Work Text:
Tommy was a vampire hunter.
But unlike the others, he was not a cruel one.
He hunted vampires to survive, for the hunters society would pay for his expenses as long as he stayed loyal and hunted when called to hunt.
But when he actually joined, he was unable to leave, for he had a ‘debt’ to the hunters society, since they paid his expenses, the only way for him to leave would be to pay the debt.
He had a normal life, a normal routine, well, the most normal a vampire hunter could be.
He woke up, went to school, sometimes got called out of school for missions, finished school, sometimes hung out with friends but rarely, then he took missions, bounties, to kill vampires in the area. Or even other dangerous non-humans.
It worked similarly to bounty hunting, or being an assassin for hire, he would be called in for missions, or go out after vampires himself.
One late night, Tommy heard an unusual sound from the alley outside his apartment.
He was about to climb into his window, just to avoid seeing other people, so he was in the alley behind the apartment.
A small bat was there, its wing injured.
Tommy stared at it for a few seconds.
It glared back at him, showing its fangs, clearly scared and in pain.
Tommy was a vampire hunter, sure.
But he was not cruel.
And this was just some injured animal.
Tommy walked over to it, reaching his hands out to pick it up.
The bat bit his hand, hissing.
Tommy pulled his hand back, frowning.
“It's okay, little one.” He tried to calm it. “I’m not going to hurt you.”
He reached out again, this time being able to wrap his hands around its fuzzy body, careful not to touch its wings.
He wasn’t sure just how delicate bats actually were.
The bat stared at him in surprise, almost fascination.
Tommy huffed at the staring.
He thought for a few seconds, he would have to have his hands free to climb into his apartment, but he wasn’t sure where to put the bat.
Well, his idea was risky, but it was all he could think of.
Tommy reached back, putting the bat in his hoodie. “Hold on, little one.”
The bat held onto his hoodie.
Tommy grabbed onto the side of the wall, climbing slowly, careful as to not drop the bat.
He finally reached his window, climbing into the building.
He closed the window behind him, reaching a hand back to check that the bat was still there.
He felt his hand bitten.
Instead of reacting in pain, he simply sighed in relief.
He carefully picked the bat up, while it was still biting his hand. He really didn’t care all that much, he had felt much worse pain.
He placed it down on a table.
The bat let go of his hand to look around quickly, clearly looking for an exit.
Though it wouldn’t be able to fly away, with its bleeding wing.
Tommy walked towards one of his drawers, taking out his medkit.
He placed it down beside the bat, opening it.
The bat peered into it curiously, while still keeping an eye on Tommy.
Though it looked more fascinated and surprised than scared, fortunately.
Tommy took out a bandage, then disinfectant.
He treated the bat’s wound as if it was a human, since he didn’t know how to treat animals.
Then he grabbed a random stray stick, tying it to the wing as a brace.
He had seen that somewhere before, a movie? He wasn’t sure.
The bat was staring at him the entire time.
Tommy stared back.
What had he done? He wasn’t sure.
Did he do it right? Would the bat be okay?
And why did he even care to help the bat?
He wasn’t sure.
His contemplating was cut off by a knock on the door.
“Fuck.” He stared at the door.
Then he looked at the bat.
He quickly opened a drawer, knocking the bat inside it and closing it.
The bat squeaked in surprise as it fell in.
“Quiet.” He told it, before closing the drawer and walking towards the door.
He opened it. “Hey.” He greeted them briefly.
It was Dream, one of the head vampire hunters, or monster hunters.. Maybe both.
“Tommy. You’ve fallen behind on missions.” Dream told him.
Tommy rolled his eyes, “Cool. So?”
“So you need to do more missions, do more training, stop slacking. Vampires won’t hunt themselves.” Dream said.
“Well, I dunno, I heard they sometimes make mistakes, or fight each other.” Tommy shrugged. “But it isn’t my fault, school has been schooling, and taking up a lot of my time. I’ll try to catch up on missions, I guess.”
“Well it's the weekend now, so you’re going to be spending the weekend catching up on missions and doing more hunting.” Dream said.
