Chapter 1: baby boy

Chapter Text

Hinata never pictured herself as a mom.

She hadn't even believed it could become something real.

A material wish.

Unlike some girls in her clan, she never played with dolls or spent her time daydreaming about how nice it would be to grow up, find a good husband, and have a big family. Other girls swore they'd become brilliant kunoichi, diplomats, and ANBU.

She admired that a sense of purpose could stir so easily in the hearts of girls her age. But in her early years, all her energy went into surviving and quieting the constant feeling of failure sitting on her shoulders.

Being born heiress to the main branch of the Hyuuga clan always felt like too much. A duty that demands everything from you before you even have the breath to ask why.

Small as she was, that duty always demanded discipline and perfection from her. A level of skill so high not even the most flawless human being could reach it.

In a world shaped by warfare, alliances, and power, the members of Konoha's clans were key pieces in the operations run by the great leaders of the Fire Country.

Being a ninja wasn't the burden. What cut deeper than the exhaustion of endless days sharpening her taijutsu were the pressures of the role itself.

Training day and night. Dodging the critical stares of other clan members, arbitrary in their hypocrisy and their certainty of being right. No warmth to be found among faces and attitudes hardened by tradition.

"Hinata, you don't stand a chance."

"Hinata-sama, you'd be better off giving up."

"Hinata, preserve the clan's honor."

"Such a shame you're the heir."

When she was placed on Team 8, a quiet sadness settled into her. She would rather not be dead weight, didn't want to hold her teammates back. But the pessimism she'd built up finally cracked once she experienced real friendship and partnership with the other two.

With Kiba, she learned to lighten up, to find humor in ordinary things, and to enjoy a good joke.

With Shino, she learned gentleness in small things: his care and knowledge of insects and the skill of truly listening.

From Kurenai, she got more than ninja training. She got a real education in self-knowledge and self-worth: warm hugs, encouraging words, and a maternal presence to lean on.

Even through exhausting missions, many of them terrifying, Kiba, Shino, and her sensei were always safe ground, people she could trust, the place where she first understood what family meant.

Then she found her sun.

Outgoing, intense, honest, and loyal, someone impossible not to be drawn to because of the sheer force of his generosity and persistence.

Naruto was loud and stubborn, but no matter how many times he was turned down, he refused to quit. He kept trying, again and again and again. Watching his determination and courage made her admire him even more and want to become someone like him.

Together, they found a place where they belonged.

A quiet kind of love that didn't need many words for either of them to know how the other felt. A single glance was enough to say everything.

From acquaintances to teammates to friends to a couple, all the way to marriage, they walked a path full of challenges and deep affection. Always circling each other with a bond neither could quite explain.

Eventually the feeling became impossible to ignore, and after the mission to the moon, they started dating. Together they discovered the beauty of life, the intensity of passion, and the quiet certainty of having found the right person.

Less than a year into dating, they got engaged. Not long after, they married: a joyful, generous, unforgettable ceremony surrounded by everyone who mattered to them. Holding Naruto's hand in front of the Hokage Monument, she knew a beautiful future lay ahead of them.

And they were eager for whatever life had in store.

One ordinary day, an unusual drop in blood pressure raised a question in her mind, so she went to the hospital to settle it.

What started as a simple blood test to check her overall health turned into news that left her speechless when Tsunade announced, beaming:

"Ugh, I probably shouldn't act like this. It's a little unprofessional, but you're pregnant, dear!" The blonde pulled the Hyuuga heiress into an ecstatic hug, clearly moved. "Do you already know how you're going to tell Naruto?"

"I don't even… Hinata reached for the plastic chair beside her and sank into it, trembling. Her heart stumbled, her vision blurred, and her stomach turned.

Being a mom? Have a baby?

Hinata liked children and had always been good with them. During Konoha's reconstruction after the devastation of the Fourth War, she'd spent time and care volunteering at the village's regional orphanage.

Still, having a child of her own was a strange thing to put into words.

"Isn't this what you were hoping for, Hinata?" A little calmer now, the former Hokage sat beside her, noticing how hard the news had hit her, and rested a hand on her thigh.

"I… I was hoping for it. It's just…" The young ninja gave a nervous smile, staring down at her long lilac skirt. "Obviously I was hoping for it. We're not being careful, and, um, it's just…"

"I understand." Tsunade looked at her fondly. "Being a mom feels like too much, doesn't it?"

