Chapter 1: The Walkout

Chapter Text

The tension in the Barcelona arena was suffocating. Robby stood alongside his Miyagi-Do teammates, his eyes scanning the crowd, until they locked onto the opposing mat.

There she was.

Tory.

Wearing the black and red of Cobra Kai.

The world went silent.

The betrayal stung, but looking at her hollow eyes, Robby didn't feel anger. He felt a profound, overwhelming wave of clarity. He remembered why she was here—her mother, her desperation, her lack of a support system.

Then he looked at Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. They were already muttering about Cobra Kai's dirty tactics, viewing Tory as the enemy instead of a hurting teenager.

In that exact second, Robby realized he was on the wrong side. He didn't belong in a dojo that forced him to choose between a plastic trophy and the girl he loved.

Without saying a word, Robby unknotted his Miyagi-Do headband. He dropped it onto the mat.

"Robby? What are you doing?" Sam whispered, reaching out.

Robby didn't look back. He turned his back on Miyagi-Do, walking straight across the tournament floor toward the Cobra Kai banner.

Towards Tory.

Daniel stepped forward, his voice cracking. "Robby, wait! Don't do this!"

Johnny took a step too, confusion turning into panic. "Robby! Get back here!"

Robby ignored them. Every camera in the Sekai Taikai arena tracked his movement. The crowd began to murmur. Kreese watched with a smug, victorious grin, while Da Eun Kim crossed her arms, amused.

Tory watched him approach, her breath catching in her throat. Her tough exterior fractured, tears welling in her eyes. "Robby... what are you doing?”

Robby stopped right in front of her. He reached out, taking her trembling hand in his.

"I don't care about the tournament, Tory," Robby said, his voice ringing loud and clear. "I care about you. If you're here, I'm here. We do this together."

Kreese stepped down from the coaching platform, a calculated warmth in his eyes. "Mr. Keene. Standard registration allows for late roster adjustments. Are you back where you belong?"

Robby looked Kreese dead in the eye. He wasn't falling for the old man's manipulation anymore, but he would use Cobra Kai's resources to keep Tory safe. "I'm here for her. Not for you. Keep that straight."

Kreese's smile tightened, but he nodded. "An alliance of convenience is still an alliance. Welcome back."

Across the arena, the Miyagi-Do camp was in utter shock. Hawk looked stunned, Demetri was muttering statistics, and Miguel just stared, understanding the weight of the choice Robby had just made.

Robby grabbed a spare black Cobra Kai gi jacket from the bench and slipped it on. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Tory, facing the mats.

"They're going to hate us," Tory whispered, looking at the furious expressions of their former friends.

Robby squeezed her hand. "Let them. We're striking first this time. For each other."

The Sekai Taikai officials immediately flagged the incident, halting the tournament music. Two judges in tailored suits stepped onto the mat, speaking rapidly into their headsets.

Daniel and Johnny bypassed security, storming toward the Cobra Kai boundary.

"Robby, are you out of your mind?!" Johnny yelled, his veins popping. "You’re throwing away everything we built! For them? For Kreese?!"

"Johnny, step back," Daniel warned, though his own face was pale with disbelief. He looked at Robby, then at the dropped headband. "Robby, please. Look at what you're doing. Kreese is manipulating this situation. Don't let him win."

Robby didn't blink. He stepped directly between the older men and Tory, shielding her. "This isn't about Kreese. It’s about how you all treat people. The second Tory needed help, you made her the enemy. I'm not doing that anymore."

"She chose them, Robby!" Johnny argued, pointing a finger at Tory.

"She didn't have a choice!" Robby fired back, his voice cutting through the arena noise.

“But I do”

The head tournament official stepped between the groups, holding up his hands. "Quiet! Silence!" He turned to his tablet, scanning the Sekai Taikai rules. "Under Section 4 of the international roster bylaws, a fighter may switch dojo affiliation prior to the official start of the elimination rounds, provided both dojos sign off on the transfer, or the fighter forfeits their individual seed to join as an alternate."

Kreese stepped forward, smoothly pulling a digital stylus from his pocket. "Cobra Kai accepts Robby Keene onto our official roster. Electronic signature submitted."

The official looked at Robby. "Mr. Keene. Do you confirm this transfer, knowing you forfeit your captaincy status for Miyagi-Do?"

"I confirm," Robby said clearly.

The official nodded, updating the digital bracket on the stadium's giant screens. Robby’s name instantly shifted from blue to deep red. "The transfer is legal and recognized. Miyagi-Do, return to your side immediately or face team disqualification."

Daniel looked heartbroken.

Johnny looked furious, but the security guards forced them back. Robby turned his back on them, walking with Tory toward the tunnels.

The heavy steel door of the Cobra Kai locker room slammed shut, cutting off the roar of the arena.

The atmosphere instantly turned predatory.

Before Robby could even take off his jacket, Kwon stepped into his path, his eyes cold and sharp. The other international Cobra Kai male fighters closed in, forming a tight, menacing circle around Robby.

"You think because you wore this gi once before, you're one of us?" Kwon asked, his voice low and dangerous.

Robby didn't back down, squaring his shoulders. "I don't care about being one of you."

"Listen to me, golden boy," Kwon said, stepping closer until he was inches from Robby's face. He pointed a thumb back toward Tory, who was sitting on a bench, wrapping her hands. "She is Cobra Kai. She proved herself to Sensei Kim. She is the only girl on this team, which makes her our sister. You break her heart again, you bring your high-school drama into our arena, and we will break you. Understand?"