“Cool. Bye.” Tommy said briefly.
“Bye, Tommy.” Dream turned and walked away.
Tommy closed the door.
He turned around, opening the drawer to the bat quickly.
The bat stared at him, in fear and fascination. Surprise too.
Tommy huffed. “Stop staring.” He paused. “Do you think it is okay to leave now? Or.. Should you stay until the morning?” He asked.
He wasn’t sure why he even expected the bat to listen, it was an animal, it probably didn’t understand what he was saying.
Tommy reached over to it and poked at it’s wing.
It hissed in pain. And then promptly bit him.
Right, that was probably a ‘still hurts’.
Tommy pulled his hand away, looking around.
He grabbed one of his spare blankets, wrapping it around the bat.
He set the drawer up like a nest, leaving it open for the bat to leave when it wanted to, and the window the slightest bit open in case it was ready to leave.
Then, he just went to bed.
“Goodnight, little bat.” Tommy called.
He fell asleep quickly.
-
Tommy woke up the next morning, getting up, getting into his day clothes.
He checked the drawer, the bat wasn’t in the nest, but the window wasn’t opened more, so it probably hadn’t left.
Tommy sighed, facepalming. “Where did it go..” He muttered, looking around.
He heard a noise from a different room, towards the kitchen, his food storage being looked through.
He sighed, right, the bat probably was in the kitchen looking for food.
Tommy walked through to the kitchen, entering it.
What he didn’t exactly expect was to see a vampire standing there, a few snacks in its hands, and it was staring at the fridge with a very judgmental look.
Tommy instantly jumped in surprise.
The vampire turned to him quickly, fixing him with a calm stare.
The calmness sort of scared Tommy.
“Uh.. What- what are you doing here?” Tommy stuttered.
He realised after a short moment, the bat was a vampire.
“You healed my wing.” The vampire told him.
“..Fuck.” Tommy looked down at the ground.
The vampire walked up to him. “Thanks for that.” They thanked him.
“Mhm.” Tommy hummed, staring at it, still slightly scared, out of instinct.
All his previous encounters with vampires included a very large amount of violence.
The vampire looked at him in amusement, “Scared?”
“Nuh-uh.” Tommy responded, forcing himself to look at the vampire instead of the floor.
They were a guy, a tall brunette, wearing an obnoxiously yellow sweater, and also wearing glasses.
And vampires had perfect vision, so clearly the glasses were a choice.
“Your glasses look ugly.” Tommy said instantly.
The vampire laughed, “Nice to meet you too.”
“And your decision in color is very questionable.” Tommy judged him.
“Your decision in helping a random injured bat on the streets was confusing. But here we are.” The vampire shrugged. “Thanks for not killing me, or leaving me there.”
“How did you even manage to get hurt in the first place?” Tommy asked.
“Vampire hunters, like you.” The vampire said simply.
Tommy froze, “You heard that.”
“You don’t seem like the kind of person to be a vampire hunter. I always imagined they were all cold hearted and rude and stuff.” The vampire commented, eyeing him.
“You don’t seem like the kind of person to be a vampire, I was told they all just kill people when they can, but I’m still alive, aren’t I?” Tommy responded sharply. “And I’m only a vampire hunter because it’s the only available profession. How else would I pay for anything?”
The vampire nodded slowly. “Right. So you aren’t one by choice.”
Tommy huffed, “No, I guess not.” He paused. “What’s with all the questions?” He pointed at the vampire. “And why are you in my house?”
“You brought me in here.” The vampire responded.
“I mean why are you still here? Like, you haven’t left.”
“Eh. I dunno. Wanted to raid the fridge, but you don’t have anything good.” The vampire paused, “I’m also stalling going home because I just know my coven mates would be unhappy at me for almost dying.” He admitted with a sigh.
Tommy laughed, “Hah! You’re in trouble!”
“Who even are you? Saving a bat? Joining the hunters because of necessity?” The vampire asked.
“The name’s Tommy!” Tommy paused. “Not that it’s any of your business.” He added
“I’m Wilbur, nice to meet you.”
