckle. “Yeah?”
“I don’t spend three months searching in the woods for just anyone, Enid.”
Blue eyes immediately soften. “I know.”
Wednesday tries to look away, but Enid catches her chin.
“And I don’t sacrifice my humanity for just anyone either, Wednesday.”
The seer takes a deep inhale and smooths her fingers over where she left crescent marks on the wolf’s neck.
“I know.”
“Good.”
They both lean in for another soft kiss. But just as Wednesday starts to tug at Enid’s bowtie, the wolf pulls away with an agitated look on her face.
Wednesday frowns at the distance, but then her features harden as she realizes the reason for it.
They’re still not alone.
In a flash of werewolf speed, Enid opens the window, grabs the still invisible Agnes, and pulls her back into the room.
“Seriously?” Enid growls.
“I’m sorry!” Agnes squeaks, popping back into view. “I’m just happy my plan worked!”
“Your plan??”
The redhead looks properly sheepish.
Enid looks at Wednesday and back at Agnes. “You mean you’ve been following me around this whole semester just to make us both crazy??”
“I also really wanted to be your friend!” Agnes exclaims genuinely.
“Oh my god!”
“I’m sorry!”
“Are you??”
“I mean…I was sort of successful in both things, right?”
Enid pinches the bridge of her nose. “Fine. Maybe. But you owe me and Wednesday coffee for like a year!”
“Only a year?”
“And you will never be raiding either one of our closets again!”
“Oh trust me, blue hair isn’t my style.”
Wednesday pulls out a hidden knife. “And if you step foot in this room uninvited one more time I will personally flay your corpse.”
Agnes grins. “Don’t worry, I don’t actually want to see you guys making out all the time.”
The werewolf’s claws slip out while the raven raises the knife.
Agnes’ grin only grows wider. “Yoko wasn’t kidding when she said you guys match each other’s freak.”
“What?” Enid’s tone is actually dangerous now.
The grin on the redhead’s face drops as she realizes her mistake.
“Nothing!”
“Agnes-”
The girl vanishes from view and books it out the door.
“AGNES!”
Enid throws her hands up in aggravation, but is quickly distracted by Wednesday grabbing her crossbow and heading toward the exit.
“Where are you going?”
“To murder a 14 and 64 year-old.”
Enid catches her arm. “Wait.”
“But-”
The wolf silences the protest with another deep kiss, smiling as Wednesday melts into it.
“I don’t like when your attention is taken away either,” Enid whispers.
“It would’ve been good target practice though,” Wednesday grumbles. But she drops the crossbow in favor of tugging her roommate back in.
When they finally part, Enid squeezes the seer’s hand. “Don’t worry. I’m sure Yoko will be thrilled when I tell her Agnes slipped up.”
Wednesday admittedly looks intrigued at the prospect. “Let’s see if Tanaka is actually one to make good on her threats.”
“Ironic.”
The seer huffs and tries to pull away, but Enid tightens her grip.
“I’m kidding. Stay.”
Wednesday pouts just because she can.
But the blue puppy dog eyes she receives in return prevent her from moving anywhere else for a very long time.
Agnes doesn’t end up at the bottom of the lake in a coffin.
Much to Wednesday’s chagrin.
But she does end up having to deliver daily coffees to three people for the next year.
And honestly, she’s okay with that.
They are her friends after all.
