Chapter 1: Pilot

Chapter Text

“Kris..”

“Kris..!”

“Kr-“ “KRIS!!”

Confused and groggy, they eventually opened their eyes due to someone yelling their name?
… Which was from none other than Berdly (of course..), who was now unfortunately their group partner for the next month. The two had been “frenemies” for the past three years (mostly one sided.. on Berdly’s own accord.) He could be a pain sometimes but he was fun to talk to once in a while. But despite his few pros (and his snarky attitude..), they still couldn’t help but miss Susie, who was now fully infatuated with Noelle.
Once again they’d fallen asleep in class, which wouldn’t be a problem if he wasn’t such an arrogant geek.

Berdly smirked, “Look who’s fallen asleep in class AGAIN. I keep on telling you.. *tsk tsk* the key to exceptional grades is a good sleep schedule Dreemurr.” He said leaning against their desk,

They gave him an eye roll before digging their phone out of their pocket. They responded half heartedly, “I don’t care Nerdly.” They scoffed, “And why are you staying behind after class anyway?”

“You should know this by now third place, OBVIOUSLY I’m cleaning the erasers, I do this everyday.“ .. “You realize if we want to get a good grade on that group project we’re going to have to be compatible, right? And that’s not my name.” He raised an eyebrow,

Kris, unfazed continued to scroll on their phone. “It’s called a joke, but you wouldn’t know because you hate fun. And the due date is like a month away, who cares.” They raised an eyebrow and made a mocking gesture before shifting their attention back to their phone,

Berdly groaned and faced them, interlocking his fingers in a begging position. “Can we at least come up with a topic today? And I don’t hate fun, I just don’t think YOUR antics are funny.” …. “Which they aren’t ..”

They continued to scroll on their phone, basically ignoring him.

“Please Kris?”

“Kris.”

“Kris cross.. applesauce.”

“FINE Berdly.”

He pulled up a chair and sat down in front of them, “Alright so what do you think screams ‘Ms Alphys give us an A+ on this project..?” … “Like subject-wise?” awaiting an answer, Berdly started to twirl his pencil around

“Do I look like a walking Wikipedia page?”

“KRIS ANSWER THE QUESTION!” He squawked

They snickered, “How about fish?”

“Really Kris, fish?” .. “When you say fish do you mean saltwater, freshwater, or both? And do you want to go over crustaceans and reptiles, or strictly fish? His rambling went on for about two minutes before they had to put a stop to it.

They put a finger to the tip of his beak and basically “shushed” him. “How about coding, like in video games? Uhm you like that kinda stuff right?”

“You should know what kind of things I like considering we’ve been friend/enemies for about six years now.” (Of course he has something to say..)

“But yeah I guess that kinda sounds like a fun topic.”

“I feel like your whole ‘enemies’ shtick is one sided. And do you have any ideas about what we should do?”

“Fish?”

“Yeah.”

Berdly swung around and started hastily started packing his stuff up,

“What’s with the rush?..”

“Kris we don’t have time to waste!” He said in the nerdy voice he always spoke with.

“Like i said, the project due date is a month away.. who wants to suffer and do everything in the first week??” They said extremely jaded.

“And that is exactly why procrastination consumes you every-time you receive a due date Kris!” ..

“We’re going to the library.”

“Says who?”

“Says me~ and if you don’t comply I’m telling Ms Alphys you didn’t do any work.”

“Fine..” They whined,

after a PAINFUL 50 foot walk to the library filled with whining and complaining…

“You can stop crying now we’re here.” He rolled his eyes before practically having to drag them inside,

“G-get up!” he said between breaths, “Oh my angel you are heavy!” “Kris!!”
After thirty seconds of complaining from their partner, they got up on their own accord.

“Was that really necessary?”

“Yes actually.”

“I’m just not going to entertain this ragebait anymore, and do you have any study methods we can use for this project in particular?”

“Does it look like I study?”

“Okay.. uhm I was thinking we do flashcards so we can have fun but like study at the same time, yknow?”

They looked at him unamused, “Flashcards are your idea of fun?”

“Hey, I’m taking you into account here Dreemurr!” He squawked,

“Fine.. so are we putting like fish facts on these cards? Or like different types of fish, or maybe like predatory and non-predatory fish..”