“Horrible name.”
“Thanks, Tommy.”
“That wasn’t a compliment.”
“Thanks, Tommy.”
Tommy groaned in frustration, “Why are you still here?”
“Could I stay here for today? I don’t want to go home yet. Plus my wing isn’t fully healed. And I don’t want to die on the way home. I’d like to go home at night.” Wilbur asked.
Tommy sighed, facepalming. “Seriously?”
Silence.
“Fine, I guess.” Why was he even saying yes? He should have been saying no and telling Wilbur to go away. But that was his first time seeing a vampire and not having to fight it instantly.
Maybe he was learning more about vampires to fight them better?
Yeah. That was it. Totally.
“Thanks.” Wilbur nodded, before quickly eating a cookie.
“Do you really have to steal my food? Vampires don’t even get sustenance from anything other than blood.” Tommy glared at him.
“Eh. It tastes good, sugar.” Wilbur said.
Tommy walked away and sat on the couch, head in his hands
How was he possibly going to keep Wilbur in his house for the day? He had to go out and hunt so that Dream wasn’t chasing after him.
Tommy felt someone flop down next to him.
He moved his head to glare at Wilbur, who was eating snacks, and had just grabbed the tv remote and turned the tv on.
“You can’t just.. Stay here?” Tommy said.
“Watch me.” Wilbur grinned at him.
Tommy sighed, “I’ve got to go out hunting soon, Dream might knock on the door and see you, you will certainly be attacked by any other hunter, it is hard to hide a literal vampire.” He listed, counting on his fingers.
Wilbur thought for a few moments, “Hm. Well, you can just hunt more tomorrow to catch up from today, and I can just hide if someone knocks on the door.”
“You want me to just… Stay in the house with you? The entire day?” Tommy stared at him in surprise.
“Exactly.” Wilbur nodded.
Tommy sighed, “Fine. But only for one day. And only because I don’t even want to go hunting today.”
Wilbur grinned, “Awesome! We can have a fun day!”
“What exactly is your concept of fun?” Tommy pointed at him.
“Uh. Video games. And.. Annoying people.”
“Congrats, you’ve annoyed me, so consider yourself… Having fun.” Tommy rolled his eyes. “At least video games are kind of fun.” He nodded. “We can agree on that.”
“Awesome. What games do you have?” Wilbur asked.
“Not many. I don’t have the time or money to get games. Usually my friends just bring the games over when we play.” Tommy said.
Wilbur huffed, “Boring. You should get some good games.”
Tommy rolled his eyes, “Right. I would if I could.”
“Could you call your friends over or something?”
“Do you really want me to call.. My human friends.. To my home.. Where I am hiding a vampire.” Tommy said slowly, staring at him in disbelief.
“Good point.” Wilbur said.
“…”
“Got any books?” Wilbur asked.
Tommy sighed, “Sure, I guess.”
He got up, walking to his bookshelf, and taking out a few books, throwing them at Wilbur.
Wilbur caught them, no surprise, but it still annoyed Tommy.
“Really? ‘How to fight vampires’. ‘A guide to hunting monsters’.” Wilbur read out some titles, lowering the book and giving Tommy a judgemental stare.
“It’s what the vampire hunting society gave me.” Tommy shrugged.
Wilbur flipped through the book, “Some facts here aren’t even accurate.” He said.
“Really? Care to tell me the actual best way to kill a vampire?” Tommy asked.
Wilbur huffed, “Do you have any actual books?”
Tommy took out a few more books, “Uh, I got stuff from my history class. And random poetry. And a wildlife book Tubbo forced me to read.” He tossed the books at Wilbur.
The vampire caught them, once again. Annoying.
“Good enough.” Wilbur said, grabbing the wildlife book. “I’ll just read this one, warm myself up to judge the accuracy of the history books.”
“Right, immortal.” Tommy pointed at him. “Old.”
Wilbur gave him a dramatic look, “Excuse me? I am not old!”
“You just said you were there for stuff in history books.”
“Well, not all of them! … Probably!”
“Right.”
