Chapter 1: Duty over heart

Chapter Text

Why are you so obsessed with me?!
——————————————————————-

“Rangi, I finished all my chores today, I was thinking maybe we could hang out?” The fire bender’s attention was now on Kyoshi. Her heart fluttered.

“Hey Kyoshi I have to go on duty in a little while, sorry…” The servant had a disappointing smile. “Oh…well maybe when you’re done with that do you wanna hang out later?” Kyoshi asked softly.

Rangi’s posture was still straight as ever. “Ah well by then dinner will be ready and you know how that works.”

Rangi was referring to the servants not eating in the main dining area because of their lack of rank.

“Maybe you could get ahead of more work.” The Avatar’s bodyguard always took pride in her work, explaining something about honor a while back.

“Oh alright.” Kyoshi was now looking at her shoes. Rangi scanned the taller girl beside her and the sight twisted on Rangi’s heartstrings. “Maybe tomorrow? At noon?”

“Why did I say that?” Rangi thought to herself. Well, it was too late to take those words back now.

And Rangi never liked seeing her gloomy.

Kyoshi perked up. Then seemed to be caught in thought.

“Hmm yeah, I think I can do that! I would just have to get up extremely early.”

“Early?” Rangi questioned.

“So I can finish my chores on time to meet up with you.” The freckled girl blushed.

Rangi ignored it. “Alrighty then it’s settled.”

The fire bender started to walk past Kyoshi. “I have to start going, Yun’s training is about to start,” Rangi stated while trying not to make too much eye contact.

“Okay, I’ll see you later then!” Kyoshi smiled warmly.

Kyoshi seemed to always be showing up constantly in Rangi and that alone made Rangi want to take more distance not because she didn’t like Kyoshi, god no that statement couldn’t be more wrong.

Rangi started to notice that she couldn’t stop thinking of the servant girl and she wasn’t sure why that was.

All she knew was that Kyoshi was distracting her from her job not physically just mentally the green eyed girl just seemed to never leave her mind.

This wasn’t Kyoshi’s fault but because of it Rangi started to avoid.

"Ugh, why did I tell her that? I need an excuse to not show up…"

"But…"

"I don’t want to cancel. UGH, what am I even thinking I just need to get to Yun."

Seems to be that Rangi was struggling to know why and how to handle these unexpected feelings.

And with that, Kyoshi wasn’t making those feelings any easier.

Rangi was waiting in the courtyard for Yun, along with Hei-Ran who was already there.

Daughter like mother honestly they both were always early.

Nothing was unusual about that but with time to spare while waiting Hei-Ran spoke.

“You seem to be distracted.” Rangi glared at her mother. Her mom could always read her like an open book.

Rangi finally responded “I'm taking care of it.” “Is that so? Seems to be the opposite.” The woman was still looking forward.

Before Rangi could even get anything out she was cut off. “Whatever it is, pushing it down isn’t working. Figure it out head on before it gets worse.”

The air seemed to stretch between them. Figure it out? How could she if ignoring it seemed to be easier? Rangi then got cut off in her thoughts.

“Rangi, I know you, and I'm telling you now pushing it down will only make things worse.

God why could she read her so clearly?

Before she could answer Yun finally appeared in front of the two.

Hei-Ran was already talking to Yun as if she just wasn’t giving her daughter advice she didn’t ask for but very much needed to hear.

Even with the advice Rangi was very stubborn, especially with feelings she didn’t quite understand.

She walked beside them to the training room and was left to stand outside the room and guard.

While out on guard Rangi’s thoughts started wandering again. This time not only about Kyoshi but about when she was at the all girls fire academy.

“I've had these feelings towards a few girls there, but when it comes to Kyoshi… ah I don’t wanna be distracted.” Rangi sighed keeping her eyes ahead of her.

“I simply don’t have the time to think like that, just like how I didn’t have time to dwell on my feelings back then. I needed to focus on getting out of there back then.” Rangi thought to herself.

Clearly conflicted, but from the outside she looked focused on her duty.

No one would dare to come up to-

Kyoshi then appeared in front of Rangi.

“ARGH- KYO-Kyoshi.. how long have you been standing there?!” Rangi tried to keep her voice down.

Kyoshi looked embarrassed

“Ah sorry Rangi I just wanted to visit you since you were just standing here-“

“Just standing here, are you kidding?”

Uh oh.

Rangi felt her honor getting attacked.

“I'm on duty Kyoshi, im not just sitting back, im working for the Avatar, and it's a huge honor!” Rangi scoffed, still trying to keep her voice down.

“I'm sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. I said your name multiple times but you didn’t answer. So, I thought you weren’t on guard since whenever you are, you're usually extra alert.”

Kyoshi muttered, clearly regretting coming up to her.

“You were calling for me-? Ugh, Kyoshi please, you're distracting me I need to focus.”

“I already told you I'm busy! Why are you so obsessed with me?!“

Ah, Rangi immediately regretted saying that.

Kyoshi dropped her eyes to the ground.

Obsessed? Kyoshi thought

Then cutting off Rangi, Kyoshi whispered.

“I’ll just go, I'm sorry for disturbing you.”

Before Rangi could say anything Kyoshi was already leaving.

“Ah, why did I say that? Why did I say that?!”

Rangi kicked a pebble while watching Kyoshi leave.

“Kyoshi wait- I didn’t mean that-“

What was she even saying? Didn’t she want Kyoshi to get out of the way?

Kyoshi turned around. Now facing Rangi.

It was too late to take back her words now, Rangi already got her attention, and Rangi always wanted to seem like she meant every word she said.

Rangi scoffed to herself in disbelief at how much she was fighting with herself.

“What I was trying to say-“

“It's fine you told me you were busy in the first place, I should be the one apologizing,” Kyoshi added sheepishly

“Are we still meeting up tomorrow?” Kyoshi’s eyes flickered with hope, while looking away.

“Yes, I'll see you tomorrow.”
Rangi couldn’t help but smile to herself.

Her heart spoke before her mind could catch up.

Once she noticed herself smiling she looked away.

“Gosh! What is up with me?!” Rangi wasn’t familiar with herself acting this way. Acting like having a crush.

She never acted on feelings of love so this, this was uncomfortable.

But, just because something is uncomfortable doesn’t mean it’s necessarily bad, yet Rangi didn’t get that. Even after Hei-Ran gave her daughter advice.

Kyoshi already saw the smile though. She thought it was cute.

“Okay now go! Before my mother comes out here asking why there is so much talking outside!”

Rangi needed her out as soon as possible, her heart was fluttering so much. She could feel her face heating up.

“Okay okay. I’ll see you then.”
Kyoshi gave a small nod while saying that and finally left.

Leaving the fire bender by herself again, but this time with warmth in her heart.