"Yes..." Hinata swallowed hard.

"You're still so young. I get it."

"It's strange, Tsunade-sama."

"It's a lot to take in. Do you feel sad?"

"I'm happy. It's just..."

"You don't have to be so hard on yourself. Nobody is born knowing how to be a mom. It's something you learn as you go. Caring for another person is a skill you have to practice with humility. You'll never have every answer, and that's fine. What matters most is being consistent in your love." The older woman spoke gently. "But one thing I'm sure of: this baby is very lucky to have you as a mother." She touched Hinata's chin softly, her lavender eyes shining with happiness. "You're already a wonderful mother, Hinata. I believe in you."

"Thank you, Tsunade-sama." They sealed the moment with a hug. "Thank you."

That same day, Hinata turned over a dozen ways to tell her husband the news, and in the end settled on something sentimental. She stepped into the bathroom and said,

"Naruto, we need to talk. It's critical."

He lowered his toothbrush, worried.

He'd just gotten back from a mid-length mission in a village that had recently been pacified and was still tangled in diplomatic problems.

Seeing so many orphaned children with nowhere free to simply be kids had left a deep impression on him.

"Naruto?"

"That's your name, isn't it?"

He paused, setting the toothbrush down on the ceramic sink. A thousand questions were racing through his mind.

"Did I do something wrong?" he asked instead of answering. He knew her well enough to hear the anxiety in her voice, as though she'd been carrying something that had been eating at her.

"You haven't done anything wrong. I don't know where that's coming from." Hinata crossed her arms in front of her, raising an eyebrow.

"You always call me Naruto-kun, but you dropped the kun, ‘ttebayo. Did I upset you somehow?" He wiped toothpaste off his mustache and sat down on the bathroom lid. "I'm listening."

"This isn't a relationship check-in."

"Okay..."

"You need to stop reading those weird self-help pamphlets Sai keeps giving you." Hinata laughed through her nose, hands on her hips, feeling a bit of tension in her calf.

"One of those pamphlets is precisely what taught me how to act on a first date. That's pure, top-notch knowledge. You wouldn't understand, miss."

"Oh, of course. My mistake." She let out a small laugh. "Anyway, I still need to speak with you.”

"Is it the towel on the bed? I swear I won't do it again. I SWEAR!"

"You always promise, and you never learn," Kurama grumbled, unable to get any rest with Naruto, seconds ago, pestering him about the other Tailed Beasts' secrets.

"I'm not upset about that. I'm not upset at all." She kept smiling.

"If you're not upset and this isn't a check-in, why haven't you called me Naruto-kun? Are you hungry?" He rubbed his cheek, wincing. "That usually sets you off."

"I've been well fed, thankfully. Thank you." Hinata kissed his forehead, grateful for the fried chicken curry he'd brought home just for her. She'd noticed her appetite had gotten even sharper lately.

"I know…" Naruto gave a sly little smile, his tone far more suggestive than the worried one from a moment ago. "Want to have a quick talk in the shower? I've got the time and the energy, ‘ttebayo."

"You just got home!" She laughed and gently pulled his hand toward her belly. "I'm pregnant. Three weeks. I found out today."

"Whoa." He just pulled her into a hug, his face frozen for a second. When it finally sank in, he kissed her cheek over and over, full of devotion, and she felt him crying against her. "I'm so happy. So, so happy. Thank you, Nata."

Hinata felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She'd been quietly worrying it wasn't the right time to get pregnant, not with Naruto's training and his focus on becoming the next Hokage.

"You don't have to thank me, love." Even with tears in her eyes, a small laugh slipped out. "It's a team effort, isn't it?"

He let go of the embrace and rubbed at his damp eyes. Tears kept spilling from that blue gaze, matching the size of his joy.

He'd have a son or daughter to call his own, to play with, to raise, to teach about life, someone who would make every sacrifice his parents made worth it.

"That's the best news anyone's ever given me, ttebayo." He sniffled and wiped his eyes. "And you? How are you feeling?"

"Happy. A little overwhelmed, but happy." She meant it, and he took her hands gently. "We'll manage, right? I don't really know what it means to be a mother, but I want to try my best."

