Moe tossed and turned in her bed as she looked to her side, her room was pitch black, utter silence was the only thing in her room. The silence felt too loud, too heavy. Moe sat up and scooted back slightly and brought her knees up to her chin as she buried her face into her knees. She couldn’t sleep, her head was filled with too many scary things. Too many memories. Too many memories she wanted to forget about. Moe brought her legs back down, allowing her blankets to pool at her waist. She rubbed her forehead and laid back down, she closed her eyes once more. This felt too familiar, the fact she couldn’t sleep for the fifth time this month.
Why must she remember this? The fact that she left her friend for dead, in a burning, hot, house. She curled up into a ball, shaking her head and bit her lip. Goddamn it! She couldn’t handle it! She got up, swung the blankets off of her and quietly padded down the hall, she stopped at Ze’s bedroom door. She was hesitant. She didn’t know, would she be a burden? How would he react? She had this hole in her stomach. She didn’t understand why, she was just asking for help. She gripped her clown horn tightly. She took a deep breath and gently knocked on the door and turned the doorknob, she stepped into the bedroom. Ze had woken up and rubbed his eyes as he was sitting up. Once he was fully sat up he brought his free hand to turn on his lamp.
“Moe?” he muttered, his voice was sleepy, and lazy. Pretty obvious due to the fact he was woken up by her, “What do you need?” he asked, Moe fidgeted with her clown horn and bit her lip. Looking anywhere but him. ”honk honk.” (‘I can’t sleep.’) she said using her clown horn, her feet shifted against the carpet, uncomfortably. “Why can’t you sleep?” he said and tilted his head, he didn’t want to pry. But unfortunately, he felt like he had too. Moe got nervous at this question and stepped back slightly, ”honk” (‘nightmare.’) she replied. Ze’s gaze softened, “I don’t want to pry but, what was it about?” he leaned forward, he seemed like he wanted to understand what had frightened her so bad that she ran off to him for comfort. She blinked slowly and finally met his gaze; she looked so frightened. ”Honk honk honkk.” (‘past memories that i wanted to forget.) she replied, she let her arm hang low after replying to him using her clown horn.
He frowned, “You wanna talk about it?” he asked. He was trying to be nice, but he was probably assuming he was being too nosy. It isn’t his business anyways. She quickly shook her head, way too fast. The pure fear in her eyes said volumes. She didn't want to talk about it at all. She walked to sit on the edge of his bed. She rubbed her arm as she adjusted her clown nose, her
gaze drifted from him and when their eyes met she quickly turned her head and looked away. Ze sighed and moved to sit next to her, “I'm-” he started and bit his lip and rubbed his neck, he felt too guilty for making her upset, “I’m sorry for prying, Moe.” he said and placed his hand down on her shoulder. She still refused to even spare him a glance, he sighed, “Moe, c’mon. Look at me.” he said as he attempted to gain her attention, but she turned her back to him. Her posture was somewhat hunched, he sighed and just sat next to her. Just–being there. His hands were in his lap, twiddling his fingers. She slowly looked back at him and turned back to her side so he could see the side of her face. She still didn’t want to look at him. He gently grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him.
“Moe,” he started, “you know you don't have to hide stuff from me–or regect for that matter.” he said and brought his free hand and gently patted her shoulder. “You can always talk to us about nightmares that you’ve had.” He smiled, Moe nodded in return. He let go of her chin and she rested her head against his collarbone and nuzzled deeper, a small warm feeling bloomed in Ze’s chest. He carded his fingers through her hair, they stayed silent. It wasn’t uncomfortable silence. Quite the opposite, the warm lamp that sat on her bedside table would gently flicker. Somewhat mimicking a candle, Moe would glance at it as her eyelids started to shut slightly, she nuzzled her face into his collarbone once more trying to ignore the feeling of falling asleep, everything felt so warm. The feeling of Ze’s fingers against her red, curly hair felt so nice. She let out a yawn but tried to play it off as a normal cough, she wanted to stay like this for as long as possible. He knew she was exhausted, it wasn’t too hidden. “Tired?” he asked, already knowing the answer. She gulped and shook her head, ”Honk!” (‘nope.’) she replied, her head snapped up, her hands rested on his shoulders. A face had faint red blush dusted on her cheeks. Her gaze drifted to the floor and sighed as she leaned forward to nuzzle her face against his neck as she nodded, ”Honk Honk..” (‘Okay, I am.’) she sighed and yawned against his neck. “You wanna sleep here?” he asked, resting his cheek against the side of her head, she nodded. She was somewhat flushed from this request but like hell she would turn it down.
She pushed off of him and face planted into a pillow, she took a deep breath. The pillow smelled just like him. She pushed her face deeper into the pillow, Ze’s gaze followed Moe and her every movement of her. She waited for him to lay down next to her as he watched her lay down and proceed to reach for the lamp. Once he turned it off he got comfortable and pulled the blanket over both of them. He turned his body to face her, Moe was already half-asleep. After all of the exhaustion from today she felt like sleeping, he brought up his hand and gently brushed a curly strand from her forehead as he leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her temple, she smiled against the kiss and wrapped her arms against him and laid her head against his shoulder as she took a deep breath and found herself drifting off to sleep. Once her breathing slowed, Ze laughed quietly and softly and pressed his lips to her head and rested his head on top of hers, “Goodnight, Moe.” He muttered.