Wilbur huffed in annoyance.
“Want to help me with my history homework?” Tommy asked him, laughing under his breath.
Wilbur shrugged, “Maybe, later.” He opened the wildlife book.
“Cool.” Tommy sat down on the couch as well, taking out one of his own books and starting to read himself.
Book club with a vampire.
How cool.
What was Tommy even doing-
Nevermind, he had learnt not to ask himself why he kept doing dumb stuff.
It was a miracle he was still alive.
-
It was a few hours later, Tommy had gotten into multiple arguments with Wilbur about the books they were reading.
Wilbur kept questioning the facts in the books.
Tommy was increasingly annoyed at him.
Then, there was a knock on the door.
Tommy got up to go towards the door, looking back at Wilbur.
Wilbur reached for his weapon.
Tommy shook his head furiously.
Wilbur put his hands up in a ‘what do you want me to do?’ Annoyed movement.
Tommy pointed at the closet, glaring at him.
Wilbur rolled his eyes, but got up and hid in the closet, closing the door behind him.
Tommy walked to the door, opening it.
Dream was standing there, “Still in your house?”
“Go away, Dream.” Tommy responded.
“You haven’t done any missions.” Dream told him.
“I noticed.” Tommy snorted. “I’ll do missions tomorrow.”
Dream eyed him, “Oh really? Well there is increased vampire activity around, a high ranking coven searching the area. They are nearing this street.” He said.
Tommy huffed, “Well, maybe we just let them find who they want to find and they’ll leave?”
“We need to take this chance to attack them.”
“You. Not we. I’m having a nice day off studying.” He signalled to the books on the couch.
Dream glared at him. “You need to watch yourself, you better hunt very well tomorrow.”
“Mhm.” Tommy hummed. “Bye.”
“Bye.”
Tommy closed the door quickly, and waited until he heard footsteps going away before walking to the closet.
“Clear.” He said.
Wilbur opened the closet door, walking out.
A moment of silence.
“I think my coven is searching for me.” Wilbur said awkwardly.
“Really? You’re the high ranking coven member?” Tommy eyed him.
“Yeah. Sort of.”
“Wow, I did not expect you to be high ranking.” Tommy commented, before sitting back down on the couch and picking his book back up.
“Rude.” Wilbur huffed, but he also just sat down and continued reading.
They just continued reading in silence, as if that hadn’t happened.
But it didn’t last long until Wilbur was glaring intensely at his book.
“You seem annoyed.” Tommy commented.
“This book. Is dumb.” Wilbur said.
“Cool.” Tommy said.
“I don’t want to read anymore.” Wilbur told him.
“Cool. So? I don’t have much else to do.”
“Didn’t you say you have history homework to do?” Wilbur asked.
“Really? You want to help? Well, that’d be nice.” Tommy got up, walking to his school bag and taking out his history homework, before tossing it at Wilbur.
The two then spent the next 30 minutes being confused and annoyed at the homework.
-
The shenanigans of trying to do homework were interrupted by a loud crashing noise.
Tommy was kind of half relieved at the interruption, Wilbur was an idiot, he knew all the answers, but was just.. Bad at putting the answers down right. And kept judging the facts given.
Then his relief was replaced by fear and confusion as he saw what it was.
Two vampires, both holding weapons, their weapons pointed at Tommy.
“Hey… Dad… Techno…” Wilbur said awkwardly.
Tommy gave Wilbur a confused look, before returning his gaze to watch the two vampires.
They were glaring at him, weapons pointed at him, clearly unhappy.
“Step away from my brother.” The stronger looking one said, voice sharp.
Techno, Tommy assumed.
Tommy instantly got up to listen to them and step away, but instead was pulled back by Wilbur, holding him close.
“Wil. What.” Tommy struggled.
Wilbur held him, eyes fixed on the others. “I’m not kidnapped, I’m fine.” He told them.
“What? So you just.. Are hanging out in a vampire hunter’s home… By choice?” Techno gave him a confused look.
“Yeah, he refused to leave.” Tommy added.
Wilbur ruffled his hair playfully, “Shut up.”