Another massive fighter stepped up, cracking his knuckles. "We don't care who your dad is. You hurt her, you answer to the whole house."

Tory stood up, her voice snapping like a whip. "Hey! I don't need you guys protecting me. I can fight my own battles."

Kwon didn't break eye contact with Robby, but his tone softened slightly for Tory. "We know you can, Nichols. But family protects family. He needs to know his place."

Robby looked past Kwon, meeting Tory’s eyes. Then he looked back at Kwon. "I’m not here to hurt her. I'm here because I'm the only one who didn't abandon her. If you want to test me, we can go right now. Otherwise, get out of my face so we can win this tournament."

Kwon stared at him for a long, tense moment, searching for fear. Finding none, a smirk finally broke across his face. He patted Robby's shoulder—hard enough to leave a bruise.

"Good," Kwon whispered. "Let's see if your fists are as loud as your mouth."

The heavy steel door clicked shut as Kwon and the rest of the Cobra Kai fighters filed out, leaving Robby and Tory alone in the concrete locker room. The digital clock on the wall glowed red, counting down from five minutes.

Tory let out a breath she had been holding, her shoulders finally dropping. She walked over to Robby, looking up at him through her eyelashes. "You're insane. You know that, right? You threw away your captaincy. Your dad, LaRusso... they’ll never forgive you."

"I don't care," Robby said, stepping closer and taking her hands. Her knuckles were tightly wrapped in white tape. "When I saw you out there, nothing else mattered. Miyagi-Do talks a lot about balance, but they don't have it. They wanted me to focus on a trophy while you were hurting. That's not balance."

Tory looked down at their joined hands, a rare flash of vulnerability crossing her face. "Kwon wasn't kidding, Robby. Cobra Kai is different this time. It's brutal. Sensei Kim doesn't accept weakness, and neither do the guys."

"They don't scare me," Robby replied softly, lifting her chin so she had to look at him. "And neither does Kreese. We use them, they use us. But you and me? We're the real team here."

The digital clock buzzed, a sharp tone indicating two minutes remaining.

Tory managed a small, fierce smile, the old fire returning to her eyes. She pulled a spare black Cobra Kai headband from her gym bag and pressed it into his palm. "Then tie this on. It's time to show them what they lost."

The Sekai Taikai arena roared as the first event was called: a synchronized team skirmish. Five fighters from each dojo on the mat simultaneously, fighting to secure the first ten points.

Miyagi-Do lined up on the blue side: Miguel, Sam, Hawk, Demetri, and Kenny.

Cobra Kai lined up on the red side: Kwon and Tory in the center, flanked by Robby, and two towering korean fighters.

Johnny and Daniel stood at the edge of the mat, their eyes glued to Robby, who now wore the black gi and the black Cobra Kai headband.

"Look at him," Johnny muttered, his chest aching. "He looks just like I did."

"He's not fighting like you, Johnny," Daniel said, his face tightening as the referee blew the whistle. "Look at his stance. He's blending it."

The fight erupted into chaos. Miguel immediately charged toward Kwon, while Sam intercepted Tory. Robby found himself facing Hawk, who came in with a barrage of aggressive wheel kicks.

In the past, Robby would have used Miyagi-Do's circular defense to redirect Hawk's energy. But the Cobra Kai environment had unlocked something raw. Robby ducked under a spin kick, but instead of resetting, he used the aggressive, forward-marching offense of the Fist style he had learned from Silver and Da Eun. He drove a brutal side kick into Hawk’s ribs, scoring the first point.

Red: 1.

"What the hell?!" Hawk gasped, clutching his side as he backed off.

Behind them, Kwon was a whirlwind of lethal  extensions, but Miguel caught him with a sweep. Before Miguel could capitalize, Robby altered his trajectory. He didn't just defend Kwon; he leaped off Kwon’s bent knee, launching a flying twist kick that struck Miguel square in the chest.

Red: 2.

Kwon rolled to his feet, staring at Robby in brief surprise before grinning. "Not bad, Keene!"

Daniel’s jaw dropped from the sidelines. "He’s using Miyagi-Do defense to predict their moves, but executing with Cobra Kai offense. He’s filling the gaps for them."

The synergy was terrifying. In the center of the mat, Tory and Kwon fought like mirror images—fast, ruthless, and unrelenting. Tory ducked under a strike from Sam, creating an opening for Kwon to deliver a spinning heel kick to Sam's guard, throwing her off balance. Tory immediately followed up with a flying back fist to Sam's shoulder.

Red: 3

Miyagi-Do was completely blindsided. They expected a fractured Cobra Kai, burdened by internal drama. Instead, they faced a synchronized machine. Robby acted as the tactical anchor, adapting to Kwon's wildness and Tory's fury, covering their blind spots before Miguel or Hawk could exploit them.

With a final, coordinated strike, Kwon swept Demetri while Robby landed a decisive spinning hook kick on Kenny's chest guard.

The buzzer sounded.

The scoreboard flashed:

COBRA KAI: 10 | MIYAGI-DO:0

The arena erupted. Kreese smiled smoothly from the bench, nodding in approval.

Robby didn't celebrate. He stood in the center of the mat, shoulder-to-shoulder with Tory and Kwon. He looked directly at Johnny and Daniel, his face expressionless, showing them exactly what happens when you push a Keene into a corner.
