We had Lando Norris on the show, talking about his new single, Drop Dead, and his new album, you seem pretty sad for a boy so in love, that is due to be released on the 6th of April.

GREG JAMES: Could you tell us more about the writing process for Drop Dead?

LANDO NORRIS: I wrote it all in one night. My boyfriend was just in my house and I thought ‘he looks like an angel’. And then my mind went ‘like the ones in Versailles?’ and I was off. I wrote it all in one night, just sat on the floor in front of him with my guitar and said exactly how I felt. 

GREG JAMES: That’s so sweet. Can you tell us more about him?

LANDO: Oh. Uhm, we broke up. That’s sort of the concept of the album, I suppose. It starts with Drop Dead, which I think is a very innocent song - sort of a feeling of a crush, before you really get to know someone - and ends up travelling this journey of the whole relationship and how it developed. 

GREG JAMES: That’s very interesting, I think. 

LANDO: Yeah, it was after we came up with the title for the album that I thought of the idea. I thought it would be really cool to split it into two sections, one that is ‘a boy so in love’ and the second being ‘you seem pretty sad’. So the section of love songs is Drop Dead until The Cure, which is both the first sadder song and also my next single.

GREG JAMES: Could you tell us how exactly you came up with that name?

LANDO: Well, I was at my boyfriend’s house, and his best friend was there. We were just chatting - something about a girl or a guy that the best friend was in love with - but when my boyfriend left the room, his best friend looked at me and said ‘You know, Lando, you seem pretty sad for a boy so in love’ and I was like ‘that’s it’..]

“drop dead was the very first song I wrote on this album. It was very domestic, to be honest, because - and I have talked about this before - I just got the line ‘looking like an angel on the walls of Versailles’ while I was with my boyfriend, so I grabbed my guitar and started writing it right in front of him. 

It’s a song that’s about the process of crushing, and falling in love in the very first steps of a relationship. It’s the picture perfect, loving start to a relationship. It’s like it's golden, while you still see this person as a God who has deigned to spend time with you rather than a person who is there for you the same amount as you are there for them.”

“He does know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’, and I always found it hopelessly endearing. I think that ‘Just Like Heaven’ is such a romantic song but I never really understood the concept of it, the ‘you’re just like a dream’ part. But as soon as I laid eyes on this man, I understood.

Sorry, that’s sappy.”

“I wrote ‘stupid song’ as I was falling in love. I wrote it to express what I was feeling, because I had never really been in love at all, I had only imagined what it might be like from the sidelines, so before this guy, I really didn’t know what it was like. 

I remember playing it to Carlos, because I wrote the chorus without him, and him just looking at me. He was like ‘Oh.’ and I was like ‘what? What are you saying?’. He just went ‘Lando, you’re in love.’”

Lando:
“I wanted to include the lyric ‘without a brake’ because I wanted to show that there is some danger in being in love. That, if there is no brake on that car, there will eventually be a crash. That part was actually added after writing the other songs, when me and Carlos were going back and changing parts of the love songs to add more danger into them, and to add more of an idea that it was going to crumble. 

But, yeah, the original idea of the song was that some things can’t be put into words, and that sometimes, feelings exceed language, and that I did want him more than any stupid song could ever say.”

🎵 Track 3: honeybee

Lando:
“I think ‘honeybee’ is a very raw and emotional track. It’s all about doubt in a relationship, but it’s sugarcoated in the hope that love brings, and the hope I had that we would never split. That’s why I called it ‘honeybee’ - because honey is essentially natural sugar and natural sweetness, and I thought that was similar to the natural sugarcoating we often give love.”

“It’s also a track about caring for someone so deeply that you can’t help but imagine the heartbreak that would come if they chose to leave you. You care about them so much you want them to stay here and now, and you don’t want them to go, but you’re still doubting and you’re trying to convince yourself that you’re not doubting.

🎵 Track 4: maggots for brains

Lando:
“This one is very close to my heart because it took so long to make. I think it was very hard to put into words, how I felt - and still feel - when he’s away. And he was away a lot, because his job really demanded it. ”

Lando:
“That lyric isn’t even true. If there was a tragedy, his work wouldn’t let him leave. Sure, he would try his best and probably perform badly at work, but he wouldn’t come over. So I think that’s another part of the hopeful and wishful theme of this album: hoping he would deliver when he couldn’t."