Hinata barely remembered her mother, but her elegance and warmth had always stayed with her, a kind of anchor that helped shape her against her father's coldness and rigidity.

She'd promised herself she wouldn't pass that same discouragement on to her children.

"It'll be fine. Trust me." Naruto pulled her close and kissed her cheek. "I don't know what it means to be a father either, but I know we'll do our best. Right?"

"We will, love." She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, sure of the new step they were taking together. "I just want to ask you for one thing."

"Ask me anything." Neither of them looked away, both still restless from the news.

"Can you keep this a secret for a few days? At least until I've had my first checkup and told my father."

"I… um, well..." He gave a sheepish grin that made her laugh. "I'll try my best, ttebayo."

"Good. Thank you for understanding."

"Don't mention it." They shared a quick kiss, then Naruto frowned, looking a little troubled. "Actually, I was just thinking. Your dad's not going to beat me up over this, right?"

She laughed softly.

"Why would he beat you up?"

"You're pregnant, right?" He touched her waist, wetting his lips. "I got you pregnant."

"So? We're married. We're not doing anything wrong, love. It's completely natural."

"Ugh, those eyes of his give me chills, ttebayo. That old man gets more wrinkled and scarier every year." Naruto joked, and they both burst out laughing.

Naruto did his best and kept quiet, and by the time they finally went in for the first prenatal appointment, he'd earned his approval and made a point of telling everyone the big news himself: he and Hinata were expecting the newest member of the family.

At the ultrasound, once they found out the baby's sex, the couple could hardly contain their happiness. They didn't need to think long about a name.

Boruto.

Honoring Neji and how much he'd meant to both of them was something they'd always talked about whenever pregnancy and family came up in conversation.

When Hinata told her father, still nervous about how he'd take it.

She was stunned by how gentle his words were and by how his lavender eyes, always so guarded, lit up with excitement at the thought of his first grandchild.

"I'm so happy for you both," Hiashi said, sounding moved, still taking in what he'd just heard. "I hope you have a healthy pregnancy and an easy delivery."

"Thank you, Otou-san." Hinata bowed her head respectfully to her father, sitting at the table with her hands wrapped around her teacup. "I felt it was important to tell you about my pregnancy in person."

The clan leader stood, came around to face his eldest daughter, and made an unusual request.

"May I hug you?"

"Of course." She let him, and they embraced a little awkwardly, both quietly grateful they were trying to rebuild something between them.

Hinata was always thankful her pregnancy had gone smoothly. Eight months under medical care, odd food cravings, and, at her insistence, she still managed a few short, local missions up until she was five months along.

She wanted to feel useful, to spend her remaining time with Team 8 before the baby arrived, and to honor her title as a ninja.

Thereafter, Kakashi-sensei made her leave official, and luckily she and Naruto got to enjoy the last stretch of the pregnancy together.

Hinata wished he could have stayed home a little longer, but she understood the weight of his responsibilities as a hero and a future leader.

A mix of anxiety, happiness, worry, and anticipation carried them through the following months.

When the cherry blossoms began to bloom, welcoming spring, Boruto was born, and a new kind of happiness took hold of her.

Such a tiny little thing, so full of light.

The moment she saw those blue eyes for the first time, love, and devotion swept through her chest, even sharper than love at first sight.

The soft crying that echoed through the Ninja Hospital brought tears she hadn't even known she had in her. Everything about their bond felt like magic: the feel of her baby's skin against hers, how perfectly Bolt fit into the curve of her arms, the small, satisfied smile he'd give while nursing.

Bolt was, unquestionably, an adorable little person, and having him was one of the greatest blessings of her life.

Hinata considered herself to be two different women: who she was before Boruto and who she became after.

Naruto had changed her life in countless important ways, but becoming a mother settled something deeper in how she saw herself, both as a woman and as a person.

Adjusting to first-time motherhood and a quieter, more domestic life took patience and resilience, but there was real joy in discovering, day by day, all the small particulars of a baby.

Colic, fussiness, tantrums, upset stomachs, sleepless nights, and the occasional tear of feeling unprepared. But it was all worth it the moment she woke up to those little blue eyes and messy blond hair peeking at her from the crib with a sleepy, toothless grin. It was pure.

Boruto was her companion, sharing more than just a name with his father, already picking up his charm.