“For someone who wasn’t so excited about this project a few hours ago, you seem pretty invested..” He smirked,

“Say something like that again and I’m asking the teacher to third wheel with Susie and Noelle.” They gave him an eye roll

“Fine then, gosh.. Listen, since I know more about fish than you do, I’ll make some flashcards and then I’ll quiz you.”

“How do you know that I know less about fish than you do?” They said with a raised eyebrow.

“Trust me,” Berdly smirked “As the #1 smartest student, I think I can guarantee I know more about fish than you do.”

“Then let’s both make flashcards and quiz eachother.” They smirked,

“Bet that.” (He tried to say menacingly, very obviously failing)

“You’re not in a Call Of Duty lobby stop that.”

The two spent the next hour in almost complete silence, focused on one thing. Fish themed flashcards. Both trying to think of as many facts about fish they knew of the top of their heads.

“Alright, I’m done.”

“Are you ready to get absolutely CRUSHED at fish trivia Nerdly?” They said excitedly,

“Oh I’m more than ready. I’m ecstatic.”

Not even ten seconds later, a rapid fire question from Kris,

“Which shark can live in both salt and fresh water bodies of water?”

“Pfft- that’s easy, Bull sharks.”

Berdly almost immediately hit them back with another one, “True or false, all fish are vertebrates?”

“Uhm, true? (I think)” they answered with uncertainty

“Beginners luck.” He scoffed.

“Not true! And how many types of fish are there?”

“30,000.”

“Correct. Unfortunately..”

“Like I said Kris..” (he guessed)

They gave him another one, “Are fish warm or cold blooded?”

“Uhm, cold- wait no, warm.. I think?”

“WRRONGG!!” They snickered,

He scoffed and snatched the piece of paper out of their hands, “That’s not-“ .. “That cant be right. Kris you wrote down the wrong answer.”

“No, you just got it wrong doofus.”

“No it’s wrong because I said so.” He said sarcastically,

“Give me my card back geek!” They elbowed him, trying to get the paper to fall out of his hands.

“You wish.” He scoffed, struggling to hold the card up because of the humans grip on his hand.
Kris snatched one of his flashcards, and held it as if they were going to rip it in half.
Berdly practically leaped onto them in order to stop them, dropping the stacks of flashcard paper in the process.

The two proceeded to roughhouse around the computer lab for the next 20 minutes…

*Huff..* “Kris you’re not getting-“ *Huff..* “this card back.” Berdly held it in the air while they jumped and pounced onto him in an attempt to get it.

“You’re cheating no fairr!!” They said while continuing (or at least trying) to pounce onto him.

“You’re pathetic.” He checked his watch, “And oh gosh it’s getting late, usually the library would be closed by now but it’s been pretty empty today, and this afternoon was supposed to be my shift. Uhm we should clean up. Uhm can you take care of the flashcards?”

“Do I look like a butler to you?” They said in a sarcastic tone while simultaneously going down to pick up the cards.

Berdly rolled his eyes. “Very funny. Now silence and pick up the cards before I tell Mrs Toriel about you and your unwillingness to do any real work.”

“We both accomplished little to nothing today MISTER..” they snapped jokingly, “And in my opinion, I think I did most of the work today.” Kris then proceeded to go out of their way to do a comically dramatic hair flip in Berdly’s face.”
He crossed his arms,

“I hate you.”

“You don’t mean that Berdly.”

He sighed, “Unfortunately you would be correct Kristyn.”

“Not my name Nerdly.”

The two finished packing up and walked out of the library.

“Uhm, do you want me to walk you home?” He asked awkwardly.

“Yeah that’s fine.”

The rather short walk home was filled with silence, but definitely not the awkward kind. The kind where all they had to do was enjoy each other’s company. Eventually they both found themselves in front of Kris’ porch.

Berdly opened his mouth and then stopped himself, waved goodbye and started walking. Before turning the doorknob Kris spontaneously grabbed his wing,
“Same time tomorrow?”

He almost looked surprised by their offer, “Y-yeah.” .. “Uhm I should get going, bye Kris!”

And they both parted ways.

As soon as the door closed behind them, their face started to flush. Did they really just catch themselves WANTING to hangout with Berdly of all people??

“Kris?” Toriel walked into the living room, “Oh Kris! Who was at the door? Were you ‘hanging’ with a friend today?”

“Yeah you could say that.” Maybe the two were closer than they thought.

Notes:

I’m trying to write longer chapters to my fics but turns out I actually hate doing that so