“Phil, can you believe this idiot?” Techno said to the vampire beside him, Wilbur’s dad.
Phil huffed, “Wil, what’s going on?”
“Okay. So-“
“Let me go.” Tommy cut him off.
“No.”
Tommy glared at him.
“As I was saying. I was out doing my own thing, when a vampire hunter attacked me, hurt my wing-”
“Wil. You went out and got attacked. Seriously?” Techno sighed.
“And I was in bat form. And then this child-“ Wilbur continued
“Am not a child!” Tommy protested.
Wilbur ignored him, “-he rescues me while I was in bat form. And takes care of me. I stay here for the night in bat form. Then in the morning in my usual form I raid the fridge-“
Techno snorted, “Predictable.”
“-and he finds me. Then we read books and argue over history for… How long has it been? A few hours.” Wilbur finished
“Because you kept judging the books.” Tommy added.
“They were inaccurate.” Wilbur said.
“You had a complaint every second page.”
“Well they shouldn’t have so many mistakes every second page then.” Wilbur said.
Techno and Phil facepalmed.
“Why didn’t you come home?” Phil asked.
“Scaredy cat was too scared to go home because he knew you would be unhappy at him-“ Tommy added.
Wilbur bonked him on the head gently, “Shut up. I wasn’t scared. I just wanted to go home at night so that I wouldn’t be attacked again.”
“Sure, totally.” Tommy rolled his eyes. “Can you let me go now?”
Wilbur finally let go of Tommy, and Tommy instantly jumped a few steps backwards, as if Wilbur might change his mind.
“Wilbur.” Techno stared at Wilbur.
“Techno.” Wilbur responded, staring back.
“Why.”
“Why not?”
“You-“ Techno cut himself off, taking a deep breath.
“Does this mean you guys can go now? I got missions to catch up on so I don’t get in trouble.” Tommy cut in.
Techno pointed at him. “You.”
“Me.”
“Why did you save Wilbur?”
“He was a bat. I didn’t know.”
“Why didn’t you kill him when you found out?”
“The real question is why didn’t I throw him out the window when he judged my books for the millionth time.”
“Answer the question.”
“Well. No clue. I just didn’t want to.”
“…What.”
“He seemed chill.”
Techno facepalmed. “I’m surrounded by idiots.” He pointed at Phil. “Except you.”
“Thanks.” Phil said.
“Can you go now?” Tommy asked. “Gonna say this again, I have missions to catch up on. And your searching caused quite the commotion.”
“You’re a hunter.” Techno narrowed his eyes at Tommy.
“Correct.”
“And yet you didn’t kill Wilbur.”
“Correct.”
“And you abandoned your missions to spend time with Wilbur.”
“Also correct.”
“…Why? Aren’t vampire hunters.. Like.. Cruel?”
“It pays well. I have no other way to earn money.” Tommy shrugged.
Techno stared at him for a few seconds. “Huh. Didn’t know that. So you don’t willingly hurt vampires.”
“Nope. I think vampires are chill and would leave humans alone if we left them alone. But alas, we do not.” Tommy said.
Techno gave him the most confused expression in the world. “Bruh.”
“Once again, can you go now, I don’t want to get in trouble. Gotta do missions.” Tommy said.
“Yeah, we should go.” Phil said.
“Awesome! Bye!” Wilbur smiled at them.
“You’re coming with us.” Phil pointed at Wilbur.
Wilbur sighed, “Awh, but I was having fun.”
“Take him and leave!” Tommy threw his hands in the air.
Techno grabbed Wilbur by the arm and started to drag him towards the window.
Phil turned and followed, but paused halfway there, turning around to face Tommy.
“Thanks for helping us, we’ll remember this.”
“Why did that feel like a threat.”
“It wasn’t.”
“I’m pretty sure a vampire coven owing me would be a threat.. if not from them then the vampire hunting society. Oh god I’m going to be in so much trouble.”
Phil laughed, amused, before turning around and climbing out the window.
Wilbur and Techno had already left, with many complaints from Wilbur.