Loved by everyone, the firstborn drew attention wherever he went.

Congratulations over Boruto's birth came from every direction, even from people neither of them knew. Gifts kept arriving at the Uzumaki house without end.

Every time she took him out for a walk, to run errands, to visit her sensei and friends, or even to the doctor, the little one would wave and blow kisses to everyone they passed. A trick Naruto had taught him.

Hinata loved her son's birthmarks, the same ones his father had, and his wavy blond hair.

Young as he was, Bolt's personality already showed through: cheerful, easily amazed by the smallest details of the world around him, but also watchful and calm, often careful, sensitive to whatever was happening nearby.

When she brought him into bed with her to finish watching her show, read, or embroider, he'd go quiet, taking in the room, then look up to find her face.

Even as a newcomer to the world and to that family, the baby already understood his parents' hearts, their intentions.

Conceived in love, he seemed to see them for something beyond blood and biology, always resting his head on their shoulders when they held him, always seeking their eyes out just to smile at them.

Watching Bolt from the armchair in the living room, crochet in hand, Hinata smiled as he pieced together the little frog toy Kiba and Shino had given him. The two of them always brought back a new toy for him whenever they returned from a mission.

Visits from Team 8 were always fun. Hinata liked to bake something and make tea to welcome them and catch up. Boruto, meanwhile, would race Akamaru across the floor (crawling, of course) with Mirai cheering him on.

His chubby legs crossed on the colorful rug, his round little hands feeling out whatever he touched, funny little puffs of breath escaping his lips as he explored the world.

"Hey, Bo." She crouched down beside him on the red rug. "Want to eat something? You've played plenty today. You need to eat, take a bath, and smell nice. Your dad'll be home soon."

"Papa?" His eyes lit up at the mention of Naruto. "Miss him."

"I miss him too. He actually called earlier. He should be home any minute." She lifted him into her arms, kissed his forehead, and breathed in the smell of his belly. "Hmm, you need a bath. Did you poop?"

"Poo-poo." He patted his bottom. "Poo-poo, mama."

"You pooped a lot, huh? I set your potty out to dry. I know you don't like diapers." She loved talking to him, asking him all kinds of things to help his mind and his words grow.

"Hot. Poo-poo hot!"

"It gets all warm, doesn't it, love?"

"Yeh!" The two of them headed to the bathroom in the master suite, chatting about their favorite animals, and took the chance to bathe together.

Even though the tub wasn't enormous, Bolt splashed around in the warm water like a little fish in the sea.

Moments like this were the ones she'd never forget. Just the thought of soon being back on active duty left a bitter taste in her mouth. As eager as she was to return to missions, some quiet part of her already ached at the thought of missing this.

So she made the most of every minute with him, playing, singing, and teaching him to count on his fingers.

Wrapped in her robe, she laid the little blond boy on the bed, cocooned in his frog towel, and showed him his options.

"Which onesie do you want to wear? There's this blue one or this pink one." He got so many clothes from her father it was nearly impossible to repeat an outfit.

Bolt thought it over, shook his head, then quickly pointed at his favorite.

"Pink." Hinata smiled, noticing how much better he'd gotten at putting sentences together, thanks in part to all the books they read him every night before bed.

"You want the pink one?" She always liked giving him the chance to choose for himself. Small as he was, she believed it mattered, that it was part of growing up with a sense of agency.

"Yeh."

"Good taste, love." As she finished drying him off, she noticed he'd gotten distracted smoothing down his own wet hair. Getting him dressed wasn't hard at all; Bolt was usually easygoing during changes and only cried when he was tired or hungry.

Clean and smelling nice, the two of them decided to get some fresh air and watch the day wind down. The sky, streaked in orange, opened paths through the clouds for birds flying off in the distance.

"This is an orange." Sitting with Boruto between her legs, Hinata introduced him to a whole new world of textures and tastes.

"Owange?"

"Orange." She laughed and kissed his chubby little foot. "Try it." She handed him a slice, damp with his saliva.

Bolt studied the fruit, then looked back at his mother, suspicious.

"You can eat it, love. It's good."

"Good, mama?"

"So good!"

Hinata took a bite of her slice to show him it was safe.

"See? Mmmm! Now you try."

He bit into it and chewed for a bit, making a small face.