🎵 Track 5: u + me = <3

Lando:
“This is the cutest song on the album. I wrote it for our first anniversary, and while it seems like a song that would come very early in a relationship, it was something that I wrote as I got to know him better, and as we gained more trust in one another. I think this one slowly took shape over the course of a few months. I was writing very slowly with this album, and it pissed Carlos off.”

Lando:
“The line about Cadbury was something we did. My boyfriend was Australian - he still is Australian, he’s just not my boyfriend anymore - and we had a deal that if I brought Daim bars and the Biscoff bars from the UK, he’d bring me Tim Tams.”

🎵 Track 6: my way

Lando:
“I think, looking back, this was a little bit dramatic of me. My boyfriend’s best friend was very close to him, and they had been for a while because they had been… in the same area of job? I’m not really sure how to phrase it. 

Actually, the album title came from the guy this song is about. I was visiting my boyfriend when he came into the flat we were in, and just started ranting about the guy he was into. Then he looked at me when my boyfriend was out of the room and said ‘you know, Lando, you seem pretty sad for a boy so in love.’ That was helpful.”

Lando:
“So, I was being a bit dramatic. They were just best friends, but I think it was very difficult, because even though they worked in different companies, they worked in the same field, and got to travel together and be together a lot of the time when I couldn’t be. And that pissed me off.”

🎵 Track 7: purple

Lando:
“I really like this track because I think there are so many double meanings you could take throughout. I think the idea of two lines forming a circle could be taken as both a positive idea - that we’re moving together and we’re sort of in sync - but it could also be interpreted as something that is closed off. A circle never travels, but two lines keep going forward. So it could also represent a halt in development and learning.”

Lando:
“I like this lyric a lot as well, the thought that you can melt together and become one with someone, but within that, you will always be stained by them. You can’t see purely in the sight you’ve always had because it is now tainted by another person’s colour.”

🎵 Track 8: the cure

Lando:
“I remember going into the studio being very scared to write this song. I was scared of admitting what I felt, because I had really thought that this guy could be the antidote.

I would usually come home and play the new songs that I had written or added to, just to show him what I had done that day, but I couldn’t play the cure to him. It felt too personal, but I also knew that it would wreck him, because he did try so hard to suck the toxins out.”

Lando:
“I love the bridge, because I think it’s so interesting going into this, marking that it’s the first of the sad songs and explaining that it’s not enough to only have one person. I think a main part of this song is accepting that my boyfriend couldn’t fix me by himself. I had to get actual help, instead of just hoping. 

And there’s the theme of hope again.”

🎵 Track 9: begged

Lando:
“I hated writing this song. I didn’t want to accept that I was begging for whatever I wanted from him, but I knew that I was. And I do think that the best songs are always the ones you hate writing, or that you’re scared to write, because they’re so full of raw emotion.”

Lando:
“I didn’t want to admit that I was trapped. I liked my life, writing songs and coming home to a perfect guy who mostly made me feel great. “This was another song that was very very difficult to write. I realised that my boyfriend was what was dragging me down, was what was the catalyst to my depression, and I didn’t get out of bed for a week. He would’ve noticed, but he was across the world, working in Asia and coming back to his base in the UK. We lived in Monaco.”

“I didn’t like writing the chorus, and it upset me because it was so easy to write. It was like the whole song had built up inside me over months and months and all I had to do was let it out.”

Lando:
“This song was different from the rest, because it was written half during the relationship and half after he ended the relationship. I think after we broke up, it was easier to write about leaving and being unhappy in the relationship because it was already over.

It felt like the doubts I had been having were allowed to come out, and I was finally allowed to not try and convince him I was okay, but I also wanted him back. It was bittersweet. I was filled with relief, but I was filled with grief.”

Lando:
“I was aware that he loved me a lot. I knew that he cared for me more than I could imagine, and I knew that the reason he had ended the relationship was because he wasn’t ready to take it public. Because he is a public figure, and he wasn’t ready to come out, and he knew that I was tired of hiding this huge secret. 

So I wish he loved me less. Because if he loved me less, he wouldn’t have cared. He would’ve still been here.”

“This was so fun to write. I had such a good time thinking about people that I would and wouldn’t date, and watching Carlos do the vocals for the bridge was the best thing ever. He hates doing vocals.”

