a study in consuetude (and lingering attraction)

Summary:

(So hi I wrote a Dahlia x Barbara / Dahlbara fic cause I can't get enough of them. Please enjoy! )

When it comes to their shared rank as Deacon and Deaconess, Dahlia and Barbara have an unspoken vow to always assist eachother should they need it.

Well, at least thats how it started.

Now more often they run to the other whenever they need someone to lean on, talk to, or simply spend their time with.

So, its no surprise when one of them starts to question, are these little meet ups truly platonic? Or are they really just dates hidden behind convient excuses.

Chapter Text

Barbara, knew this wouldn't be easy.

Finding enough replacements to fill in for this weeks choir absentee's on such short notice... would be quite the challenge.

The Deaconess rubbed her eyes, tired, surrounded by towering stacks of hymnal sheets.

She had already convinced many of passersby to participate, and of course, faced her share of rejections with it. but she was still driven nonetheless.

"I still need to find three more volunteers for the evening choir practice," she murmured.

A sudden splash of cool water made her jump. Right before her stood Dahlia, Deacon of the Church and Herald of their lord, casually twirling his sword. A little habit of his, when he had nothing better to do.

With a cheeky smirk, he pressed a chilled, minty Sweet Flowers drink into her hands to help her refresh.

"Stop worrying so much, Deaconess," Dahlia teased, leaning against an empty choir pew.

"Our Archon appreciates a carefree heart far more than perfect attendance. Besides, I took care of your scouting duties for the day."

Barbara eyed him with an expression of surprise, before the Deacon's offer pivoted her attention.

"Now, how about we grab a drink at the tavern to celebrate?" he nudged her shoulder gently.

Dahlia’s been trying for months to convince her to accompany him there for sharing some drinks and hearsay.

Her colleague sure always had a way of getting things done, well... when he wanted to. Especially whenever there was an agenda of his involved in the outcome of the matter. Still, even if only for today, she was ever grateful for it.

Barbara let out a soft, exasperated sigh, but a smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

She could never stay annoyed with him for long.