"A little sour, huh?" Hinata laughed softly, remembering how Hanabi had reacted the same way to citrus when they were kids.

"No owange." He handed the chewed piece back to her and raised his hands. "Uther fwoot, mama."

"Another fruit?"

He nodded.

"You're getting smart. Okay, how about we try some grapes?"

"Yeh. Want."

"Delicious." Hinata picked a green grape from the bowl and bit into it. "It's sweet, but you have to spit the seed out, like this." She blew the seed into her hand.

He burst out laughing, and the sound of it sent a wave of pure joy straight through her.

"What's so funny, little clown? Just like your father." She gave his nose a gentle squeeze, his little teeth peeking through nearly bare gums. "Laughing at me?" She handed him the grape. "Try it."

Bolt bit into it and puckered his lips, then looked up at her.

"Gape."

"That's it."

"Mama." He pushed up onto his feet and threw himself into her arms with a soft little whimper. "Mama."

"You were so cheerful a second ago. Now you want to cry?" She stroked his curly hair, talking softly to him. "We'll lie down soon, and you can nurse, okay? But you're already full, love, and I don't want your tummy to hurt."

Hinata wanted to start cutting back on nursing to make room for him to explore other foods, but she knew it was never really about hunger for him. It was comfort, security, a kind of closeness they shared. But too much of it could end up doing more harm than good.

He crossed his arms, hiccupping, his lip trembling.

"Hey, Bo." She stroked his little face. "I love you. No need to cry." She picked him up. "How about we paint for a while? Hmm?"

"Paint?" He stopped hiccupping and stuck his thumb in his mouth. "Paint, mama?"

"Yes!" Carrying him back to the living room, she balanced him on one arm and grabbed the art supplies box with the other. She sat on the rug, set him facing her, and opened the box of crayons, pencils, paint, and paper. "Let's draw a bee!"

"Bee!" He clapped happily as Hinata sketched the first outline, letting her creative side show.

"I have to admit your dad draws better than me, but I'll try."

"Dada?"

"Yep. Did you know he used to scribble all over the Hokage Monument?" Hinata told him, smiling.

Boruto laughed, dimples showing.

"Your dad was a messy little artist."

"Messy attist!"

"That's right." They both laughed. "Give me your hand, sweetheart." Bolt held his hands out, and she painted his little fingers yellow, then pressed them onto the paper. "There!"

The pouty face and teary eyes were gone instantly, replaced by giggles and happy little shrieks as he pressed his hands onto the page again and again.

Fingers stained with paint, they filled sheet after sheet, wandering through their own little world of imagination.

The front door burst open, and the baby pushed at his legs, frustrated, not quite steady enough to stand on his own yet. Sensing how badly he wanted to walk, Hinata laughed at how sweet he was and helped him up.

"Tadaima!" Naruto's happy voice filled the quiet house, warm and full of life, as he stepped past the vases of flowers lining the windowsills. "Bolt! Hina!" He threw his arms open, beaming.

With a toothless grin, Hinata held his hands as he wobbled forward, step by unsteady step, toward the ninja crouched down waiting for him, his blue eyes shining with a happiness that was challenging to put into words.

The moment he finally reached his father's arms, Boruto's warm, contagious laughter filled the house with even more energy.

"Missed you so much, my chunky little guy, ‘ttebayo." Naruto covered his son's face in kisses, holding nothing back, completely smitten. "Bo, I missed you."

"Naunto! Dada!"

"Did you miss daddy?"

Bolt, thrilled, squeezed his father's cheeks between his little hands, and Naruto laughed.

"You smell so good, mmm." He started sniffing his little arms while Bolt kept grinning, showing off all four of his tiny teeth. "Did you take a bath?"

"Yeh!"

As Hinata came closer, Naruto stole a long kiss from his wife.

"Welcome home, love." She touched his cheek, and Boruto, a little jealous, buried his face against her neck.

The couple shared a laugh.

"Boruto, I came first, buddy." Naruto teased, rubbing his son's back. "Come on. She is my wife too! You're turning this into a competition, huh?"

"My mama." Bolt mumbled, hands on Hinata's face, resting his cheek against hers. "Mama my!"

"Look at you being so charming. I think I've fallen for you even harder." Hinata smiled playfully at her husband and kissed Bolt's cheek over and over. "You lost this one, Naruto-kun.”