“This song is… it’s good. It’s a good song. But I think it’s wrong. It happened when me and Carlos were finishing up ‘stupid song’ but he got bored and picked up a guitar and played a few chords. And they were perfect. They made me feel so excited, so I knew we had to write a song. 

But the lyrics are wrong. The bridge is the honest part. The rest of it was fuelled by rage that covered my view of the relationship. The reality of it was that I still loved him and I was annoyed that I did. Do.”

Lando:
“I love the bridge. I wanted to convey how empty it felt after he left, and how desperate I was for him back - or not even him back, maybe even just an apology. I really feel the ‘why’d I even try at all’, because all the effort I put into that relationship was null and void, because he’s gone. He’s gone forever now.”

INCIDENT NUMBER ONE: album set to be released on OSCARS FUCKING BIRTHDAY??? coincidence? i think NOT. dates for album releases are usually specifically chosen to be on FRIDAYS idk why but THEYY ARE and yet. this was a sunday. also, we previously know that lando likes to set his album release dates for a specific and often specail date relating to the vibe or theme of the album OR MAYHAPS the MUSE (aka oscar)

INCIDENT NUMBER TWO: daniel fucking riccardo this sneaky bitch. asking oscar ‘have you ever been to japan?’ so FUCKING innocently AS IF THEY DONT GO THERE TO RACE EVERY YEAR??? this also happens to be A LYRIC in ‘drop dead’ and the thing that made this moment GOLD and even noticeable was how UPSET/SHOOK oscar looked after it was mentioned. like it was a reference… to his EX PERHAPS????

INCIDENT NUMBER THREE: how fucking shit oscar raced IN JAPAN. this has two significances: 1. being ‘have you ever been to japan’ making the WHOLE LOCATION remind him of his ex and 2. being that lando dropped ‘the cure’ that friday. this song is heartbreaking. its incredible. it’s literally perfect. and YET imagine being the person who is trying so hard to suck out all the toxins in the cure. imagine spending 6 months thinking that it was your fault and suddenly a song RIPS that perspective from you and replaced it with the idea that the other persons sadness was what stained the relationship in the first place and this was what caused it to crumble. bc babe. that’s a HUGE pov change. it rattles you. it perhaps causes you to crash into a wall on the first lap of a race you qualified p7 for

INCIDENT NUMBER THREE: the guess who comment. very very similar to the japan comment , just danny ric mentioning a lyric from a song. but now we know it’s not random. now we know it’s about lando norris. and we know that oscar knows the lyrics. ‘i used to play a game in my head when id date a guy, tally up the girls that he’d fucked til i’d start to cry’. emotional. heartbreaking. after saying it , OSCAR looks like he’s about to crY

INCIDENT NUMBER FOUR: car/f1 refenences throughout the album. 

1. ‘shooting stars, racing cars’ in honeybee
2. ‘im a car speeding down the boulevard without a brake’ in stupid song
3. ‘don’t think i’ll meet my future husband at this bar in silverstone’ in expectations 
4. this is a BIT of a stretch but ‘you’ll be miles away tomorrow’ oscar is constantly travelling due to his job?? so?? maybe??
5. the same idea as above applied to maggots for brains - oscar is away a lot, so when his ‘baby goes away’ and lando has maggots for brains is a lot?? bit of a stretch again IKKK
6. ‘floppy hair’ again a bit of a stretch LOTSSSS if people have floppy hair. but oscar’s hair. is so. floppy.
7. ‘i like your big sister, she has your same face’ oscar has many sisters. and all of them share the same face. just saying. 

INCIDENT NUMBER FIVE: the song my way was innocent enough by itself. it was a nice pop rock song, a GREATTT sound, but nothing to particularly tie it to oscar. until. logan sargent. ‘omg lando norris wrote a song about me’ did he now. diddddd he. and who is logan sargent? oscar’s best bro. there are pictures of them sharing clothes. as referenced ‘you’re posting another pic in clothes that i know are his’ 

INCIDENT NUMBER SIX: the Video. i’m not going to go in depth into this bc i think that it’s incredibly invasive and awful but i did want to touch on it both to say DONT WATCH IT AND IF YOU SEE A POST WITH IT REPORT IT and  to say that he does reference a lot of the album and its lyrics while saying he misses a man and wants him back
