Chapter Text
I remember it like it was yesterday.
Watching from afar, Dante Guzmán didn’t show a hint of fear on his face as he walked down that dark hall towards his father’s office. He could feel the way his stomach twisted with disgust and he picked at the skin around his nails.
He stared at the dark woods as he approached the door. His mind started to wander, hoping whatever his father needed would be quick so he could go back to his mother. Reaching up a hand to the wood, he hesitantly knocked.
The doors swung open as two men in suits stood by, holding the doors open.
Dante never knew why his father had bodyguards—not like he needed them.
He paced, a thud following him as his eyes stayed locked on his fathers husky and robust frame.
Gabriel Guzmán. Gabriel sat at his desk, eyes lingering on Dante. He seemed to be irritated by his “late” arrival.
“Took you long enough,” Gabriel spat coldly, causing Dante to hold his breath. The two stared for a beat.
Then, Dante saw a girl from the corner of his eyes, and he turned to see her fully. A young girl, possibly around his age, with black hair and tan skin.
“I’m not done talking to you,” Dante’s dad hissed. His eyes snapped back to his dad as a loud thud rang out..
Dante didn’t respond, instead he just nodded his head and straightened his back.
“Do you know why I called you here?” Gabriel asked slowly, eyes watching Dante almost like he was making sure every thread of cloth was in place.
“No,” Dante murmured before perking up, “...why did you call me here, Father?”
“I called you here because you’re now sixteen years old and you still haven’t presented any powers,” he announced. His tone was growing more aggravated by the second. Dante bit his lower lip, holding in anything that could possibly show weakness.
“Thankfully I’ve found a solution,” Gabriel declared. “Meet Katelyn Miller, your new bodyguard, that way you at least have some form of protection.” Gabriel’s hand moved, presenting Katelyn, she gave a friendly smile and wave.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Dante,” Katelyn hummed sweetly. Dante couldn’t help but stare. Her hair as dark as a raven and her smile as bright as moonlight. With a cough erupting from Dante’s throat he spoke, “The pleasure is all mine.”
After so long, he finally had another person on his side, and it would change his life in every way possible.
