Bait and switch

Summary:

Intern’s shifts followed a very similar pattern which included but wasn’t limited to: being overworked, having to cut throat for coffee, listen to 2 guys trauma dump about intern’s work place, and many many surgeries they were not qualified for. When there’s one person who manages to cause even just pause the pattern for even just a few minute. Intern was gonna latch on hard. Maybe a bit too hard?

Or..

Intern is so bored from their job that they become obsessed with a serial killer named Barney

Chapter 1: What was his name again?

Chapter Text

Intern had been working or well interning at the hospital for a while now. What counted as a while? 5 shifts, but they made it through an ambulance rush which brought as many patients and even more anomalies than multiple shift. Hell they even completed multiple emergency surgeries since the actual surgeon got mauled by an anomaly. To say they were overworked was an.. understatement. And all of this work earned the measly minimum wage so they couldn’t even afford a gun until the bonus came in. Meanwhile secret agent had what, 3 guns?
“I should’ve just applied to the hospital next city over. 8 years of med school for this. Not to mention not eating Dr.Harlow during the interview..” They sighed. *Ding* that was the sound of their one saving grace, the coffee machine. So while they were technically fine the coffee was rightfully taken before Head Nurse claimed she needed it most for “caring for the patients” and by that she means ripping the patient’s fur out and leaving Intern do the rest.
Intern sighed after taking a gulp, they earned this coffee and boy did they enjoy it.
“Excuse me,”
Intern leapt a bit spilling some of the coffee onto their hoodie. “Oh my god! I thought all of the patients were good. Uhh are you a checking in on someone or do you need treatment?” Intern tried their best to give a friendly smile.
“Ah, sorry for startling you friend, I’m Barney.”
Friend? No this man was not a friend, Intern was sure he’s never even seen him before.
“But may I ask for a favor friend?”
“..Sure I guess?” Intern responded a bit unsure. Normally you shouldn’t give in to a stranger asking for stuff but during their training they were told “patient is always right” which wasn’t the original saying.
“Can you give me a coffee? I had a long day...” the white rabbit asked.
Damnit. Intern was basically half way through the coffee, actually more than halfway. Would he even accept the half drank coffee? Wait why Intern was worrying over this rabbit?! He walks up in here, scares the hell out of them and then asks for their coffee.
“Hello friend? Is that a no?” He piped into Intern’s pondering. Right this is still a hospital, they’re supposed to show “hospitality”.
“Ah sorry thinking about the patients, here you go.” They slid the coffee over. Wondering if this Barney guy would take it. The answer was yes, Barney took slow sips of the coffee as if he was savoring every part of the watered down hospital coffee.
“Thanks friend, I needed that… I will remember this.” He then soon went out like the interaction was nothing but a dream.
“Hey Intern! There’s too many patients to be chatting up a storm. Hell that Ron guy needs surgery! Our surgeon needs about a shift or 2 to recover til he can get back to slicing and stitching!” Head nurse yelled across the room.
“Yes ma’am I’m heading there right now!” Seems like they won’t have anymore time to replay that moment in their head and wonder what that interaction even was. Maybe another day they’ll get to learn more about that strange man. Named what was it again? Barnaby? No it was, Barney. The first name they remembered in the 5 shifts.
